Bauer Trial

  • One of the most high-profile police murder trials in recent Chicago history opened Tuesday with lawyers giving jurors two starkly different views of the two figures at the center of the case: slain police Cmdr. Paul Bauer and Shomari Legghette, his alleged killer.

Prosecutors portrayed Bauer as the pride of his department, a devoted officer needlessly gunned down while trying to tackle Legghette, a cowardly criminal who opened fire out of fear cops would discover his bulletproof vest, his cocaine and his 9 mm Glock.

But a defense lawyer painted Bauer’s death as just the opposite: Bauer was the one who was aggressive and out of control, and Legghette was just a low-level “street hustler” who acted in self-defense when a man he did not know was a police officer attacked him out of nowhere.
Because a police commander, in full uniform, with cuffs out and radio blaring isn't readily identifiable as the police. To even present this defense in a courtroom is a slap at all law enforcement.

The trial continues all week. We're told by a few attendees that the judge has barred all weapons from the courtroom, so you have to check it in downstairs with the sheriff's before proceeding upstairs.

Well, the defense is aware that the majority of citizens have a seething blood coming out of their eyes hatred for the police. Their strategy has a more than 50% chance of working, in my opinion.

Defense and the scumbag first tried to have the case dismissed because he didnt get a speedy trial. After a little discussion in chambers it turns out the defense agreed to all continuances and asked for most of them. Then they wanted to change venue. No go on that too. It would have been nice to see this pile of trash get tried in DuPage

I heard this horseshit on the radio when the atty said that Cmdr. Bauer "brought it on himself".

W.T.F.?

I get a "zealous defense" for one's client, but this is beyond the pale. Hope that atty never runs into one of his clients on the street and needs a cop.

Everything can be a weapon. The most dangerous weapon is the human mind.
Most judges, like most people, aren't that smart.
If a man wants to live a long life and prosper he should be honest.
The surest way to a brutal and untimely end is corruption.

I never understood this argument completely. I mean, I understand what they’re getting at, but when you think about it, their argument is “my client didn’t know Mr X was a police officer. You see, my client thought he was murdering a regular citizen” so they’re admitting to the murder, just not the murder of a police officer. In today’s society, you’re probably better off admitting to murdering a cop than some random gang banger.

Defense attorneys sleep well, not due to money as some get rich while most don't, but due to the fact they view their job as a game. They play to win and when they do, it feels good. The 'thrill of a win' and taking a shot at it - while that often times means spewing bullshit- gets them satisfaction.

When they lose? The motive to get up and try again, with more crazy bullshit, is in play so they can get that hit of the 'win' some time down the line.

That is a dopamine hit if they get away with it, telling lies and winning a case that way, so they are incentivized to keep playing the 'game' of getting killers and criminals off the hook in creative ways.

With a Chicago jury hearing the case I will bet that walks away Free with a big check for his troubles. Yea, the bullet proof vest, well he was in downtown Chicago so perfectly natural to want to have some sort of protection. Turns out he needed it since he was attacked by someone with a gun.

Kamin in his presentation acknowledged his clients body armor, but stated his client possessed a firearm he had never shot. He was initially stopped because his client had to pee before meeting a woman for lunch that he was considering for a girlfriend. How in the fucking world can attorneys deliver such bullshit and still keep a straight face. I can't begin to imagine what Leggett is going to testify to once he gets on the stand, which I really doubt he will.

Bauer was a FIXTURE in my old neighborhood. I never saw him as anything but calm cool and collected. He waspolite and respectful. His horse was alwsys well treated. If he was after a criminal, he was doing his job to the best of his ability. Hope the judge is decent. Do honorable judges still exist? This makes me sick.

Prayers to his family, all our blue and the truth.

I had an old friend who was a very good and aggressive ASA who resigned and went to the "dark side" as a defense attorney. About two years later we arrested three mutts for a really brutal murder, and he ends up defending the ringleader, who was a really bad guy with a long sheet. He lost, fortunately, and the mutt went to prison for life.

