As has been pointed out here and elsewhere, the Department is failing to address even the most basic of concerns, including educating the public about the unique challenges faced by the police.

At no time were we offered wipes or sanitizer to clean these items and they were placed in the same bins to be distributed to the next class without being cleaned.

- Department phones - again, used near your face
- Tasers (and rifles) from the previous watch
- squad cars and squadrols - among the filthiest contraptions on four wheels
And for this, Districts were given a couple of boxes of rubber gloves and perhaps two dozen PPE suits dating back to last century and carried in sergeants cars. There are no wipes in the radio room to clean anything. Some wise officers buy their own out of an abundance of caution.
We're told by some people in-the-know that the brass is completely at sea - "merit" has doomed the Department to inaction. The consensus is that there is no plan. They cannot even agree on closing the Academy because they don't want to put 450 recruits in a no-pay status and they don't want the liability of sending them to Districts to help the desks or front offices because the rumor of COVID-19 being at the Academy seems true, and they are terrified of infecting a District with recruits to the point that they'd have to shut it down.
They don't even know what to do with the recent promotees...who ALL might be infected right now.

The department needs to provide the means and the time for officers to clean and sanitize things at shift switch off. The surfaces in a typical car can be sanitized with spray disinfectants in a few minutes.
Equipment can be wiped down pretty fast. Should take no more than 15 minutes at the start of each shift.

That is accurate. However in the last couple of days have become aware of people that have been admitted to icu, that don’t fall into the “elderly, pre-existing” category. One 40 year old male a healthy er dr. was admitted to the icu. He initially tested negative, then later positive. He worked in the hospital were many from the nursing home were transported. Tonight became aware of a couple, that are friends of a relative, that had to be admitted to icu. Both not over 50 and in decent health. This is nothing to play around with. There isn’t any kind of plan and they know it! I don’t even consider myself of the alarmist group but in general I don’t think there’s any problem staying away from larger functions where you may end up in close contact with more people on average. But there is absolutely no plan. Training scheduled for off site, cancelled. Training at academy not cancelled. Bullshit email from Beck that misleads people that there is no virus when in actuality what it is saying is there is no “confirmed case.” Why? Because testing isn’t readily available and it takes days to get results if you do get tested. So rather than suspend operations or be transparent, they’d rather go on business as usual, play games, etc. As far a virus goes, I’m healthy and not high risk but I have frequent contact with people that are high risk. I’m not going to put those people at risk because the department doesn’t think ahead. Any non-essential police activity should be suspended and not encouraged at this time. It should be this way for the overall good of others. This means: not demanding activity from street officers, no training anywhere as it puts groups together, have sanitation items available for radios etc (I’ve been bringing my own), no swiping or keying in a your code at the machines. Everyone on this department should be considering having a case of sniffles this weekend to get the message across loud and clear that they need us, police officers. Our health & Our loved one's health isn’t less important than students, politicians, teachers etc. Yes, we can’t shutter the police districts but you should be giving us the proper tools to do our jobs.

The recruits do not have to be put in a no pay status. Lightfoot just needs to do the right thing by them. CPS sent an email that their staff will be paid during the closing. The federal government has passed relief bills & employers with less than 500 workers are required to pay sick leave during quarantine. Of course the City has more than 500 workers. But they could just choose to do what millions of employers all over the world are doing...treat it as paid sick time. It's ridiculous that recruits don't get medical anyway.

Untrue. Not these days. It was true when everyone was a combat cherry, but not anymore. Some of the Special Forces soldiers I trained in 2006-2007 have 9 to 12 combat tours now. They are supreme Operators/killers with TOO much experience at hunting and killing people. Callous? Fuck yeah. Combat missions are commonplace when you have been doing them for 13 to 14 years straight. Most of the guys are divorced, blue-balled, angry, and have very little experience at anything else but Direct Action missions and divorce court.
In the MAC V-SOG Vietnam days, the "super Operators" that were our heroes had 2 to 4 tours. They could drink and bang whores in Nam. Not now. Back to back tours in the Middle East with no booze and no love will make a man very angry. Especially since the leadership is now filled with what you call "Merit Hacks". Affirmative Action hit the military in the 80s, now, they are firmly embedded at the top. We haven't won a war since.

First responders get exposed to more shit (germs, health hazards) then the general public. Overall, some, some mind you, first responderss have better immune systems then most as a result.
I don't say that to excuse and I am not a doctor (nor are you in any likelihood) so I remark only to comment. Yes, there should be supplies on hand to clean and disinfect. That said, some cops are better able to deal with exposure to infection then others.
As to who, among cops, is better able... Sadly that is unknown until the time is at hand. Stay safe all!

According to City Hall all districts and lockups were issued masks, rubber gloves and disinfectant wipes on Friday. Has anyone seen these? Are they still sitting on pallets at Equipment and Supply? {Honk Honk} This department is Clown-World and putting all of us at risk.

In case you hadn't noticed, China is not the only one dealing with this thing and their numbers were probably never realistic in the first place. Spain's numbers are shooting way up too, and they're expected to be the next one to go for a total shutdown.
Don't get me wrong, I don't trust the media and WHO any farther than I can throw them but there appears to be some fire to all of the smoke. America has a better medical system than these other guys but it's not foolproof, so a risk does exist. What's unfortunate is that the various groups given public trust have behaved so irresponsibly for so long that it's impossible to make a fair assessment of what's actually going on right now.

Today on WBEZ, a call-in person noted that near-north big-box grocery stores had sold-out many pantry staple items, including rice. She then noted "word's getting around" that grocery stores "on far south-side" had plenty of same pantry staple items still stocked on shelves. She noted she drove to Jewel at 95th and Stony Island and bought her supply of bagged rice. She also noted, that if people were so inclined, to go to these south-side grocery chain-stores, given that their north-side grocery stores are often depleted of popular pantry-food items. (No info on status toilet paper and hand-sanitizer at this Stony Island Jewel.)
What does this tell us? That south-side folks around Stony Island and 95th don't feel that same compulsion to "stock up for shortages and quarantine". I think all hell will break loose next week. Time for curfew, time for restrictions on unaccompanied teens, etc.

Amazing that the department not the city provided hand sanitizer to the district so that you could refill your own personal sanitizer. I actually have to stop by CTA booths to refill my personal bottle which I constantly use. The CTA booths are stocked with 2 or 3 large bottles while we the officer's walk around with nothing. Sure you can blame the department but let's also put blame on the city. The department would rather we catch up on our Elearning so we can meet the consent decree deadline while we are using the few computers that thousands of officer's use each and everyday. Has the department even sent anyone in to sanitizer the lock up or processing area where prisoner's off the street enter each and every day. As I said before the department is or was one major incident away to actually finding out how I'll prepared we really are.
