Knife Attacker Shot, Killed
- A man was shot and killed by Chicago police after allegedly lunging at a CPD sergeant with a knife Saturday in Vittum Park in Garfield Ridge.
Officers were called about 1:40 a.m. for reports of a person stabbed near 49th Street and Lavergne Avenue, according to a police source. When they arrived, they saw a man holding a “long, large butcher knife.” In a statement, Chicago police said the suspect stabbed an officer in the protective vest before officers used a stun gun on him.
The suspect dropped to his knees before removing the prongs and lunging at the female sergeant, the source said. Officers then shot the man multiple times, according to police. He was pronounced dead at the scene.
Step-by-step:
- Police responded to a stabbing - and found someone stabbed;
- Police found a man with a knife - who then stabbed an officer;
- Despite being confronted with DEADLY FORCE, responding officer(s) - for whatever reason - used a NON-DEADLY FORCE option;
- The Offender/Assailant removed the taser darts from his body and again ATTACKED a female sergeant;
- Police shot the Assialant
This appears to be "de-escalation" to the point of endangering Officers' lives, which is not a good practice, but you can bet someone is going to whine about it.

To say the Sgt and Officers involved did a fantastic job is the understatement of the century. It’s a miracle the Sgt is alive. Thank God!!!

Speaking of hero’s how about this one in 001. So I responded right out of roll call to a person shot in 001. I didn’t rush, trust me. A guy by the time I arrived gave three conflicting stories with a GSW to the leg. It was in an apartment complex. The officers, for some reason were searching the building for a possible offender. Zero info was given that would lead anyone to believe that an offender was still on scene but good ole 161 decided to take charge.. sort of. 161 wanted to do a full cavity search of a building for a guy shot in the leg who gave three conflicting stories. 161 decided to make this a SWAT incident with ZERO info that would even suggest an offender may be on scene. So, now the captain, commander, area deputy chief, all of swat and the street deputy need to come out along with the SORT car, command post and weapons bus because 161 wants to be the guy in charge. Guess what was found out by BLUE SHIRTS??? He shot himself. Simply relaxing, taking your time and using your head could have avoided a massive response by everyone for this guy to play supervisor. Swat was not needed at all even though their help was greatly appreciated but a full blown swat incident want needed. But 161 needed to be recognized. Well, it was all BS and the victim accidently shot himself in the leg. 161, embarrassed again but what do you expect from a boot licker probable merit sgt.

Fortunately for the police, the offender had already stabbed one person who was not a police officer. This will make it more difficult for the lamestream media to protest them as an innocent victim. It would be better for the officers if the first stabbing victim dies so that the police can argue that they shot a murder suspect rather than an agrevated assault suspect. It would have been even better for the police of the subject had stabbed and killed multiple victims property to being shot. Note to police officers everywhere, when confronted with an armed subject that is using deadly force against people, allow them to run up there body count before interfering.

Do these tasers work? Do they work on drug induced, criminal minded individuals in a fit of rage? Everytime I hear these stories it is either they don't work or they just flip them off like they are the Terminator. All those people so critical of the police, think for a second what they do: they get calls from parts of the city, have to de-escalate domestic situations, people always on edge, and everyone's blood is pumping, etc., You might be in a situation like this once or twice in your life where you break up a fight or something but cops expect to do it almost daily, sometimes multiple times during a shift, I can't imagine how physical, mentally, and spiritually draining your job must be. Can I ask you officers, what happens after an incident like this when you are placed on "administrative desk duty for 30 days while they review the case." Are you being punished by this move, is it a job everyone tries to avoid?
In that time period, I guess it depends on the case, (I'm not talking about some major case, just basically the taser, wrestling someone to the ground, or discharging a weapon) are you being interviewed by lawyers, how are you meant to feel? Does this go on your permanent record and does it make a difference? Just curious.

You’re probably correct. But it’s also possible(but unusual)that the media may have the details of the incident and feel that the offender was in the wrong. If that’s the case they won’t report his race if he’s black either. The media has to do their race and incident analysis before telling the story. Then they determine how to report it.

IMO - not from experience, this in Joe Public speaking - when cops do use excessive force it's over a minor offense or perceived offense, it's on someone other than a habitual criminal and it's either because they're stressed out or it's the 5% in any company who should be working somewhere else. My guess is that in the case of real criminals, cops know perp is going in for felony charges, the defense lawyers know the perp and street knowledge includes 7 different ways to file excessive force complaints, 80% of which are fake. Thus, real criminals get by-the-book handling.

I know there is alot of variation in police practices from small towns to major urban areas, but if this Rochester situation took place in Chicago, with the whole Coronavirus still a big unknown, how would a Chicago Police officer handled it? Was the mesh hoods something that was dispatched at the onset of Coronavirus or was it something you always have at your disposal? How could he die from asphixation if he can breath? That knife looks like something for commercial use so it probably had a sharp edge. In the photo it also appears to have belt-sander type serrations, good for getting through large cuts of meat. This was extremely dangerous to the officers. Using less than lethal means against the attempt of deadly force was against the policy of the department I was a part of. With the evidence that tasers do not work consistently as in the Blake case, one in Louisiana, and this one, hopefully officers will not entrust their lives to them when faced with an offender using deadly force. Tasers are a get tool, but they are not a tool to use when the officer is faced with deadly force.

Tasers only work reliably if you use fresh LPM in them monthly. Do not trust a battery more than 60 days old... PERIOD!!!
Taser brand LPMs no longer come with Surefire cells in them... they have since switched to cheap china made junk and are NOT RELIABLE!!!
Someone brought in a fluke multimeter and tested everyone's x26p a while back and found that over 1/2 of them had LPMs that were below spec and 45days old.
Axon sent all new LPMs, 1:5 of those were below spec as well.

NEVER use non lethal force against a lethal threat! Ever! A knife is lethal force, especially when the knife has recently been used to stab/ cut someone. By the time/ distance you can use a Taser, the Bad Guy is too close. Even if you get a good hit, the forward momentum of a running/ lunging knifeman means you can still get cut/ stabbed. A 6 foot man can lunge, from a stationary standing position about 9 feet: the length of his body ( 6 feet) plus the length of his knife arm ( about 3 feet). Once you are faced with lethal force, you CANNOT de escalate your way out of it. When facing a non lethal threat, keep your distance and de escalate all you can— but NOT when facing a knife!

As far as the question "Was 7 shots to the back reasonable?" You shoot to stop the threat. In other words if he is still doing whatever caused you to shoot in the first place, you keep shooting. That used to be the standard.
However JVD shot an armed man after he made a sudden move. He never dropped the knife, a knife he had stabbed a tire with earlier so everyone knew it was real. I never understood all the outrage. JVD told McD to drop it, He didn't. JVD started shooting, McD did not drop the knife. Either he was resisting a lawful order or he was dead. Everyone freaked out about the number of shots, I thought that was bullshit. You shoot to stop the threat, McD was still a threat.
Had Rham not hidden the tape and had JVD been granted a change of venue he might have beat the charges.
Now all bets are off. The "reasonable man" doesn't work when the average person is an idiot who believes whatever the media tells them.

You’re probably correct. But it’s also possible(but unusual)that the media may have the details of the incident and feel that the offender was in the wrong. If that’s the case they won’t report his race if he’s black either. The media has to do their race and incident analysis before telling the story. Then they determine how to report it.
Offender was black. Sgt is white so of course the media won’t mention it.
The body cam video should be shown on national television so people can see how extremely dangerous a person with a knife is.