About a year later I happened to see him at a school event- I walked over to say hello and he said he was surprised I'd talk to him, as most Cops wouldn't. I told him that I was talking to the man he used to be, not the one he had become.

I then asked him how the hell he could defend these pieces of garbage. He said "I've got one of the biggest houses in Orland Park, my wife and I both have a Lexus, my kids are going to the best schools, and we vacation in Hawaii twice a year, that's how."

Pretty sad...

OT, only sort of:

Conway should get the disgusting video of the murderer being applauded by his fellow criminals in the jail, and put that together with Crimeesha's statement that she identifies more with criminals than law-abiding citizens.

Add the published reports of how hard and successfully Bauer was working with the community in 018. Trib had one, as I recall.

Time for Conway to step and ask the decent-but-silent majority in the black community: do they want civilization or prefer what Crimesha offers?

Like that certain type of criminal that subconsciously wants to get caught, so there are lawyers who subconsciously want to lose a case. That the victim was undeniably identifiable as a police officer, coupled with the implicit admission that the defendant was willing (and intended) to kill a person, suggests that this might be that situation.

The lawyer gets paid win or lose. The "game" might be how far the lawyer can push this bullshit defense with a straight face. His future client base is impressed by his outward attitude toward the police. Lawyer wins overall even if he loses this case.

That said, many (if not most) criminal defense attorneys are distinguishable from their clients by little more than pinstriped wool.

^^Defense attorneys are just "part of the game" and I agree 100% with you. Some of them really get off on beating us in court. And some of them are very, very good when they get younger officers on the stand. I have one in my extended family and he is a good guy but a bit of a drunk.

I went to the trial yesterday. I am not with the police department, just a concerned and recently retired civil attorney. I was unable to see the opening live, but did see it on my phone And I saw all of the witness exams in the courtroom. Personally, I could not represent a client I did not believe in, and I have said no to more potential clients than I have agreed to accept as clients. Unfortunately, Public Defenders do not have that luxury. Still, I was quite surprised at the PD’s opening. At points he sounded like the PD in My Cousin Vinny, down to a personal quirk that made it difficult to follow his nonsensical theory of the case. He argued the the Defendant was shot at “in his line of work selling drugs.” It would have been funny, except there is nothing funny about the murder of a good family man who also happened to be a well respected CPD commander. The PD, so far, is not doing an effective job. (It seems as though he did not visit the crime scene as he had difficulty understanding the proximity of the Thompson Center to the Daley Center.) I plan to attend the trial again. I would be shocked if the defendant, who apparently lowered his seat to look smaller, escaped sever punishment. I am struck, once again, that whether it is McDonald, the guy on the Red line at Grand, or most other incidents involving a police shooting, it could all have been avoided if people would obey a command to stop and freeze.

Watching billionaire presidential candidate Bloomberg apologizing for "stop and frisk" in New York City should let us all know where the world is at today. He apologized, because he deployed law enforcement where it was needed most, apologized because violators of criminal statutes happen to live in certain areas of the city and they happen to proportionally be non Caucasion. What else should be apologized. Meanwhile back at the ranch, Dr. Willie Wilson is running ads on the radio asking you contact your Congressman to authorize reparations for descendants of slaves. And this my friends represents the mentality of those trying to run/ruin this country.

I have a couple things to add...

I saw that someone ID'd this POS as a PD. He is not. He is a civil rights Attorney that is in it for the "payout" The "self-defense" and "police brutality" angle has been well planned since the POS killer fired an experienced team of PDs.

It was mentioned that the POS Attorney filed a motion because the State violated the killer's right to a speedy trial. That's interesting, given the fact that the POS Attorney was suspended for 90-days and balked at the last scheduled trial date.

You know you're bad when the other civil rights Attorneys are shaking heir heads.

WOW!!!!!! Someone who actually gets it!!!!!!

Ground zero for police shootings whether justified or ends up in bad judgements or tactics is resisting a lawful arrest. You have the courts to argue your arrest. The media should do something useful and push that message instead of creating conflict to sell commercials. News is no longer “only the facts” it’s entertainment tonight.
