Situational Awareness Lacking
If you're going to rob someone, you really ought to look at the neighborhood you're in:
- Four men are in custody after they tried to rob an off-duty Chicago police sergeant within steps of the 19th District police station in Lakeview early Wednesday. A fifth offender got away.
The 40-year-old sergeant was on the 900 block of West Addison when five men approached him and demanded his valuables around 2:18 a.m., according to a CPD spokesperson and a source.
All five offenders fled the scene when the sergeant pulled out a handgun and announced that he is a police officer, according to the department. Cops searched the area and detained four suspects on the 900 block of West Fletcher about 30 minutes later.
The attempted hold-up unfolded about 100 yards from the front door of the Town Hall District station at 850 West Addison.
Thankfully, Crimesha will release them all on minimal bail that they'll pay with the proceeds from previous robberies and they can continue to turn their lives around.

I saw the POD video. You can see the off duty get into position as best as he could after 5-6 offenders approach him.
He seems to distract them for a split second and draws his weapon. They see him draw his weapon and they run. He chases them on foot by himself. 5-6 against 1 and he still ran after them. Glad he is okay and all were placed into custody. Everyone please be safe out here.
I'd like to think this was a lack of situational awareness, but fear that it may be a sign of just how brazen and empowered thieves have become thanks to Foxx.

That area around the 019 station is the supreme muggers alley. No surprise there. The victim selection process appears to have failed miserably in this one. What a great place to get strong armed or house robbed, easy Red line access for shitheads of all stripes who show up in search of victims.
Not to mention the huge ass police blue lives matter banner on the same block hanging from someones home where he was robbed. These criminals like most, if not all, are complete morons. But God forbid, if the copper shot the robbery offenders, their graduation photos would be shown from the 5th grade. Good job by the PO for not ventilating one of them too and the fine upstanding citizens were lucky they did not display a weapon or they would have been ventilated. Hope they were social distancing during the holdup.
Nowadays you shoot someone with a gun while working you are a step away from jail. Shoot someone off duty with no weapon recovered off duty might as well say bye bye freedom. They would end up charging this guy and then blast him all over media across the United States on how he shot an "unarmed model citizen" regardless of situation. What I came to understand was this Sgt was in a bad situation surrounded by several "usual suspects" and managed to pull his gun giving chase and help placing these guys under arrest. He was alone and a very tough situation when you are outnumbered. He could have frozen and not done a thing. It seems he did what he could to get to his gun and make it out alive. This is the best case scenario. The city would have let this man fry. The Mayor would have turned her back and he would be at call back pending a murder investigation.
Glad he didn't have to shoot any of them, all it would do is bring him grief.

These were my observations;
It seems these individuals were hiding in an alley and the ODS couldn't see them as he is exiting his vehicle. The ODS seems to be preoccupied with something possibly keys. The individuals start approaching as the ODS enters his gate. As he enters he is startled to see 5 individuals 15-20 feet from him. At this point they have the tactical advantage because it is five vs one.The ODS has a choice go for his weapon and hope he doesn't get shot while going for it or try to do something else to make time so he can get gun. He is smart enough to throw attention somewhere else in turn all five look away from his direction. This gave him just enough time to get it. As the gun comes out they begin to run. The ODS chases them which is a natural instinct for us.
The cavalry shows up and along with ODS all are placed into custody for the exception of one. The ODS did not got shot and the big kahuna above had us in his devine glory last night.
The ODS would have been more than justified to shoot if he could have grabbed his gun at the very beginning.
Keep in mind if these idiots had no gun and were shot and killed CPD would be all over media outlets claiming we killed an unarmed straight A student and an inspiring productive person to society. Also a $100,000,000 wrongful death lawsuit that they would want the ODS to pay from his own pockets.
Point to rambling-----> the decision you have a second to make will follow you for the rest of your life. So make the best one you feel is right and keep you alive to fight another day.

Thank you for displaying the situation. People never realize how they would react to a situation like this. You have 1 gun but you have no idea how many guns are against you. One false move and you can get shot from 5 different ways. You have to look at 10 hands instead of just one for a split second while being by alone. This is virtually impossible. I was told this Sgt went above and beyond using some smart thinking on the fly and can't say I would have done the same. Sometimes you have to use your smarts in order to get an advantage when faced with a disadvantage. I have to commend you for your extraordinary bravery in a dangerous situation and keeping with the fight. He could have just called 911 instead of chasing them alone. The police in us kicks in and you can't help but do your job off duty as you would on duty. Great job and way to save us from unwanted national attention.

Maybe they wanted to win the "Ghetto Lottery", by provoking a cop to shoot one or all of them, a sort-of modified version of russian roulette, where other person holds gun, points it at you, and fires, perhaps shooting you, or not. Police shooting is worth $2.25 million to $5 million, right? If your job skills are limited to dealing drugs, or mugging folks, well it's discouraging to see no opportunities of advancement, and see there's the big-risk but big-reward alternative, of CPD-inflicted bodily injury.

I was on scene and can say this Sgt kicked ass. He took on all these assholes and took the fight to them. Even with all going in his world he took the time to say, thanks. We are not free from fear & the oppression of criminals, juvenile crime & street gangs. Police are not allowed to pursue criminals, but Waves of criminals are allowed to roam our city where they rob, rape, and shoot guns with glee. As the governor suspended our rights over a virus in the name of protections. Maybe our nation needs to suspend the rights of people accuseded of crimes in the name of safety & public welfare. Our nation was founded with the constitution to protect people from government and religious zeolots, not be a tool for killers, rapist and thieves to take advantage of a society hard working well meaning upstanding citizens working towards the greater good. As the post above stated the only people society goes after with vigor, and take away rights from- is the police.

I could be wrong, but I believe the lack of situational awareness referred to the 5 shitbirds. Working police can spot a shit head from a mile away, and situationally aware criminals should be able to spot a cop. These 5 morons didn’t know their surroundings and didn’t evaluate their target. The shitheads should’ve known, but they weren’t paying attention.
This sergeant works in my unit. He is legitimately a great supervisor from what I can tell. He is always riding with his guys and backing them up working along side of them. He seems to treat them like adults and good to them. His team genuinely looks happy. They are lucky. I'm stuck with a sergeant who I'm lucky to see once a night and always upset when I ask for anything.
Currently in my sqaud car reading tcomments on this post and simply amazed. To the UPPER ECHELON if you read what you call this insignificant blog then read this. My buddy works over in area 3 and said this guy came into work later that day after I'm sure a hell of a night. He is back at it working with his people on the streets. How many of you so called bosses would come to work later that same day? In reality how many have you ever worked the streets to begin with. You people would most likely hit the medical or have to take a few days to recuperate from such an ordeal. No chance in hetes you would have ever chased so that notion is out of the window. You command no respect and afraid of your own shadow. Leadership (noun) the action of leading a group of people or an organization. I think the comment you are referring agrees with you. Think they meant they were such idiots they couldn't see the station and sauad cars down the block and or so brazen they didn't care. The Sgt couldn't see them because they were hiding in an alley at a distance so no way he could spot them or be aware.
