Somewhere, Gus Tero Weeps

What pansy cried about this?
  • The other Johnson in charge of the academy, has ordered that at no time will recruits be placed in front, lean and rest. It’s too hard on them. Also, there’s no incentive at all to keep the new recruits fit. They can stay as fat as when they start and blow the fuck up to the fatasses that are currently floating around the districts! It’s always been like that, but holy fuck! There’s more of them and they look like stuffed sausages much sooner!
Rumor is this is somehow connected to saving the pensions. Recruits start fatter, gain weight quicker, die before age fifty, and :::voila::: Pension savings!

It's called attrition. They don't fire you, you resign.
Can't do the physicial requirements? Go on disability.
Burned out? Just find another job.
Turnover is a lot of paperwork, but it's still cheaper
than maintaining a stable force.

You need upper body strength (and lower) when the shit hits the fan and you are fighting for your life. You also need a lot of strength to overcome a resistor (sometimes more). PT, strength training, hand to hand combat, all that stuff is not stressed enough. I always thought we should have a week long refresher course once a year in that stuff. Now it’s tranny training and global warming.

Back when I was in the Academy in 2013. They barely worked out the Recruits anyway. We were told that the gym staff got yelled at because recruits were complaining of injuries and a condition called “rhabdo.” Because of that, the hardcore PT workouts disappeared and when we actually did work out for class, it was an awkward mix of conditioning and CrossFit. They gym staff were calling it “tactical conditioning.” In the 6 months of that academy, the hardest workout we had was when Snelling showed up and beat the bejebus out of your class for an hour and it was a GOOD workout. Now he isn’t even there. During the academy, my run times actually increased because we worked out so little. I was going home and beating myself up at the gym. All the academy cares about now is just getting people out the door. That’s it. Who cares if you can’t pass the tests, aren’t fit, can’t shoot, look like a train wreck, have racial or other bias motives to police, etc. Just “get them out the door.” It’s embarrassing.

All joking aside, there just might be something to that last paragraph. Looking at the deceased members page in the fop magazine lately, most of these coppers are dying in their eighties and nineties as opposed to sixties, seventies, and eighties as was the case just 30-40 years ago. Yes, health care is vastly improved, but with a lot of coppers retiring in their 50s and the dearth of hiring these days, it does not bode well for the pension fund. What is it funded at these days? Remember when it was 80 per cent? A booming economy and stock market can only do so much for so long. Something has to give. Hopefully, not us.

Why would you want a fit police department? Policing is dead. They don’t want you chasing anyone by foot & if you can’t defend yourself physically, it’s better that you are a statistic, a dead one rather than the city fight any bullshit lawsuit for you doing your job. I walked into the medical last week after a cold & a bunch of officers were milling at the desk. I’m not that fit anymore, but everyone in there looked like a meatball with legs.

Retired 62 years old still in good condition continue to work out, naturally the workout is changed not able to bench press 400 pounds anymore, now doing functional fitness TRX look it up it works. Remember the number one thing to do is to keep yourself in shape for your family your career and a prolong your life and God willing, get your share of the pension!

Another Johnson holding his Johnson. Beck and Malinowski are suppose to make reforms in the Dept. Lets face it boys if you want to make a meaningful change for the future, you have to look at entry level training and the lasting impact it has on street level officers. Basic police training sets the tone and tenor for at least those first few years. There is much to say about the quality of the hiring process, lowering of entry level standards but that would take much too long for this post. The same for In Service training.

The Training Division needs to be overhauled with capable administrators who know and understand their mission to produce a well trained police force. If your training is meaningful and focused on a high degree of mental and physical skills you will have a higher attrition rate. Is the Academy's current graduation rate similar to the Chicago Public School's graduation rate. Nobody fails, all graduate and everyone get's a "trophy for breathing". It's funny how many of these "breathers" need pre-college remedial training in reading, writing and speaking the "Queen's English. Same for the Academy only here when you graduate you are armed and dangerous to yourself and others. There are exceptions to every rule.

With experienced, mature men and women, e.g., Military, Vets, and responsible others, meeting a higher entry level standard, high quality personnel ensures long term future success. Sadly, because of poor management due to clout, merit and other corruptive practices long held by previous Superintendents and key incompetent HQ's staff, training has been marginal at best.

So Beck what's it gonna be, mediocrity or Training Division revamp?

