Faster Please

As we've stated here numerous times, please make our job easier:
  • Three aldermen are proposing the termination of a $33 million contract between the Chicago Police Department and Chicago Public Schools after two weeks of widespread protests have rejuvenated efforts to remove officers from schools.

The aldermen plan to introduce an ordinance at Wednesday’s City Council meeting that would permanently end the relationship between the police department and public school system and prevent another contract from being signed.

But the proposal faces a tall task: convincing Mayor Lori Lightfoot, whose support will likely be necessary for the ordinance to pass. The mayor’s background includes a stint as the Police Board president, and earlier this month, in the face of protests, she opposed the removal of cops from schools.

Activists across the country have demanded police-free schools for years, pointing to detrimental impacts on students of color whose behavior in school is criminalized and leads to a “school-to-prison pipeline,” in which in-school incidents lead directly to criminal charges and jail.
The $33 million argument is a sleight-of-hand - it's all Chicago taxpayer money, it's just shifted around under different headings.

And barring a criminal act, Police shouldn't be anywhere near a school.

They blame the police officers anyway.

This the perfect place to use social workers and de-escalation tactics.
The innocent young children in schools need to be shielded from the violence inherent in the police system.
Those sweet little 6 foot 200 pound darlings are always amenable to reason.
I don't know why the police should be in schools in the first place?
Let the CPS show the way, non violently and progressively.

What's the Worst that could Happen?

Most CPD grads (the 50% that stick it out four years) are NOT prepared for life. Cops inside the school may not make a lot of difference, but at least there might be some better environment to conduct some learning in.

Schools will be more susceptible to being up-for-grabs as most teachers are focused on their pensions and nothing else.

It is sad when the only thing you hear them discussing over coffee is how many years they have left to do and how much money they will make after leaving.

Where is the equivalent of COPA for CPS?

♦The last part, which is also going to be critical, is with regards to mental health and homelessness and addiction. We want to be able to have co-responder programs where we’re going to incentivize. A lot of the work that police officers are doing today deals with medical issues and homelessness. And we want to make sure that police officers can do policing and that they can implement best practices throughout the country to figure out how they can deal with a lot of the other issues that come up along the way.

I am 76 years old and attended 2 public high schools years ago. Both schools had POs assigned to them. One was an old country Irishman who seemed to pop up every place where you wanted to sneak a smoke (Lucky Strike). They were no nonsense coppers but occasionally would indulge in friendly conversation. Did the CPS need them to patrol the school areas? Probably not. But they were never asked to go into a classroom to discipline unruly students. I spent 32 years in the Department. Been retired 16 years and my heart breaks every time I watch the TV news or read the papers. I feel so bad for the young officers of CPD and all the other troubled cities. The old Marxist/Lenin strategy seems to be working, First take control of the police and then the military and the prize is yours.. Old Time Cop

Schools exist based on statistics. How many are enrolled, what are the test scores, how many are graduating, how many are we losing. They do not keep track of violent crime in or around schools, we do that. I really feel that the time has come to remove officers from schools. The problem will be the results. Fighting in schools, fighting at school dances, fighting at sports events, and the fighting at dismissal times. It would be foolish to not have officers in these gang infested schools but the officers are being placed into an impossible situation. It's not worth days with a sat/sun day off group.

Respectfully, SCC, I don't entirely agree with you regarding removing cops from schools. Where I do agree with you is pulling CPD out of Chicago Public Schools, for all the reasons you've stated. But in the suburbs, it can be different.

I moved out of the city many years ago and in my suburb we have an officer in the middle school and another in the high school. It works well for us here, with our officers supporting the school's leadership and vice versa. Law enforcement action is taken only when school discipline is no longer appropriate. Observing our small police department, we see that officers working in one of the schools are more likely to be promoted to Sergeant later.

As a parent, I want my kids to have positive interactions with cops, and the protective benefit if there's an external threat is worth paying my tax money for.

If the Officers are pull out of the Chicago Public Schools, I believe a lot of the Schools, will be out of control, and there will be many large groups of children, fighting after school, EVERYDAY, along with the Parents of the little Angels. People fail to realize, the number one reason why we have Police in our Schools, is to protect the Students and Staff from an Active Shooter situation. It comforts me to know the Police are in the Schools, and if some crazy individual with a gun enters a school to kill as many people as he or she can, the Police will respond immediately because of their presence, an eliminate the threat.

