Is it Hot in Here?

So the brand new building at O'Hare doesn't have heat, has sporadic electrical problems and the toilets backed up the first week, lending the scent of raw sewage to the new paint smell. Contrast that to 111th Street, where they can't seem to turn the heat off:

Have they been taking detectives out with heat stroke?

And is Roderick available to fix the pipes?

The lowest minority bidder. I don't have too much of an issue with a few contracts set aside for minorities, but they should be qualified and do decent work, for some reason in this city that can't happen. All the mopney the city spends on these buildings and the contractors screw the pooch regularly and the city keeps using them.

Maybe those dets. were just trying to heat up a suspect into confessing. Don’t forget to aim some bright lights on the suspect too, those tricks always worked in those 1940’s film noir.

I remember walking into Cabrini-Green apartments in the middle of January and leaving in a sweat, it was so hot in there. Not to mention the ComEd bill for a random apartment that the Tact office had tacked onto a bulletin board for several thousand bucks. Even back then, no need for the Foxx family to even attempt to pay a heating bill. Or any other, for that matter. Fun times.

SCC, you make me laugh. I’m not a cop, but I follow the blog. The comment about Roddick is hysterical!
These photos can be used in a court of law to build a case against the city creating unhealthy conditions for cops to be positioned in the best possible light to succeed. Again, where is the FOP?

Before someone says call fop, remember fop can only get involved if someone files a grievance.
Just like you need signed complaints before an arrest.

So, someone document this stuff, grow a pair and sign the paper.

Or, bitch on the blog and in the tavern and nothing will change.

Me, I control the temperature in my car and only in the station for roll call.

I remember, on several occasions, at Area North it would be 88 degrees inside because the a/c wasn't working. We would have to call ambulances for offenders we had in a room because they were falling out from the heat! Meanwhile, all the detectives, p.o's and states attorneys that were working on cases had to sit and stew in their own sweat while dude is getting hauled off to a nice air conditioned hospital because he was feeling too hot! I blame the absolutely useless building engineers for not giving a rats ass about the conditions.

These incidents happen because the City does not pay attention to the day-to-day details of the construction process. The responsibility for quality control is diluted by, first off, handing new construction projects (except at O'Hare & Midway) off to the Public Building Commission. The PBC in-turn subcontracts project management to connected contractors like Milhouse, Wise, etc. The actual on-site inspection & oversight is generally handled by that staff who, in my experience, lack the knowledge and/or skills to recognize substandard work, or lack the balls to confront the general contractor who's performing the work. Given this lack of oversight, the GC has no real motivation to hold his sub's accountable. Unless the User Department, e.g., CPD, has their own on-site rep minding the store on a daily basis - preferably with their own office on-site - you will receive a shit product. I spent my time as a tax-eater performing that very function and I pissed off a lot of so-called owner's reps as well as GCs in order to get the finished product correct and functioning properly. One GC was so pissed that he filed a complaint with the City and I ended up meeting with various City reps & the GC. I provided the evidence of the GC's shoddy workmanship and Procurement & PBC backed me up. The GC corrected the problems and the PBC's so-called owner's rep was royally embarrased, then pushed aside. Fun times. I loved fucking with those trying to get over on the City & taxpayers.

RIP, Mr. Stack
