As a retired lieutenant, who also loved this job and served for over 35 years and fought the corruption in the south side districts during my time, I am saying the same thing. Do as little as possible. The city administration and the media are not your friends and will run over you. Do not make street or vehicle stops and do not chase anyone in a vehicle or on foot. as a private detective, I use Signal. You can encrypt your messages, texts or photos and set them to disappear within hours. It is a great tool. It cannot be traced to you phone and a forensic search of your phone will not uncover the messages because it goes through a private app.

On a side note, I thought the tax law changes didn’t allow for writing off cell phones and work equipment anymore. So in theory, nobody should be considering their cell phones as partially used for work. Am I wrong about this?

Relax.. this is only a preservation order. They throw preservation orders around all the time. It doesn’t mean they are taking a single thing. They especially are not taking personal cell phones away. In order to get info from your personal cell phone they need to show cause and they have to have a specific reason why they believe pertinent information is on your phone due to a specific civil, criminal or administrative investigation. They can’t just go cherry picking cell phones to see what’s on them. BWC footage and in car camera and department phones are another thing because obviously they are uploaded and they belong to a department anyways so no shock there. Please don’t worry that everyone’s or even anyone’s personal phone will be looked at. This is pretty much the common template and wording of any preservation order given these days. You normally are given the same exact order in any lawsuit you gat and normally unless it’s a police shooting or something your phone is never a factor.

This is sad as hell. I used to live in Chicago, over ten years. I left before Groot got her hands on things, but I was already sick of the sky-high state taxes and the rest.
But now? Seeing what police have to go through, I'm completely pissed off about how you guys are treated. I'm not nor ever have been on the force, but I have plenty of friends who are.

I have (2) words: search warrant....... which they have zero P.C. to get. Nowadays, a subpoena is Only going to get you incoming & outgoing calls (who places calls anymore) along with subscribers information. You can not get any text messages from the telephone provider. These pricks are just trying to scare you guys into surrendering you private cellphones. Tell them to come with a warrant. There’s zero P.C. and they know it. They would have to articulate in an affidavit that you, the specific individual, did something of a criminal nature and swear to those facts before a Judge.

We need to all take a stand. This has been said a million times, but we need to literally become like the fore department response wise. We can be ready and out on the street but need to me stationary for most of the tour. Maybe mix it up, sit in one spot for 10 minutes and then drive around for 15 minutes. Then park in another spot for 20 min and repeat all tour long. Only respond to your job you are given. Do your job by providing paper and then documenting on the air that you are then “touring the area” for the offender. And actually drive for the GPS. I’m guessing no offender will be found... ever. Do your job and that’s it. Now cowboy stuff. No getting activity to keep a spot. Do your job and that’s it. Only respond no proactive. People absolutely need to be shamed and sat down if the are still doing anything proactive. This supt is not on our side nor is this mayor.
The request is OVERLY BROAD and as such is denied.
GPS on the phone ? Who has the data ? The phone company ? You need a warrant ! Do the phones have a different “secret” GPS tracking apps ?? Keep the company phone off in your desk

I was talking with a Sgt in Traffic Unit and he flat out said he'd retire before he gives them his phone records or messages.

Refuse. The department cannot " order you" to turn in your phone or records. Let them get a subpoena

Ya, I spend a lot of time deleting emails and they come right back! I know I’m missing a step to ditch the emails from my IPhone???
Jagbag Commander went off on me for not calling him immediately about some stupid homicide a few years ago. Told him I was on my way in to tell him All about it and don’t use use my own phone for CPD/Community hijinks.