You are totally right, look at every district at the PO’s that have 3-5 years and the majority have out on some major weight. I have 12 years and work in 012 on midnights (by choice) and there are at least half-dozen Officers with less than 4 years that have gained at least 20-30 pounds. That’s insane! Heck, there is even a female (C.T.) they not only be ballooned but has been on bullshit IOD no less than (4) times and she has less than 3 years. Even third watch has a few that are in the same category, and that’s not only embarrassing but it’s dangerous. These officers will be useless if you ever need help, as I’m sure they will look like the Michelin man in less than 10 years. The academy is was too soft on these recruits and are doing everyone an injustice and putting them in danger.

save CPD , dump every exempt member that has had 1 or more Merit promotions , let's get some qualified Police Officers from Patrolman ,Detective ,Sergeant ,Lieutenant Ranks and promote them to exempt .
Pay them exempt salary , have them sign off that pension will be based on current rank , believe me , you will get dedicated , qualified Police Officers from all ranks applying for the exempt positions and they will be respected by the rank and file .
Try it , it'll save pension and it will allow qualified Officers to apply and serve Chicago's Finest

22 years ago it was to easy I thought. Just prior I had one to a different Academy which had a wellness program for exercise. Work out if you want to. I left that department and joined the Chicago police department. Already 15 lbs heavier from all the sitting and late night burritos after the bars in Champaign-Urbana, I was ready to drop the pounds. There was a huge build up to the welcome to the gym day. That was a pretty good workout. But after that it all pretty much stopped. During one of the questionnaires a couple recruits complained about the workouts and they decided to run as hard one day. Again that was it. For some reason they turn to step aerobics and rubber band training. Before I entered the Academy, my World War II veteran neighbor told me to get ready for the workout of my life. The Academy had a reputation . I never witnessed any consistent decent workouts. Everyone gained a little weight back then I can’t even imagine what it’s like now. The only Academy with a real workout program is the state police academy. But the reality of the whole thing is it’s on the person to keep thim/herself fit for duty. It’s your ass, and nobody else should be carirying you.

Listen, if you were lazy and barely worked out prior to becoming the police, what will front lean and rest going to do for you? FL&R is all about discipline and control. Breaking the individual's mindset to conform to rules. Once you move on from the academy, it means absolutely nothing in the real world, as any copper from Chicago knows.

Your body changes through the ages. Also, occasionally get a trainer. It costs money but it is worth it. Fitness is not either / or. It's a kinds of things, flexibility, endurance, power, strength etc. That said, I think we did some exercise wrong then, but, when you need it when you are running or fighting, you really need it. I also recommend books by Mark Verstagen. The exercises could save your shoulders, knees, etc.

Gus was our PT instructor in 1993. He pushed us and we were better for it. There will always be someone stronger, faster or a better fighter. Your life and/or your partner's life depends on every POs ability to secure their weapon and bring an offender under control. You may need to just stay in the fight until help arrives. One PO called for help while he was fighting for his life in someone's backyard. He chased the offender for a long enough distance that he lost track of where he was. He was breathing hard into the radio screaming for help but he didn't know where he was. Fortunately, he had done enough cardio to stay alive until the cavalry arrived. At 54, I am still doing my push ups, sit ups and 30 min run. I am not Gus quality but I can stay in the fight until the cavalry arrives.

Fat and lousy-looking officers are everywhere regardless of years on the job!

Some are just damn fat for being lazy, having no self-control and respect for themselves.

Some are lousy-looking because they are slobs to begin with! Worn-out uniforms, unpressed uniforms, dirty uniforms, poor hygiene, no uniform standards.

Some are just plain combination of both above-mentioned.

It falls on the individual to maintain discipline throughout his / her service. No Gus, Larry or military boot camp can permanently change one's attitude towards getting in shape.

I knew Gus Tero, the current mentality of so many police officers would have made him cry.

It has little to do with physical conditioning but All to do with cohesion.
Physical pain joins strangers together.
Helping, holding and pushing each other.
Builds a bond.
Turns white, black, yellow and brown individuals into a blue team.
Not rocket science.

It doesn't matter what they do to you in the academy. Few years later most are out of shape, mentally screwed and eat crap while sitting in a car or desk for 90% of the tour. Cant blame the city or the department. They put pretty decent gyms in every distric.

