Houston Hiring
- Houston Police Chief Art Acevedo has a message for disgruntled or laid off officers from around the country amid the growing nationwide trend to defund the police: "Come to Houston."
The police chief told local news outlet KRIV-TV this week that his department is working on a new program to streamline the process for out-of-state officers to come and serve in Houston.
The new program reportedly could consist of a 10-week academy course, instead of the typical course that lasts six months.
"The people of Houston, they don't want less policing, they want better policing and well-trained police officers," Acevedo said as his department welcomed 44 new officers this week and look forward to the addition of 400 officers over the next several months.

If you make the jump to Texas check local and county taxes to maximize in pocket expenditures/savings. Sales tax is collected by local and state government, effectively having just over 8%. Brick and mortar stores and online sales collect sales tax. If you buy online here from Texas expect to pay sales tax, at least from Primary Arms, and maybe shipping. Ugh! COVID-19 shutdowns could affect tax revenues. Granted any place is better than this shit hole city/county/state.

I have recently retired, and I recommend that if your are close enough to retirement, stick it out and leave ASAP. You will not regret leaving early. If you have less than 5 years, find another career choice altogether. If you have more that 10 years on maybe try and go to another city. Not Dallas or Houston IMHO. These are the wrong times to be the Police in. No need to hang your head, just make another career choice. The defund movement is good enough reason alone. Plenty of departments in Lake, McHenry, Kane, DuPage and Will counties are testing and hiring now or will be in the near future. Most suburban departments have a lateral process and are looking for good experienced officers. Even if you just graduated the Academy or only have 1-2 years on the job, now is the time to give us a look.
Our pay is high, equipment and training are better than what you have now plus the residents and administrations support you and appreciate what you do for them. The grass is really greener on the other side of the fence!

Houston, Phoenix, and a whole bunch of other cites have actively recruited lateral candidates for years. Chicago never did, even when the climate was positive. Why????

I remember in '79-80, Houston had a big nationwide hiring push. I kick myself for not going then. No state income tax, 2nd Amendment freedom, great BBQ, what more could you want? Sure it's a little humid but it beats Shitcago. In fact, they will be passing by Shitcago as the 3rd largest city very soon! THAT is why they need 400 cops!
Chandler, Arizona is taking laterals , if you are going to jump anywhere , go there , great PD , plenty to do, solid benefits, free insurance , city funds your deferred comp, the list goes on
If you’re looking to work, stay out of Texas. I’d recommend Nevada or Georgia. If you’re looking to retire, Clear Water or Tampa in Florida. Quite a few of the regular posters to the Rant forum live in Florida. I think a couple live in TN also. I've seen this question asked before there but best to ask yourself. As far as Tennessee, I'd stay away from Nashville and Memphis (obviously). Eastern TN seems better than the west as a whole. Best of luck to you.

HPD officer here. No one particularly likes Art, but at least he hasn't given in to the absolute surrender nonsense that you guys do. The protesters bounced off of us. Art's extremely volatile, almost bipolar, when it comes to disciplinary issues, but he won't be around forever. Hopefully our next chief won't be a glory-hound crazy person (but it probably will be). Our union does a good job in moderating the leftist insanity, and our City Council is surprisingly reasonable for a bunch of Dems. Corruption is pretty low and not tolerated in the city. Racial tensions are honestly pretty tolerable, compared to other big cities. Overall, of the big cities, HPD is not a bad place to work, especially since you don't have to live in Houston itself.
Our DA, Kim Ogg, is a much bigger problem. She's got a hard-on for screwing officers and for letting crooks go. Soros money, I guess.

If you are looking for decent communities away from the DFW or Harris County Democrat crap, communities like Amarillo, Lubbock, Midland/Odessa, San Angelo and Wichita Falls are great communities with excellent schools and reasonable real estate. Plus, the citizens support law enforcement with a reverence you have not seen in your lifetime.
Smaller communities and Sheriff Departments are always looking for people. If you are chasing $$$, probably not your cupotea. But a slower lifestyle with time and opportunity and a decent climate, yup.

TOTALLY AGREE! We're starting so see libtards and need all the fine blue available. Suburbanites actually drop off treats to the station and usually greet LEOs with well deserved respect. We smile and say/wave hello. Defunding is not an option. Though it was discussed just to give it lip service.

Houston was one of the first cities I noticed having armed security guards in grocery stores and restaurants, and that was back in the mid-90s. It's only gotten worse since Katrina from what I've heard.
Acevedo is a far left radical piece of shit, but the department is pretty good and the support in Texas - even in the more liberal Houston - is still miles better than the anti support from Groot and her commie cronies.
Forget Houston & Florida. You really want that sun & humidity & crime? Idaho is the place to go. Coeur d'Alene is beautiful. Big city Boise isn't far if you need that. People are fine, cost of living decent, and yeah they have winter but for some reason it's more enjoyable there than here.

I live in Tennessee and avoid Nashville and Metro Police at all cost!
Nashville has a new 'rat mayor, is a 'rat controlled city and Metro has their hands tied to include new policing initiatives like civilian oversight, body cameras coming soon, etc.
The "hood rats" coming out of the few ghettos TN has and "funnin" in downtown Nashville to including car jacking and robberies.
The mayor has the bars still locked down and is dragging out re-opening Nashville. Musicians are "starving" in Nashville...
To the other guy asking about TN and FL locations to move to: TN is "red" (TRUMP 2020!!!), but Memphis, Nashville, Knoxville and Chattanooga are "blue cities" - rest of TN (especially rural areas) are red. Research the political party of the city/town mayor you are considering moving into.
