A Cop and an Art Gallery

Remember how Groot and her sycophants were (and are still) painting cops as the problem in many neighborhoods? "Occupying forces." "Slave patrols." Pretty much mercenaries. We and others countered that cops are coaches, scout leaders, school councils, and volunteers across a wide range of positions - the glue that helps hold a neighborhood together.

Here's a cop doing it in one of the most downtrodden of areas:
  • When Corry Williams was converting an old West Side church into an art gallery, he noticed a 9-year-old girl named A’mya peeking in the window every day. Now, five years later, A’mya’s artwork is a permanent fixture of his 345 Art Gallery.

Williams says that’s what he wanted the gallery to do — bring people in the neighborhood together, especially children, which he aims to do through classes, community events, murals and field trips.

Over the last five years, Williams has juggled the gallery at 345 N. Kedzie Ave. and collecting with his work as a police officer, which he’s been for more than 20 years. But once he walks inside the gallery, he says, he’s a regular guy, not a cop.
A lot of people make noise about "helping" the community and paying lip service to "creative outlets" to alleviate hope and despair.

Here's a cop actually doing it in a part of town that has been abandoned by the politicians for decades.

The kids in that neighborhood aren't going to remember Groot or the aldercreatures when they get older. They're going to remember this cop and the safe space he helped create for however long it lasts. Best of luck Officer Williams.

I don’t know him as an officer, but I read that article and well, I was impressed that he did what a lot of people wouldn’t be bothered with. I worked with juveniles and one of the saddest things I saw was how low the bar was set for them. Their own communities fail them & pandering liberals truly didn’t expect much from them. What’s defined as their “culture” and their “Blackness” is ridiculous and limiting. In my time, I ran into some truly clever, smart kids (had a 4 year old read my notes, had a girl talk to me about Robert Frost the poet). In many cases, it was only a matter of time before the community ruined them. Drop anyone of us there too & the outcome wouldn’t be much different. I hope that officer’s gallery grows. Hell, I might even ask to volunteer.

Corey is real nice guy. Had the chance to visit his gallery once when he was featuring a fellow cops artwork. The guy is always very pleasant and genuinely gets into these creative projects. And of all places, the west side. Good luck to him in his artistic pursuits.

A solid guy, an excellent officer and an attribute to an area of this shithole city that is otherwise a lost cause.

Well done, Corry. 011th District proud!

SCC, if you find out how and where to make donations to Officer Williams' art gallery, please post it here. Me and my friends would love to donate to this worthy cause. I'm sure that the gallery will need some help when it is able to re-open.

There was a time when politicians and community activists actually did things to help the community! Today they just make a lot of noise and raise taxes and find ways to steal from the community!!!

I often see people complaining that their neighborhood does not provide parks and services for the kids. I live in a wealthy area, the local government does not offer services or parks here either. The people have to work, volunteer, or fund projects if they want them there for the kids. Behind every program, there is a parent or two that made it happen. If the parents just sat on the porch drinking, doing drugs, and complaining, their kids may turn out to be criminals.

Having worked next door to his art gallery, the place really is a beacon for what could be. Always well kept and peaceful in an otherwise rough area. Congratulations to him and all those who have helped make the gallery what it is today.

One of the first things that shock a new officer is seeing how children live in Chicagos poor neighborhoods. You immediately say to yourself 'these kids don't stand a chance.'. My father came on in 1958 and said it. I came on in 1986 and said it. My son came on in 2012 and said it. So who's fault is this???

He, and his work, reminds me of Don McIlvaine who had an art gallery in the Lawndale neighborhood in the late 60s. My parents purchased several pieces of original art from him that I still own today. I'm sure the positive effects of having a gallery in the neighborhood will be long lasting. Here's a little on McIlvaine. Know your history.

McIlvaine (aka "Donnie Mac") was the second director of the North Lawndale-based art gallery, Art & Soul for a six-month period from 1969 to 1970. The gallery, which ran from 1968 to 1972, was a collaborative project between the Museum of Contemporary Art (MCA) and the notorious Chicago street gang, the Conservative Vice Lords (or CVL, Inc.).

Its enlightening to see officer Williams give these American children alternatives to the violent environment that surrounds them. I sincerely hope these American "dreamers" see the light and are put on a path to fulfilling their dreams. Hillary Clinton stressed it takes a village nonsense. On the contrary it talks good people to step up to the plate and give these children love and guidance in an otherwise toxic environment. Thank You Officer Williams for taking the lead and offering these children an alternative. You are planting the seeds to lifelong success. Your role as a leader is certainly acknowledged and appreciated.

"...Guys like him are not police officers..."

Guys like him are the smart ones. They develop other interests outside of police work. They will have a great retirement. There is nothing sadder than seeing the old guys every month at their retirement breakfasts trading the other guy's thirty year old war stories and waiting for the next golf outing.