We are a para military organization and the academy is in violation of State laws that require you to be fit via power testing. What the hell does Johnson know that qualifies him to run the academy. The last qualified person was Gary Schenkl who was a MARINE. Chicago training academy is a disgrace and should be looked at by the Police training board. My son went to Cook County school run by the Sheriff's at Triton college and it made them work. I would out them up against CPD ACADEMY ANYTI

Along with Tero, Marsh, Frost and a couple others, we had a gym intructor named Resendez. (sp)
His deal was the "Airbone Shuffle" style of running.
One day, he ran us from the academy to the loop. Then, dropped us, in the middle of the sidewalk, in front of everybody, for pushups.
For a minute it seemed kind of embarrassing. But then, we noticed how passersby seemed respected that we were training to be police officers. Some yelled words of encouragement. When we finished, people actually applauded and thanked us.
Let that sink in...Civilians thanking the instructor and recruits.
I'm 3 years retired. Have a godson on the job in 015.
He's taken aback at how the police are viewed as the enemy, the moment they arrive on the scene.
I tell him how in my opinion, the early 90's were the last time the "majority" of the public was on the police's side. He can't believe such a time ever existed.
I feel bad for the young po's out there today. I really do.

RIP Master Gus! Hapkido class started with Master Gus arriving to the Dojang without his uniform and asking me if he could join in. I was teaching until our Grandmaster arrived and briefly stepped off the mat and witnessed some arrogant smart assholes newbies not knowing of Master Gustavo. Gus joined in to bow and was told by a TKD white belt that he needed to step off the mat or get to the back of the class. It gets better. Gus calmly went to the back. Went through the class like he was up to something. I looked at him while he kept waving his hand at me to be quiet and not expose him. Well, the next day guess who shows up in uniform with his belt with Dan ranking damn near covering the belt? The class full of newbies damn near pissed on themselves. Master Gus told them he was a clone followed by hours of placing wristlocks on the students. Master Gus didn't break a sweat and cranked techniques on females no differently than he did on a few meatheads. One actually passed out when Master Gus introduced him to pressure point technique! RIP Master Gustavo

We had Wenger,Marsh, and Frost when I was in the academy. Tero and Morawski came in near the end. One classmate asked Wenger, "I know we have physical standards here, but what about when we get out and on the street?" Wenger, without missing a beat said," When you get too fat to fit in a beat car, they put you on a wagon." LOL

Why bother with all the "militaristic" supertrooper training conditioning etc.? You workout, get on top of your game, then get out on the streets, get into it with some shithead and end up getting sued because you're "too aggressive" or heavy handed, strong, etc. Better nowadays to talk your way outta trouble than using fists and batons. You'll have a longer career. Like they told us 20 years ago, if you use any outside training (martial arts, etc) and you injure/kill someone, the city will wash their hands of you saying " we didn't train him that way" With the ease of lawsuits nowadays, not taking a chance. Actually better letting the bad guy injure you enough to leave this job on permanent disability. Better than being on the wrong end of the lawsuit. Problem is, how far can an iod go before it = death. Too much of a ga

The idea of turning a police academy, any police academy, into boot camp is just a waste of time. I was at the LAPD academy some years back and they had a hill that everyone had to run up. All PT was done in sweats wearing belt with gear. Lots of running and cadence calling. I can see some PT every morning to wake everyone up, but the idea of a police " boot camp[" if overblown and unnecessary and serves no reasonable purpose. So. , why put people into a front leaning rest position? Nothing but harassment..

1/27/2020 08:33:00 AM

How about the fact many of these recruits have been civilians their entire lives, many of whom have never been in a fight. When the time comes, you need to operate effectively under stress. You need to fight like your life depends on it, because one day it might. As Tim Kennedy would say...fight like you’re the third monkey trying to get on the ark, and it’s starting to rain!!!

One reason I always believe in PT training to start the day at academy is that it starts a good routine for recruits. They get into habit of working out first thing in the morning and hopefully they will stick with it after academy. Especially with workouts like CrossFit etc, there should be no reason you can't get in a solid workout in under an hour each morning.

Gus was one of a kind. A trainee in the 80s experienced hardship by way of his mother passing during his first week and was left as the sole breadwinner for his siblings. Gus was with legendary status around Stateway Gardens. Tero was a name of the one family that was respected. Gus took a concern and interest toward the trainee because the trainee was from A Stateway Gardens. The trainee had recently graduated from a college in Mississippi where he played football. Gus found out his fate through word of mouth and obtained a home for the trainee and his siblings directly in his neighborhood and told him he would not allow for him to not complete the academy in flying colors. The only condition was that he would need to train with Gus before and after academy training! Guess what? The trainee was damn near the top of his class. Gus smoked his ass daily too! The trainee stayed on for six years and was able to eventually get on with a federal agency. Good guy too. As for Gus what can you say? They don't make them like that anymore.
