No West Side Casino?

Instead of turning down what was obviously the worst location for a casino, the Cubs provide a way for Groot to back out:

  • The Chicago Cubs are stepping to the plate with a development plan for a long-vacant site in Lawndale that was the centerpiece of a political scandal in the 1990s.

The team’s charitable arm is interested in putting a baseball-oriented training center for youths on a roughly 21-acre site at Roosevelt Road and Kostner Avenue. Team spokesman Julian Green said the Cubs this week will submit a proposal to the city, which owns the property.

We recall this being described as a dumping ground for the Dan Ryan reconstruction debris in the 1990's. A few 011 District cops we met described it as a fifty foot high mountain of concrete boulders the size of refrigerators covering a few full city blocks. The EPA may even have declared it a Superfund site at one point.

Perhaps now, Groot can give proper consideration to either a McCormick Place casino or something on Northerly Island.

Oh yes, let's put a casino in the middle of the ghetto. That should work out just fabulously for the 30 dead tourists that are stupid enough to show up to get robbed by these predators. Then, the word will get out and no one but local public aid recipients and drug dealing high rollers with their violent tendencies will kill the casino. Is there ANY intelligent life here?

Legalized drugs won't save Chicago. Neither will a casino.

The country is saturated with casinos. Even Atlantic city is a ghost town. Too many casinos that can't compete with each other or slots at the local bar.

Chicago is dying.

it was alot higher and bigger than you describe. back then i worked for the shitty and bounced down west roosevelt in equiptment almost ever day and watched that mountain rise. at the time polution in general and fly dumping in the community was a hot topic. being in the trades i often wondered how they were getting away with that, there were no signs or anything that made it look legit. alderdork henry was railing against it at monthly meetings blameing the white devil on the fifth floor. during the fbi silver shovel expose it came out ole boy henry was getting 15.00 a load, typical hypocritical ghetto democrat. he died before he could vacation at club fed. fun fact : that wasnt the only one, walsh and kenny were dumping all over the southside including one just northeast of the kedzie bridge over the beltline tracks east of nabisco and one east of cicero and 71 st. the city paid twice to haul a couple million tons of debris from the ryan rebuild. water dept commissioner went to jail for bribery on that one too. somebody remind me........why isnt that criminal daley in prison ? he paid his buddies to haul that shit to the dump at great expense, instead they dumped ski hills of it in the ghetto, gave him millions in donations, and as a lawyer and former prosecuter din no nuffins ? you young guys missed it, it was fuckin epic hahaha.

This area, bounded by Roosevelt, Kostner, Fifth Avenue and Kildare was affectionately known as “Mount Fillmore”.

It served as the ultimate “hole”: naps, firearms range, impromptu gin mill and rendezvous point for meeting “extracurricular paramours” were just a few of the benefits reaped by third and first watch personnel, complements of the crooked-assed politicians snared by “Operation Silver Shovel”.

I can’t believe three-plus decades have already passed. G-damn, I miss the good ol’ days.

I'm not much into pod casts but at a wake while recalling the good old days, someone mentioned the mountain. Yeah we get boring as we get old.

Someone mentioned the pod cast "The City".

10 episodes explained the story from start to finish, mentioned all the companies and politicians involved.

Listened to it on Sundays while driving to Kenosha to screw fat ass out of gas tax.

Made the trip much more pleasant.

"The Chicago Cubs are stepping to the plate with a development plan for a long-vacant site in Lawndale that was the centerpiece of a political scandal in the 1990s."

I think the figure was that 1 in 100,000 "community center" neighborhood basketball players will actually get on the NBA and cut a multi-million-dollar path for themselves; the rest are showing great moves and getting lots of exercise.

Sports, the military, politics, and opening your own church can only take so many people so far.

Industrial production is what creates wealth - and we have lost so much of ours. "Restaurants and consumer spending" are the basis of the whole economy today; it used to be that eating and buying stuff was made possible by wages earned at PRODUCTION - the metal stamping places on Lake St., on Cicero, on Western Ave. going like hell, the smell of that hot sulfurized cutting oil and the BANGBANGBANG of all those punch presses coming out the open windows on a summer night until the neighborhood kids didn't like to walk past because of the racket...

That used to be Dad in there paying for the house - and their older brother just graduated high school and got started there too..

Today?

There's your problem.

Why does everyone think a casino solves problems? Casinos create problems. The money they generate is at the expense of those duped into gambling. Taxpayers then end up bailing those people out. They will sell the $400 LINK card for $200 cash and then gamble it away. And then carjack you.

Until there is welfare/public aid reform and unemployment <1%, it is irresponsible to build casinos that only make the rich politicians and their connected friends richer.

Remember this: A casino (or a lottery) doesn't create wealth. Seriously. It does not increase the size of the "pie." All it does is make one slice larger and another slice smaller. A casino only redistributes wealth.

On the other hand, manufacturing jobs where you take raw materials and add labor? That creates wealth. It increases the size of the pie.

