Election Results Thursday

  • The cold war between Mayor Lori Lightfoot and the Fraternal Order of Police is in danger of turning into a deep freeze.

John Cantanzara, one of the CPD’s most frequently disciplined officers, and Martin Preib, who has crusaded against the “wrongful convictions movement,” are expected to be the top two finishers in an election for union president when results are announced Thursday.

Incumbent FOP President Kevin Graham is a long-shot to make the run-off. The question appears to be whether Cantanzara or Preib will claim more than 50% of the votes or whether the two strongest challengers will be forced into a run-off.
The office of President is the only one that needs the "fifty-percent-plus-one" vote. Failing to get to that mark, a runoff will be hoed, usually within a few weeks. Everyone else is a simple majority of the ballots cast.

It certainly promises to be an interesting three years.

The choice seems easy, but we all need to wake up. It isn’t about raises, retro, or residency. It’s about discipline and protecting the rights we have. It’s about protecting your job so that you can someday retire. Raises, retro, and residency don’t mean a damn thing if you are terminated.

Take a good hard look at each of their histories.

Catanzara just doesn’t know when to sit back and listen. He will likely fight with everyone and accomplish nothing.

Graham only sits back and listens and then does nothing. He will continue to fight with nobody and again accomplish nothing.

Preib has been intelligently advocating for our guys for years. He will likely continue to pick his battles and accomplish something.

Unrelated, have you seen the Sun Times article about CPD holding suspects past the 48 hour limit with "Secret Hearings"? What a misrepresentation of the truth! There is NO law that states there are only 48 hours. The City years ago changed from 72 hours to 48 hours. Then the City again changed it to having a charged suspect appear before a magistrate within 48 hours. This of course created issues because of off hours (ie late at night/early in morning), so judges will meet you at court houses, police stations, and sometimes at their residences. Transporting prisoners there is a No Go for obvious reasons. There are numerous Chicagoland suburbs in Cook County that still have 72 hours to charge a suspect. The Supreme Court has ruled "a Reasonable Amount of Time". Chicago took it to the extreme like they do in all matters. This Sun Times article is making it appear that we are holding suspects beyond 48 hours (without charging). Suspects are held beyond 48 hours when the timing doesn't allow them to make it to bond court in time. But they have been charged and a judge approved PC. Andy Grimm and Tim Novak must be getting treats from Groot for this bullshit article!

I’m glad that our contract is heading towards arbitration, but if a new regime was ejected that wanted to go back to the bargaining table, would the union be able to reverse course? I’m not interested in this getting dragged out a couple more years. My out of control property taxes could use a raise.

I don't have anything against Prieb, but I don't think he is driven enough or focuses on the issues that the current rank & file are dealing with. He's a great writer but everytime I ever got an email from him it was a lengthy write-up against the Northwestern exoneration program. That's great, keep fighting those liberals, but honestly, overturning "wrongful convictions" from decades ago doesn't matter to me. What about our contract? What about our benefits? What things are you fighting for us to get & keep?? To me, Prieb = Written articles against the wrongful conviction movement.
Now Catanzara... Met him at one of our roll calls. Heard what he had to say and I'll say, HE is the type we need when dealing with the city. They won't be able to ignore him or make him shut up and go away. To those of you who think he's too confrontational and won't accomplish anything? Well Trump haters have been saying the same thing every step of the way. 1. He's going to get us in WW3 with N. Korea... They backed down. 2. He's going to get us in WW3 with Iran...well they backed down too. Everytime Trump stands up to a potential threat, they back down and we win. I think Catanzara will be the same way. Since they can't ignore him and he will be a pain in their ass by exposing the city's lies, I think they'll be forced to bargain if for any reason just so he doesn't keep holding press conferences giving the public OUR side of the story. Search and watch the YouTube videos of him dealing with the mayor and city council. Tell me that's not the type of president we need. He won't take their bullshit. He's not crazy, he's respectful and professional. I really don't care about the negatives people keep saying about him. Don't care about any administrative bricks on him. It actually shows me he's a valid threat if they're trying So hard to silence him. The department heads (Appointed by the Supt. Who is Appointed by the Mayor) might be worried.
Like I said, met the man once. I'm not on his ticket and don't know him personally but he has my vote.

What is the actual plan for residency? Have your candidates stated any ideas or are they just using it as a burn card? I’m on the fire side and a few guys have campaigned that they will put residency on the table but they think the city won’t go for it so they don’t have an actual plan if the city says “ok what do you propose?”. Not sure if you guys on CPD have a better understanding of this.