"Winters is a leader of Justice for Families and The 411 Movement for Pierre Loury. She is the great-aunt of Loury, and formed the latter group after Loury, 16, was killed by Chicago police in April 2016."

An endless number of these "groups." The advance of consumer electronics has made it worse; it used to be a spare bedroom full of papers, typewriter, and so forth. Now it's a lot of flickering things on a cell phone, run a dozen "organizations."

"And Groot even considering this moron as any sort of fair or balanced or and kind of open mind is a joke - she's as closed minded as any unreconstructed racist, blinded by hate and driven only by her failures."

A classic description; by the time you collect 20 or 30 to sit in a room using up time and looking for money, how many thousands of pounds of sheer ignorance and resentment does that add up to?

...and what is this quirk that they PANIC if someone outside their i-know-my-girls group even speaks to them?

Either there is 'way too much business going on in there, or not much at all.

Such is the fifty-year-old board game called "Community Development."

...and I just heard a radio spot about "millions of dollars needed," something to do with "a pandemic and a cry for racial justice."

...and now, having done everything possible to "not dwell on" the wrecked commercial strips that brought CFD more working fires than the 1968 riots, Groot has turned out another agonized product of her twisted soul, a whole video about the great complications of "opening the lakefront in careful phases, one at a time, here's your reward! Ding! Ding! Ding!"

It's always morning on Sesame Street. After the raised-by-wolves contingent told her "F--k you too, go home" and hammered out all the plate glass they could reach - 80 school windows with one golf club up in Norwood, for God's sake and walks on an I-bond - the working population is barely sticking its nose out, "Well they have these barriers and I see people kind of back there but I don't wan't to get arrested but I don't think they'll arrest me."

It's a sure thing - some schools will be calling for a civil disorder four tines a day, and others won't even notice the police are gone.

Yeah, all the potential death-penalty stuff will now be shunted off to some "restorative justice panel," because everybody knows actions have no consequences, and society is merely a fruit-bowl, a giant cornucopia to pick from in a leisurely manner...

Some parents still try. Gal next to me in the grocery yells at the kid! "Stop that! You can't do whatever you want in here! This isn't school!"

$33 million ? For 166 High schools* ?
That’s a lot of cabbage that could go towards books, pencils and paper for a 9 month stint.
$33 million is Groot Bucks is another story, worth about 60-85% in CTU membership votes. Alls fair to chip away at Prickwrinkle’s base.

(* or learning centers, academic facilities, alternative and charters, with maybe actual 4 or 5 at or above grade level math-science-reading-comprehension commensurate accredited schools.)

So in light of the CPS closing their doors and educators have been sequestered (like an Dem presidential candidate) with full pay for 2 hours of -40% participation in iPad e-Lernins during the StayAtHome executive order, have the Skool Police been subject to 12 hour assignments out of their respective Districts ? That 6-7 months of street duty should by now have them ready to make that transition back to active patrol.

FunFact:
$33 mil can buy about 1000 vehicles for former skool police to do Beat work, with a 4 on 2 off schedule.

WHO will be in charge????? Will the police take charge or be directed by some non-sworn city worker????? How will that work, will you point, laugh and leave or fart in their general direction?

Does the social worker tell the officer to arrest someone that the officer has not observed do anything wrong. The officer taking direction from the social worker to arrest this person and the person resists. How much force would be necessary???? Would the social worker now become the judge and in their opinion the officer exceeded the necessary force to make an arrest and now the social worker becomes a witness against the officer. Not a risk many of you should take, in my humble retired opinion.

I say please remove the police from public schools, ever alderman who votes or request that officer's be removed from schools should have their names posted and placed on notice that they voted yes to removing the police from schools and when the 1st shooting occurs the public should be reminded who made these request and hold each one accountable

For the school cops what is it like to work in the schools and is it a lot different where the demographics skewed Hispanic, black & white? And how is for the kids especially the good kids who would like to learn? Is there are lot of bullying extortion violence or are schools basically orderly ?Overall the demographics are 46.6% Hispanics 35.9% blacks and only 10.8% white kids, and vary by school in some schools there are only one or two white kids. What are the the very much minority white kids school lives like and are their parents crazy for sending them to CPS schools?

By James Brown • 19 hours ago
