Off Duty Tragedy
- A Chicago police officer is dead and a woman is in critical condition after they were exposed to carbon monoxide at a home Tuesday in Albany Park on the Northwest Side.
The off-duty officer, a 36-year-old man, and the woman, 29, were found unresponsive about 7:54 p.m. in a home in the 3900 block of West Ainslie Street, Chicago police said. They were both taken to Swedish Covenant Hospital, where the officer died and the woman was in critical condition.
The officer was identified as Xu Meng, according to the Cook County medical examiner’s office. Autopsy results were pending as of Wednesday afternoon.
Officer Meng is probably familiar to many readers as he has appeared on the recruitment posters in recent years. The investigation is ongoing but this appears to be a very bad accident. Deepest condolences to his family and wishing a speedy recovery to his wife.

So very sad. My condolences to all who knew them.
Knew Meng, dedicated, a good man. The good die young.
His wife unfortunately passed away as well. Deepest condolences to the family and the child they left behind. The wife was also a police officer.
Sad ! RIP officer, thank you for your service.
R I P Officer Meng.
Truly sad. May you Rest In Peace.
I have accidentally started my car in my garage with my remote start before.
Thankfully it automatically shut down after a while.
An hour later the home CO Detector by the garage door was screaming.
Please, please make sure you have more than one CO Detector.
They do expire too. The CO Detector is only good for 7 years.
If it is beeping, it has expired, and you need to buy a new one.
BUY A NEW CO DETECTOR TOMORROW!!!
She passed yesterday.
Very tragic. Kids alright.
Working 12hr days straight for 12 straight days, ridiculous! So tired he forgot to turn off his car and fell asleep in the upstairs apt above garage.
Why isnt this in the media!!!
He was a great guy 👍🏼 RIP
Our dear mayor never worked so hard and never will.
It's only the little people who die like this.
Too sad for words. Get one of those carbon monoxide detectors and keep the battery fresh.
This officer worked in my district, what a sad, sad story. This was definitely a terrible ending to a terrible 12 days of no days off and 12-14 hrs shifts. My heart goes out to the family. RIP Meng, we'll take it from here.
The photo shows an attached garage under the apartments and said a car engine was left running inside.
An accident that shouldn’t have happened.
With all the electronic sensors, alerts, cameras, and monitoring that goes into vehicles today, none can be more deadly than a unattended idling engine. Auto makers need to figure this out.
A cops prayer. Oh dear little Jesus please watch over and pray for these two wolves who have now been lost among the sheep and walk the beat in heaven. May you continue to fight the good fight in heavens police department against all that is evil and good in the eyes of St Michael the patron saint of police officers and cops nationwide in America. God bless and god speed and may the thin blue line comfort you on your trip to the heavens gates. When you get to the door you will be let in and report to heavens police station for your assignment so you may continue to be a hero in the eyes of those we serve almighty god. Now you are a police angel in heaven with blue wings forever and no need to worry in heavens best there are no 12 hour days. God bless you and your families and it’s a terrible tragedy AMEN.
Any word on what caused it? Leaking exhaust on hot water heater, etc... it could be something to look out for. Don’t want a repeat!
God Bless, May he Rest In Peace, Amen.
Got my CO detector for free at one of those stupid town hall meetings. City always has a "free shit" table at these things and most of the rabble just want T-shirts. I clean up with smoke and CO detectors. Just go out of uniform. Bring a shopping bag.
I join all my brothers and sisters in the same sentiment... "Sad"
Rest in Peace our brother.
Prayers for the hospitalized injured as well.
God bless you officer and your family.

His wife hasn’t passed as of 9 am Thursday and CPD says she wasn’t an employee.

Had one and it was working. A neighbor says she heard it beeping for hours, but did not call 911.
This is horrible! God bless them both and may they rest in peace.
12+ hour days are a killer.
This was no accident! This officer was overworked and fatigued and now it cost him and his wife their lives. Would you want a surgeon operating on you who has had no days off and forced to work 12 hour days? I hope his family sues the city. RIP officers.
So very very sorry.
When the press reports that the normal level of carbon monoxide in a house is 5-30 ppm they are absolutely full of shit. It should be zero. Not all detectors will display a low amount reading, but will alerts at 30ppm continuous for an hour. I have 4 KIDDE Model KN COEG3 w/battery backup, which will display any low amount. I have one in the basement workroom, basement furnace/hot water heater room, upstairs outside the bedrooms and one in the garage. I have never received a reading above zero except in the attached garage. Just starting the Tahoe can result in an immediate reading above 30. I pull out after starting, leave the door open to air out and the CO clears. I recommend multiple and the latest smoke detectors.
Tragedies like this have occurred numerous times before.
There is NO reason I can see why with all the computers and sensors in modern vehicles why when the transmission is in PARK, there is no weight on the driver or passenger seat for a certain amount of time, say 2 minutes, the car doesn't shut off.
This could be a software upgrade.
Starting recently if you buy a stationary generator they monitor the engine air intake for Carbon monoxide and if it's above a certain level the generator shuts off.
Terrible tragedy.......can’t even imagine the pain the two families are going through.....
And perhaps, to prevent another such tragedy, (and I am NOT being insensitive)
the families should sue the automaker for this flaw in their auto......
At least with the “fob” keyless cars, it does shut off eventually......when the fob is far away.
With the smoother running engines (very quiet) and the push button start/stop,
There needs to be a safety mechanism installed......no weight in drivers seat? Shuts off....
No weight in either front seat, shuts off.......
If your air bag can show Off when no one in seat, it should be possible somehow....
to install a kill switch.....
This was too great a tragedy........
Please make a donation for his family on the FOP website.
My prayers go to the Officers family. Absolutely tragic! Heartbreaking.
The abuse on police is abuse for the sake of abuse. Abuse of the little one, the Officers and the elderly.
Many prayers for all Officers and may the Lord save all of us.
this could have been avoided if they didnt work us into the ground. 12 hr shifts for 12 days. if the powers that be had a "plan" when Minneapolis blew up. who in the command staff didnt say hey this could happen here in chicago we should have a plan in place. instead do everything half ass and now. "no overtime" was the motto for superintendent brown and the mayor. And lets not talk about covid-19. the department packs the buses with po's and no social distancing. they should have rdo's so the po's could recoup. how many officers were on their feet and moving from place to place with no were to eat or use a bathroom.
So Sad to hear it was an accident.
Very glad it wasn't something nefarious.
My deepest condolences to his family and colleagues.
how sad,
why is it that "....only the good die young...." ?
with prayers and thoughts
Prayers are sent Godspeed brother amen
Rest In Peace Brother
His wife is in critical but stable condition. Please keep her in your prayers. They have a 4yr old son and very little family here in the states The FOP has started a fund, please visit site to donate.
Also would like to to give a shout out to EAP,Entire Chaplains Unit, and FOP President John Catanzarra. They were the only ones who came to the 024 District to offer their condolences and support to the 1st watch officers. No Mayor or Superintendent. We all know where they stand. Classless.
This mistake is more common than one might realize. Push button start, quiet engine. I had to train myself to look at the car screen to me sure it's fully turned off. Others have stated they made the same mistake. We are used to the key, have to relearn from keyless start. Exhaustion is definitely a big issue also. Thanks to EAP, Chaplain Unit and FOP President John Catanzarra.
