Schools will not be charged for police during remote learning days, district says
With Chicago’s school police contract up for renewal this month, school officials revealed Thursday that schools won’t be paying for police officers during remote learning this coming school year.
Chicago Public Schools announced this week that it will start the school year remotely, as COVID-19 cases rise and as district surveys reveal that the vast majority of Black and Latino parents aren’t comfortable sending children back into school buildings. The earliest students could return would be Nov. 9.
A joint Chalkbeat Chicago and WBEZ investigation found that, even though school is only in session for 10 months of the year, the school district agreed to pay salary and benefits up to $152,000 per police officer and $172,000 per sergeant on 12-month contracts. [lol]
Now, with COVID-19 dramatically changing the landscape for schools, the district will again seek to modify its school police contract to reflect how often officers are or aren’t in school buildings.

Maybe in their current capacity but when I came on, Captains ran every watch & in my opinion it was necessary to have a defined leader. As it stands now, you have a Lt who's telling other Lt's what to do. Not an optimal situation. I know while I was still working, I'd have a hard time if another Sgt thought he was gonna tell me what to do.
So, the mayor buckles to the powerful leftist Chicago Teacher's Union who threatened a strike so their members can stay home in their jammies. I think that the mayor should open the school buildings and have the teachers report to their classrooms and conduct e-learning from there. If the teachers refuse, then lock up the buildings and lay off all of the support personnel and some of the teachers. But, this would be an ideal hybrid solution; let those kids that want in classroom learning come to class and those that want e-learning stay at home with lessons broadcasted from the classroom. I have no doubt that the leftist union leadership is putting pressure on the governor and mayor to shut private, catholic schools so as to not show up the unionists.

At one time, it was a very essential position within the department. Captain used to be by examination and a fairly honest process ( although there was some cheating and some buying of the rank) . A captain was the watch commander and had the power to run his watch the way he saw fit, often defying the political hack who was a district commander. When they took captains away, there were disputes between the lieutenants running the watches who often had the clout heavy lieutenant appointed as watch commander. I believe that Chicago is the only large city that had field lieutenants. Most cities have sergeants run the street operations and often senior sergeants run the watches. Chicago police department is patronage, cronyism and nepotism , always has been and it looks like it always will be.

Actually the rank of Captain has outlived it’s intended purpose which was to take care of any connected individuals who needed to be released or charged accordingly. Captain was a very politically connected rank which was given out to the truly connected, still is but not as necessary for the organization. They could be trusted to do the politically expedient right thing without being told to. While it was also a patronage position it also has benefits along with it that are nowhere memorialized in the GO’s. As with time all things live out their usefulness, to wit, the position of Captain.....

It's not exempt. They have a union, get overtime and take a normal furlough. The term "exempt" refer to a tax status that exempts from FLSA. There is general order about the position, you could read it or just keep making shit up.
