- Mayor Lori Lightfoot on Friday called a three-year surge in CTA crime “totally, fundamentally unacceptable” and vowed to get a handle on it with increased patrols and even more surveillance cameras.
In the one-month period between Thanksgiving and Christmas alone, CTA buses and trains were the scene of 458 criminal incidents, according to Chicago Police. That’s a 24 percent spike from same period in 2017.
“I was alarmed when I saw what the numbers looked like going back to 2017, and we’re gonna fundamentally turn that around. The public transportation system has to be safe,” she said.
Well, when you put clouted idiots in charge of the Transit Detail, then ignore all the signs of impending disaster, multiple PAR forms to leave, allow qualified manpower to dwindle, and completely miss years and years of warnings here, well.....you can't say you weren't warned

The CTA cars at least at the 95th redline are the biggest wastes ever. What’s the point of having them if they don’t answer calls at that station which 005 has to handle. I get 005 cars get assigned to calls because its in district but even if its a hot call like a robbery in progress/person with a gun the mass transit guys are no where to be found to even assist other po’s

Mass transit has been in need of serious overhaul for several years. The crime statistics are very telling as to what isn't being done in the tubes.
I keep hearing the word "change" lately when it comes to the police department. The change is moving chess pieces around on the chessboard and making up fancy titles for people who are still doing nothing. "We serve and protect" is emblazoned on every marked squad car but I really question who is being protected, the actual victim of the crime or the offender. Do any of these consent decree monitors realize that their is something called a "victim" when a crime is committed. That should be the change, worry more about the rights of the victim, not the offender.
Why is it so difficult to understand: if you want something to succeed bring in someone who has a proven track record of capabilities. If you want it to fail, like Mass Transit has done, year after year, you bring in stupid, do-nothing, entitled clout babies. You need a transit style like New York. They have two or three cops at beach subway stop and platform. Two-4 plainclothes undercover cops on every train run. They ride the same run their entire tour in an undercover capacity. Waiting for the robberies or phone thefts. They move from car to car looking for that “group” to get on the train that they suspect is up to no good. Then they stay on the same car with them and wait for it to happen and boom. In custody. I’ve never heard a mass transit car come up for a red line job ever. The dispatcher will broadcast it and say, no mass transit unit available.
Get rid of the infringement barring citizens from carry guns on mass transit, crime WILL PLUMMET!!

MT is a small enough unit to test this out in. Put in some competent people, and their like in management, and empower the police to enforce laws, and city ordinances or things will stay the same or get worse. Criminals should think twice before committing crimes on CTA property, and that's the way it needs to be. NO one thinks twice any more in this city.

There are a handful of officers from mass transit you will see consistently in 001 with arrests. Other than that, they are never at any CTA jobs unless they show up late only to ask for it he RD number and then quickly leave. That Unit needs a good ol’ flushing and restarting. A lot of them ran from Districts to hide from work. They are only doing what many before them have done. This is why retirement at 50 with medical benefits should be an option. Let the old guys go so the new generations can move into Units like this and do the things that might deter the crime. Notice I didn’t say end or eradicate? It’ll still happen but it can be reduced.

I'm no supporter of clout shennanigans, but in this instance, the increased crime statistics on the CTA is an institutional problem, not one of personnel involved. Put another boss in there, same thing will happen. Have more fixed posts, all you'll have are more coppers (and supervisors) getting screwed over on beefs from handling on view ghetto nonsense.
Either let us be the police again, the way the majority of us were taught over 20 years ago, or just forget about it.

