This is Going to Get Worse
- Chicago police broke up at least two house parties Saturday night as dozens of people there defied orders to stay at home and keep away from large groups during the coronavirus pandemic.
Police got a call about a party in the Noble Square neighborhood. Officers showed up around midnight and found dozens of people inside a home near Greenview Avenue and Blackhawk Street. Officers then told everyone to leave. One woman leaving the party said around 30 people, mainly family and friends, attended.
Not too long after that police got a call for a large gathering in the Austin neighborhood at an apartment building in the 4900 block of West Van Buren. Two men leaving the party were even wearing protective face masks.
And again we ask - what happens when someone says, "No"? When someone insists that the Fourth Amendment against unreasonable search and seizure, not to mention being secure in their homes reigns supreme?

OT; I predict that the consent decree won't survive this virus crisis. The city is fucked financially. They will have to freeze all hiring, including police. A detective that has tested positive for the Chinese Flu recently spent some time conducting part of his investigation at Area North and interacted with several detectives at Belmont and Western. ....as of just yesterday, the Illinois National guard was deployed, according to them, only for medical support and support for things like getting meals to people. Since about 1824, the trend in the law was that the U.S. Constitution left matters like quarantines to the individual States. But the 4th Amendment requires that anyone can test their own individual quarantine in the courts. Since the quarantine orders and orders limiting group size and individual distances are limited in scope and based upon a reasonable degree of scientific certainty, an individual found in violation who sued contesting the order as it applied to him would either probably lose the lawsuit or be mooted out at the end of the quarantined time before he got his day in court.

My brother in law is a doctor at a suburban hospital. He is a big Trump backer. Spoke to my sister yesterday. She told my brother in law is genuinely terrified. They are older, in their 60’s. She said he has never ever been like this. He thinks Trump needs to step up and people need to do what Governor is saying. He hates Pritzger, but is very worried about people. Please take this seriously. It is not the flu!
I'm a big supporter of the Constitution and the Bill of Rights. Yes, we have the "Right of the People to 'peaceably assemble'", however one can make the argument that in the middle of a public health emergency with a very contagious infectious disease making the rounds as a Planetary Pandemic, that assembling into numbers of unrelated people is not a PEACEFUL assembly because it endangers us all.
Consider that one can carry the virus and shed it while not showing symptoms. That it can survive in the air for hours, and on surfaces for days (up to 6 on some surfaces). This means that someone who doesn't know they have it, can spread it around and leave it on surfaces that many, many other people encounter and then spread around. They get infected, and do the same.
The quickest solution to this is to stay the fuck home. Relax. Chill. Drink or smoke at home by yourself or with your immediate family. Tell your friends to do the same.
Is two weeks that much to ask so we don't get even more people sick?
That's what needs to be considered when determining whether or not it's a "Peaceful Assembly".

Do you not find it strange how a virus which has infected and killed far less people than the annual strains of flu and cold viruses has been used to shut down so much of the world, herd people into a state of panic-stricken toilet-paper-hoarding madness and, in essence, usher in a form of martial law all across the United State and many other countries? As of the time of this posting 30 American states have activated their National Guard units. There is even talk of deploying regular military personnel to cities like New York and Los Angeles. What are these soldiers going to do? Shoot the virus cells?

Somebody is right here, and since we don't know how the story will end yet, let me speculate by extrapolating what we do know. Every little thing these days "overwhelms" the healthcare system and our local government to boot. The Opioid crisis, the Gun Violence crisis and now the Coronavirus crisis. It says more about our healthcare system and leadership than the actual cause of the crisis. Funny how they always seem to survive and find more money. I'm sorry grandpa couldn't stop smoking and may die of Pneumonia but that's not a police matter. Even if 5000-10000 senior citizens died from this over the next few weeks that's a tragedy but certainly not a national emergency. The longer this goes on the more people here are questioning the need to make this city a Third-World totalitarian state. Nope it is really a cold virus and much more contagious than a flu virus . It is one of 7 species of Corona viruses, 4 of which are fairly harmless except for 1 that causes 30% of common colds. The other three are not so nice , they are MERS, SARS and the new one CoV-SARS-19. While it seems to only kills maybe 1% its puts about 10% in the hospital. And it ain't nice. The severe fatal cases you die drowning in your own lung fluids , and you die alone, they don't allow family near in those cases and the doctors and nurses simply spend as little time as possible near such cases because society can't afford to lose health people, plus many/most are very scared of this stuff after they see people die or dying from it. Read some accounts from NYC.
The 4900 W. Van Buren block has murder, rape, kidnappings, rats, roaches, gangs and drive bys to contend with. Despite the severity of Covid-19, is that block going to worry about it?
