Not "Safer in Jail"
- A 19-year-old man being held at Cook County Jail on an attempted murder charge was found dead in his cell early Saturday with apparent head trauma, according to the Cook County sheriff’s office.
At 1:53 a.m., correctional officers found Pedro Ruiz unresponsive in his cell and immediately “began lifesaving measures,” according to a statement from the sheriff’s office. He was taken to Mount Sinai Hospital and pronounced dead.
Ruiz’s cellmate was put in handcuffs, the sheriff’s office said, which they said was standard procedure during a investigation.
Yeah, that would be called "cuffing the suspect" at the very least.
Someone has commented that there have been something like thirty deaths in three years at the jail, which would lead us to believe there's a serial killer or killers stalking the corridors. So emptying the jail makes sense - less available victims, right?
Or perhaps chronic under-staffing along with incompetency in management.

They say jails are the biggest mental institutions in
the County. Most inmates have serious psych problems
and wind up in the hooch by default.
Maybe he slipped on a bar of soap - or a piece of pizza.

When I heard this on the news, I immediately thought: "Whomever he tried to kill, had family or friends who came back and handled the situation in Jail...so he couldn't get out and kill them."

First murder in a long time. All the deaths have to do mostly with overdose. A few successful suicides, a couple natural causes, but mostly overdoses. These inmates can get whatever they want inside that jail. No more strip searches, not enough staff to conduct searches regularly equals a bad mix. Jail is definitely not jail anymore, even if these guys don’t get a I-bond. Pizza parties, chair yoga, everyone has a “mental illness” and needs a program to be in.

I worked in the jail a few tears back and have never been able to understand all the "religious" services/meetings the jail is allowed to have. The jail like a public school is a tax payer funded institution, I never went to public school but do they teach religious studies in public schools? I thought there was a separation of church and state if you are not allowed to teach about God in a public school then why should you be allowed to teach about God (in any form) in a public jail if you will. These "religious services " in the jail are nothing more then opportunities to pass drugs, weapons, kites (messages) to other gang members. I remember dude going to Christian, Jewish and Muslim services all in the same week, must of been a theologian. Perhaps if you taught them about God when they were in school they would not necessarily be in their currant situation.
Backin the 70's Area 4 homicide detectives were sent into CCJ to investigate murders. The county staff and sheriff's investigators could not be trusted to do an honest investigation. My heart went out to the people working in that shithole. I found the sheriff's investigators to be pretty decent people, some corrupt politically, but over all trying to do a good job under terrible circumstances.

So this guy, a Latin Saint was put into a two person cell with an SD who has been known by the detectives to have shot several saints but couldn’t get charged. If they would have separated rival gang Members then this would’ve never happened

When Sheriff Arpaio had 5 deaths in a year the feds were called in. Dart has 5 times that amount while the media gives him humanitarian awards. The Teamsters have supposedly told the officers off the record to stand down and basically let the inmates kill each other. Sheriff Dart won't back the officers who do their jobs so do you blame them. The jail had about 12,000 inmates in 2002, down to under 4,000 now. There is basically the same amount of guards as in 02 while now its free for all. Messed up the Sheriff is offering comp time to officers who refer qualified recruits cause few want the job. They use to have thousands of applicants with college degrees lining up. Dart changed that too.

Take at a look at the suit filed by CPS who taught in jail. The Sheriff beloved inmates were wacking off in front of the teachers and many were drinking jail house made alcohol in class while the guards just watched. Nice jail Dart!!

Tom Dart berates and belittles top-staff and thinks he is smarter than everyone else/look at the results. You don't need to beat the inmates, there is plenty of other remedies to deter this violence. There is plenty of high ranking members who recently resigned to let Tom fall on his own sword.

Friend from a jail law enforcement position said they are told not to ask gang affiliation during intake and can not log it even if the offender volunteers it. Dart and Fox new plan. I guess they didn’t realize it was a bad plan. Maybe they should start listening to the employees working in the field/jail.