Mass Transit needs their Own SDSC room and atleast 5 officers manning cameras per watch. Cpd keeps thinking putting officers on foot patrol or a beat car will help, but then the officers go about their day with blinders on. This is where Platoon policing would be effective.
Bring back the Guardian Angels! They did far more for CTA safety then the absentee transit cops. I haven't seen the private K-9 patrol in a long time either.
I ride CTA trains/buses every day. I have not seen a cop on a CTA train in a very long time. Now, there are piss-bums on the CTA trains even during rush hour, taking up 6 seats and smelling like piss. There is no enforcement of any kind. It's the "broken windows theory" in action. Criminals know they can do anything and nobody will stop them. Chicago will get a "Bernie Goetz" shooting someday, it's only a matter of time and odds.
Every district commander should get his share of CTA officers and sgts and mass transit should be eliminated. The space at 18th street can be used by Citywide Homocide Teams.
It's all smoke and mirrors...filled with clout and do nothings... 1st district has a car posted on the redline EVERY DAY on 3rd and 1st watch...periodically we also assign tact to the redline for several hours during shift. You rarely see any mass transit on the platforms and dispatch sends jobs to the CW and is told no one is available (rush hour in the loop). On the rare occasion mass transit is on scene they generally take no action and let the district handle everything. I'm not crying about it but if you've got a unit specifically for CTA then why are the districts responsible for this??? More questions than answers as usual on this department.

The next Commander will not be able to do much more anyway, due to the fact, that Waller and Carter brought their friends in that unit and they do not do a thing. Have Beck come into the office around ten each morning and witness the amount of people that work inside. (Waller's wife) Two time keepers for about 140 Officer's and a day Sgt who messes up everything she touches, Crazy Kim walks around like she is somebody; but forgot nobody gives a rat ass who her triple merit husband is.
The mass transit unit is filled with people who hide. If you work special you’re expected to do more than the regular people assigned to it. It’s completely dysfunctional.

I was one of the pro-CCWs posting up above. I'm going to (anonymously) say this - Carry where and when you need to in order to defend yourself and survive. As much as Kim Foxx would like to prosecute a fine upstanding CCW for scoffing at the law, if you plead not guilty, you can bet your defense would be covered through the generosity of your pro-gun supporters.
If charged with violating the law, it is easy to challenge the constitutionality of it. Add that to the somewhat well documented (thanks for nothing, media) wilfully neglect to public safety within Cook County and Chicago under our current and former politicians - and how could you not in good conscience take the matter of your safety and protection into your own hands?
I ride CTA multiple times a week to get to my job. I goes years without seeing cops riding the trains. They got rid of those "Security" people with the dogs it seems. What the hell is left? Take Uber everywhere? Or gun-up and hope for the best. Great job again, Chicago.

Mass Transit is very short staffed. There’s hardly 10 -12 people on a regular basic at roll call after RDO’s, furloughs, Time due is taken into consideration. Transit needs an additional 60 -70 heads minimum to make a difference.
Let's put Garcia as Commander of Mass Transit, he remembers how it is to be a blue shirt.
Hopefully things will get better on the CTA. But I'm still going to carry everywhere in Chicago and that includes all the gun free zones, especially the CTA.

The new timekeeper, HS, was snuck in and is a FTO who was never a timekeeper in her whole career. Shouldn't she be training PPOs? Why is she inside learning timekeeping? More bad choices for this unit.

It’s called Special Employment. Twenty years ago we rode 22 buses per tour and I mean ride. The room was full of off duty working their rdo, now we are lucky to have 10-12 on third watch for the whole damn thing, and that’s just for the trains, and sero for the buses.

News flash dipshit. MT just like housing when it was around and generally any units are considered support units. It’s still the districts job to handle those Incidents. I’m pretty certain those guys don’t have vehicles either, so guess how they have to respond to a call.. via the train goofball.
How about giving mass transit cars... Makes it easier to actually make it to a job if your 3 stops away and don't have to wait 15min to get there...
Did CTA once have its' own police? I remember Jane Byrne disbanding it. If I'm wrong, correct me. :-)

I recall during the summer when the department stationed officer up and down the redline from 95t to Chinatown and all they had to do was stand there and wait for a relief for lu ch, half were sitting in the car or taking g 2 hour lunches without a relief. So it sounds like someone trying to milk so extra $$$ to do what they do when working o.t. NOTHING