In like manner, government does not create wealth, either. Politicians forcibly remove wealth from those that have it and put it somewhere else. They don't make the pie any bigger. Maybe that explains why they're clueless about what it takes to actually create wealth. Maybe that's why mfgrs are leaving IL.

Along that same line, unions don't increase wealth, either. Blunt truth. Their wage and pension efforts don't really make the pie any bigger. Somebody's piece gets larger; somebody else's piece gets smaller.

Wealth creation means creating something that is more than the sum of its parts. In Chicago, it means scamming money from the taxpayer and putting it in someone else's pockets.

I'm fine with it being in the ghetto. Moving the Casino will just force the ghetto residents/super predators/urban youths to travel to the site at McCormick or wherever to rob and murder the patrons. A casino just means more crime for the city and more taxes stolen by these corrupt politicians. It won't fund your pensions or back pay.

Lonndale has been in continuous urban renewal ever since ‘68. Always room for improvements, including a new polices academy to the north in Garfields’s toxic dumping ground.
A west side casino there was never going to happen, no investor group was signing up to lose before they broke ground and hand 40% off the top to the corrupt city and state. Anyway, the shuttered McPier & MacCormick’s are both destined for a $1 liquidation sale pending JB’s abrupt retirement.

The Cubs West Side Grounds - West Side Park circa 1885-1915.
(If they build it, they will come. If they shoot, watch them run.)

Cheap land is hard to come by, just ask TIF beneficiary Sterling’s Bay Lincoln Yards.
For the Cubs, It’s a write-off.
Daylight little league, maybe some midnight basketball, all seasonal and offer little for the developer - unless City gets to pick subs. But where are they going to re-dump all that dumped toxic waste? Won’t be cheap so that land is worth less than it’s weight in tainted dirt. Only Sterling Bay Lincoln Yards can make money on EPA detoxification using city upfront colonization money.

Larri is having a crisis right now. She’s thisclose to being turned over to the nervous hospital. Cubs need a way to cut 2021 losses and charity always is a solid place to drop reportable income.

– if 011 ever had a dogpatch (014) that boundary in 011 sure was unique. I was dumped into new fillmo Harrison after academy, this life long northsider trying to learnt the new skreet names. One that stuck was Fifth Avenue. Thought I was being bullshitted when doe told me ‘he stayed on Fifth Avenue’. My only relocation of that street name was in Midtown Manhattan NYC and the name of a janky candy bar. Wonder what the City Planners had in mind when they named that 1 mile stretch. 001 Dist.
On top of a junkyard on top of the ancient
bottom of Lake Chicago/Lake Michigan which means
all that toxic grease/solvent which has percolated
through the ground which explains why the building
is pulling itself apart from the foundation up.

H.Q.
Old dump/junkyard, the same thing as 001.

"New CPD Academy" Chicago/Kostner & Tripp/Ferdinand.
Old but not forgotten industrial site.

Harrison Park. 18th & Damen.
Dump/Junkyard. Former 19th century stone quarry?

(The old man taking us with to Bishop's Chili

U.S. Steel South Works Site.
All kinds of pie-in-the-sky projections
that went over like a Lead Zeppelin because
NOBODY wants to be on the hook for the Chicago
version of Love Canal if residential housing is
ever to be plunked down on top of that nasty piece.

They would have to excavate and haul to an unholy depth.

And of course that would be below the water table.

>Lake Michigan filling the hole... Rapidly<

And much much more...

Speculators, middle-men and Lick-Hitters
all shanking the shit out of each other
trying to get money and GTFO before anybody
gets wise to what's really happening.

Heh... Seeing the lot of them laid out with stupid grins
on their faces, their dicks in the dirt and sharpened
spoons protruding from between their shoulder blades
would actually make for some timely comic relief.

As was mentioned about a month ago by an SCC Commentator... What about Gambling Cruise Ships docked in Chicago and cruising Lake Michigan? This could be done under State of Illinois Jurisdiction (Regulatory and Tax).

“ Puts slot machines in both airports. When we get our lives back, it will make money. Downtown isn’t safe at night. .. or during the day much either.@12/23/2020 04:44:00 PM

– Slots machines would sure get a work out, but the rent/lease for floor space plus occupant limits wouldn't make this feasible. I believe it was proposed in 2015 or so in a future (now ongoing) Terminal expansion.
Any slots gambling at the airports would require a bevy of federal approvals. Big money doesn’t want to break even being not only overtaxed but over paying for space. Heck, the Post Office even moved out of O’Hare. ShortShanks wanted the City be to the owner of the casino/gambling license, imagine that. They can’t even provide for homeowners with revenues form O’Hare when times were good.
Good money returns are hard to find, if we (pensions) could invest just a portion in just one or two of the deals this city subsidizes with bids, TIF’s and infrastructure grants, it would pay dividends that only Warren Buffet could match.

A "U Haul " hub considering all the movement out of Illinois and Chicago would make better use of the space
