Rescue a What?

Everywhere in Illinois, these are classified as pests. We understand you don't even need a hunting permit to kill them and there's no bag limit. They routinely slaughter pets and as far as we know, the only good they do is keep the skunk population manageable. So why risk a first responder for this?
  • Emergency crews rescued a coyote from Monroe Harbor in downtown Chicago midday Tuesday, authorities said. Marine unit officers responded to a marine distress call regarding an animal in the water in the 100 block of North Lake Shore Drive, according to police spokeswoman [...]. Two animal control units also responded.

Fire Department crews were dispatched to the area about 11:20 a.m. to help with an animal in the water, said Fire Department spokesman [...]. Fire crews rescued the animal, said fire spokesman [...]. The animal could be seen on a stretcher, wrapped in a blanket, next to Monroe Harbor on Tuesday.

Chicago Animal Care and Control took possession of the coyote....
They got two Animal Care and Control units? A few weeks ago, there were two pit bulls chasing children and ACC told dispatch there were "no units available" which left the District with one option - kill the dogs. The entire watch was looking for thirty days desk vacation within moments, but both dogs disappeared.

It's just as well - ACC kills a majority of the animals it takes in and pretty much 100% of the wild ones.

Most of the time we respond to a person down or a medical run, dispatch says fire isn't rolling at this time but yet they send out trucks for an animal..I guess we see now who takes precedence. Your even lucky if ACC answers the phone let alone them coming out!!!

ACC is a fucking joke in Chicago. If you’re a private citizen, and you have a rodent problem, just poison everything. It will be better than calling ACC and waiting weeks for a response. In the 70's my buddy drove an ambo for fire. They went on a call and arrived to see a 9 year old child devoured from her rib cage to her pelvis. Needless to say it disturbed him. Later, as a sort of therapy, they would turn off their lights at night, jump the curb on North Ave. and drive through the bushes in Humbolt park shooting the dogs they scared out of their dens. Those were the good old days. They got fired, but not for that. They were the fifth ambo to arrive at old Mayor Daley's doctors office. Somebody gotta fall for that one.

CFD responds to animals in the water because if they don't and a citizen goes in to rescue, the shit hits the fan for all of us.
ACC live release rate (adoptions, returns, rescue pulls etc) was 92% for 2019. Even allowing for some massaging of the figures by the City that's not too shabby.
And surprise surprise, most of the stray dogs and cats destroyed at ACC come in from two sections of the city because the humans there don't give a damn about them.
I love this blog because it tells me what's really going on around here in these times of fake news. Keep up the good work and to the boys and girls in blue, God bless you.

14,828 dogs and cats came into CACC in 2019 (an open door shelter meaning they don’t turn strays and owner surrenders away). A thousand more than 2018. Less than 9% were humanely euthanized. Give a little credit, where due, to the employees and volunteers that work tirelessly to make that happen. The city is too busy lining their pockets to hire sufficient paid staff. It’s no different than those who blame the police for the murder rate in Chicago.

The Fire Department performs water rescues on animals as a preventative measure. Without the response, a citizen will attempt the rescue and wind up a victim themselves. Removing the animal from the water protects a civilian life or two. This is the reason for the Department's policy.

c)Coyote and Striped Skunk 1)Hunting dates: Year around except as noted in Section 550.10(a). 2)Hunting hours: One-half hour before sunrise to ½ hour after sunset, except from the opening date of the red fox and gray fox hunting season through March 15, when statewide huntinghours are unrestricted, and except during archery deer season when coyote and striped skunk bow hunting hours shall coincide with the statewide archery deer hunting hours, as specified in Section 2.26 of the Wildlife Code. Hunting before ½ hour prior to sunrise or after ½ hour after sunset is a Class A misdemeanor with a minimum $500 fine and a maximum $5,000 fine, in addition to other statutory penalties, except when hours are unrestricted (see 520 ILCS 5/2.33(y)).3)Daily limit and possession limit: None.

The "exception"
Section 550.10 General Regulationsa)It is unlawful to hunt raccoon, opossum, striped skunk, red fox, gray fox, coyote, bobcat and woodchuck (groundhog) in counties open for deer hunting during the firearm deer hunting season as specified in 17 Ill. Adm. Code 650.10, except coyotes may be taken by persons in possession of a valid unfilled firearms deer permit during hours and seasons specified in 17 Ill. Adm. These are the three animals to hunt year-round (or nearly year-round).

1. Coyote
Open to hunt all year long in Illinois, coyote can be hunted on public or private lands. According to Prairie State Outdoors, between November 10 and March 15 they can be hunted 24 hours a day, the rest of the year hunting time is restricted to 30 minutes before sunrise to 30 minutes after sunset.

Of course, a hunting license and species permit are still required and hunting is closed during the weekends of firearm deer season except for those with unfilled firearm permits. Nearly any weapon including bows, rifles, shotguns, and even handguns can be used depending on whether the hunter is on public or private property and dogs can be used on private property. There’s no limit to the number of coyotes a hunter can bag.

Fantastic. It is used as a varmint cartridge. Nothing in there says it was developed for killing coyotes. And you won't find anything saying it was developed for killing coyotes, because it wasn't. It was developed for military use, and was then used by the military. If you actually believe Remington devoted time and money to developing a specialized ammo just for killing coyotes, you are even more clueless than I originally thought. Just because ammo has been used for a certain purpose, doesn't mean it was designed solely for that purpose, or if that purpose was even remotely considered during the development of that ammo. Now run to wikipedia to try again.