You all keep harping on residency, be careful what you wish for. If any of you were really serious about it there would have been a law suit filed years ago. If city lost and they would, property values would plummet. Those few food remaining neighborhoods would cease to exist. It would increase the likelihood that city files bankruptcy and your pensions disappear. Think twice before you demand city lift residency for you and all city employees. You might not be able to afford housing in areas with reasonable commute times because those will fill fastest with city employees fleeing and cause property values in those areas to soar. New burdens on suburban schools will require additional taxes to build new schools. So again be careful what you wish for that greener grass could turn brown very fast.

No. How about he got CR'S against the boss(s) who REFUSED to approve the report he wrote listing EJ and Phlegar as offenders when they shut down the expressway. He had to make it official in order to cover his ass from the inevitable retaliation. Remember them telling us "A CR doesn't establish guilt or innocence, it just opens an official investigation". I don't know about you, but I've seen good cops get CRs on other cops over the years, many times simply to "cover their ass" by making the situation official. Just where would those More Qualified Supervisors come from. The next level of merit ranks or pull them out of Academy? If you eliminate the merited and flouted all you have left is the wanna bees. Not such a pretty picture but it is what needs to be done. Will take a generation to make that drastic of change unless you hire from outside. Then it could be done in two years.

"Search and watch the YouTube videos of him dealing with the mayor and city council. Tell me that's not the type of president we need. He won't take their bullshit. He's not crazy, he's respectful and professional".

You're right. They sure didn't want him speaking. The mayor just stopped listening and he called her on it. Then later they wouldn't let him speak at the podium again. He protested in front of her house after her comments about the FOP. He isn't afraid to tell it like it is. They don't like that at all. He's smart and deals in facts not liberal emotions. As far as the medical, if he uses the system to his advantage, why not. The clouted do it everyday. In fact many here talk of how people should take medical if they can do it.

But really if you weren't satisfied before, why vote for anyone in office now? Just more of the same is all you can expect. They had their chance, what have they really accomplished? Seems the same problems remain and continue to be talked about here by frustrated coppers on the job now and those retired. He has a different style than anyone else. I do believe they would hate it if he won, that alone is almost enough reason to vote for him. LOL

If you show city hall you vote in a block.....they might start listening up when any union rep is in front of them instead of calling them clowns. If there is one thing that our morally ethically and criminally challenged neighborhoods do, it’s vote and vote often. That’s why they are catered to by the scum politicians, because they vote in a block.

The new guys would be crazy not to leave but guys with 10 years plus are established in these neighborhoods with kids in schools, friends down the block, family around the corner. Yes. Other areas OUTSIDE THE CITY. That's the whole point, genius. Police don't want to be forced to live in the city. Cheaper houses, better schools, lower taxes, better neighborhoods, etc. It has nothing to do with what percentage of the population the police are. It has to do with the fact that certain neighborhoods in Chicago are saturated with CPD, CFD, and other city workers. Those neighborhoods are generally the safest, lowest crime, cleanest, and best places within the city to raise a family. If residency is lifted, those city workers would disappear from those neighborhoods, property values would decrease, and those neighborhoods would eventually turn to shit just like most other areas of the city. The only one who needs to get over themselves is you. You don't matter.

Why do you think resonates so well in the CPD. It will be the same for all city workers as well. They want out and the quicker the better. Many would be able to put their kids in good public school systems saving a lot of ton of money each year. A lot of the Catholic schools would be force to close or consolidate if they lost the city workers kids. tThose so called cop and City worker neighborhoods would be very quickly affected. For a the sake of argument there are roughly 30,000 city workers. If only 10% decided to leave with no residency requirements that would be 3,000 plus families leaving. Very large percentage live in about Four distinct city worker neighborhoods. 500-600 homes for sale in any one of those neighborhoods would choke the market causing a downturn in all home values. That would mean lower income individuals would now ne able to move in as an owner or renter. The decline begins. That 10% number just might be low. so again be careful what you wish and sue for.

Slow down there old timer, nothing I said is bullshit. You honestly think that the city is going to tank if Residency were to be lifted so who has half a brain now? Houses are being bought everywhere and you think just coppers are buying them? Look all around downtown, new condos going up on every block. You think coppers and city workers are buying them all? If you honestly believe that city workers are whats holding this city together than you are dumber than dogshit. I hate the residency requirement but I knew it was that way when I started and now I probably wouldnt move even if I had the choice, Ive established a life here. Whats wrong with giving people the option? The residency is one big factor of why that new guy sitting next to your salty ass probably has less than stellar qualifications to get on the job. It will have to be addressed to get qualified people on the job.

Why would they be a moron for voting for him? At least he speaks out. Everyone always says where is the FOP on this and that, and it's crickets from them most of the time. Talk about out for themselves. I watched him hammer at the mayor, she didn't like it one bit. At least he illustrates the problems not just goes along silently or just bitch on an anonymous blog. So of course he is in the doghouse a lot, they would love to fire him if possible. Whistle blowers often get into trouble too, just for speaking out and not going along with the crowd. The city wants a nice tame FOP leader that goes along. It's the Chicago Way.

Curious who you voted for and why? The same "leadership" as before? One can predict what one will get with that. Same as before, nothing much at all. But it was your vote. The NYPD complain about their union too but they at least do something and speak out. They turned their backs on Debozo, not something done here despite the terrible mayors that the city has had. I'd say they had their chance to prove their worth and failed. With a woke mayor and a surely a new woke sup in the wings coppers will need someone that isn't afraid to speak up. But that's just my opinion.

"Houses are being bought everywhere and you think just coppers are buying them?"

City workers are whats holding the city neighborhoods together. If the city workers are released from the residency requirement, your buying trend in the neighborhoods will be over. Caucasians and African-Americans have fled the city neighborhoods in droves and many more will flee should the residency requirement for city employees be lifted. And, if downtown is all that is left after the neighborhoods are decimated, the downtown buyers will disappear.

Dude, you're dense. Catanzara won't be any different than anyone that's been there before. Matter of fact, if he talks too much shit, they are going to start taking things away. You think he scares the city, you're crazy. We can't strike!!!! We got no leverage!!!! His big mouth won't help. God forbid he wins, then gets fired. What then???? You'll have a separated officer running the FOP. You might be okay with that, but I won't. A police officer with powers of arrest should be the rule. If you get fired, you lose your position with the FOP!!!

It will have to be addressed to get qualified people on the job.

Again false. City workers make up such a small percentage of the overall total that whole neighborhoods are not held together by city workers alone. The city worker neighborhoods have plenty of people that aren’t city workers that live there by choice. You are also assuming that every single city worker is going to say fuck it and jump ship the minute they can, and that’s just not gonna happen and you know it. The buying tread of paying 700k for a bungalow May be over, but overall buying in the neighborhoods won’t end. Stop it.

You really are in denial. City workers are the glue in the neighborhoods. Without the glue, things fall apart. When a neighborhood goes to blazes, people flee and they do not flee in increments.

Your analogy about people not jumping ship the minute they can shows you have very little knowledge of human nature. Have you ever lived in a neighborhood where people have literally fled overnight? The first one who sold always got the best deal. After the fracture, property values plummet and so does the quality of life. Release the city workers and you will have neighborhoods in decline. In turn, as the city workers go, so will go the remainder of the residents because no one wants to live in a declining neighborhood.

You keep trying to shove a round plug into a square hole, but it will not work no matter how many times you try it. You are in serious denial.

Remember. Early Voting is On for Illinois.

Pull a Dem Ticket. Republican Ticket this month hands SAO to Kim on a platter.

Conway. No one else.

And all you coppers in 45. Garrido is on the Dem Ticket. You have to Pull Democrat if you want to vote for him.

Feel free to fuck with cook county and Write me in for the Write in Judge Spots.

Why not vote for that female candidate, Donna More? She has more experience, has worked at the ccsa office longer than he has , has prosecuted and won more cases than Conway.

Although I understand that you know everything about human nature, you are wrong about this and I can see no amount of reasoning will change your mind. I can also bet that you are very close to retirement because only the really old timers left on the job are the ones complaining about being allowed to live where they want. That or you still owe way to much on your Edison Park house and are scared of loosing money cause you know your house wasnt worth the money that you paid. Either way, your still wrong and we will revisit this in a few years when your nice Edison Park neighborhood gets renamed Englewood north cause residency will be lifted at some point in the near future!

1) I never wrote that I know everything about human nature. I wrote that you know little of human nature. Don't exaggerate. It is unbecoming.
2) Close to retirement? Guess again! I most likely have been gone for longer than you have been otj.
3) Sold my house to an issue of mine at a very, very reasonable price, but not until 10 years after retirement when the issue was more financially secure and I, after much written research and many, many travel trips, was absolutely sure of where I wanted to reside.
4) You will not see residency lifted at least for the foreseeable future and, by foreseeable future, I am talking about never in my lifetime and most likely, never in your lifetime, so get used to it.
5) So you do agree? Without residency for city employees, neighborhoods will go to hell? It does my heart good that you do have a brain.
6) Wrong again! You are not doing well! Never lived north. And, if I sold my house in a viable neighborhood to a family member, you can guess where I previously owned a house.
