We Don't Need No Stinkin' Proficiency

It's getting long past time to dynamite the CPS system. This was sent to us by an outraged former academician:

  • Juarez Familia,

The purpose of this message is to communicate an important next phase in our CBE journey. As we become more acutely aware of the ways in which the pandemic continues to exacerbate inequities, we must take a bold stance that aligns with our BJCA aim and reflects the urgency that equity work requires. CBE is founded in the belief that equity is a moral imperative and we can no longer ignore policy and structures that perpetuate educational inequities.

We continue to have an opportunity through CBE, to rethink, recreate and reimagine teaching and learning. For us, this means not only dismantling inequitable practices but dismantling the system in which these practices live and thrive. There is no more inequitable practice than academic tracking. Tracking is perpetuated by white supremacy culture and only serves to sort and rank students. It is a practice that is doing harm to students. Here at Juarez, we sort students into IB, Regular, AP, Honors, CTE. Whatever name we give it, it all comes down to the fact that students are labeled as above average, average and below average, all labels that reinforce perceived worth and potential. The academic level of the student then determines his /her classes which has implications on rigor, teacher planning and expectations, assessment, pacing, opportunity, mindset, the list goes on and on. We, therefore, are moving away from tracking as a school and explicitly calling it out as anti-racist policy decision. Our plan is to engage staff in a de-tracking conversation and to define concrete next steps for our school community. .[...]

    Juan Carlos Ocon

Principal - Benito Juarez Community Academy

So in essence, grading students is.....you guessed it.....racist!

God forbid you demonstrate any sort of proficiency in reading, writing or arithmetic. After all, it's not like there's going to be a job waiting for you at the end of your educational career.

Maybe that's why the Slum Times is turning on the CTU?

So next question is, will they then put below average or average students in the same class (other than gym & lunch) with someone performing at an honor level? How’s that going to work? I thought the whole point of sorting students was so that they had a chance at performing well in classes that taught at their level of comprehension?

So at the end of their "education" at Juarez, students will receive a certificate for, "breathing while in a classroom"?

That's great!

Isn't there some sort of state test all Illinois students have to pass, or is that just to move on from 8th grade?

And what about moving on in their education? Do colleges no longer require a GPA for admission? Will Juarez be rubber-stamping "4.0" on all student records? What about the ACT or SAT? How will this prepare students for those tests?

This is a HUGE disservice to their students who intend to move on to college, because a fake GPA and an "education" of unmeasured proficiency will likely guarantee that most of these students will wash out. Is Juarez merely a holding place for students destined to go to trade school?

It's okay I guess. McDonald's will be paying $20/hour by the time these kids graduate. If they have enough tattoos and piercings, Starbucks will snap them right up...well, they'll have to compete with the college grads holding dead-end degrees who are looking for work.

“The competency-based education (CBE) approach allows students to advance based on their ability to master a skill or competency at their own pace regardless of environment.”

So if it takes them 8 years to graduate from high school how can you measure if they are qualified to be hired for a job. If they are hired for job will it take them longer to master the job. Is this fair to the employer. If they can’t meet simple public school standards maybe they should be examined for mental handicaps.

Why can the private and parochial be in session when the public schools can’t?

They're not saying the grading is racist. They're saying that placing students in classes that they'll actually be able to perform better in, is racist. Certain students, regardless of race, are smarter than other students. These students are placed in different "levels" of classes, because they can't all possibly be taught the same material and be expected to perform even close to satisfactorily. You can't have a catchall class that works for everyone. You're going to be teaching past someone's skill level or dumbing it down for the more advanced students. Not sure how they're planning on executing this without hurting their students or just not spelling out that the classes are different levels. Either way, there's nothing racist about it, and clearly nothing related to white supremacy specifically. But the white people will always be the bad ones, always the racists. How many white students at Juarez? I'm guessing it's a low enough number that the school community can be referred to as "Juarez Familia" without any complaints. It seems racist to use "Juarez Familia" for a school made up of teachers and students and "familias" of various races and ethnicities. But they somehow don't see the racism in their attempt to call out nonexistent racism. As long as they keep repeating the same old lie that white people are all racists, everything will work out just fine. Reality is just too real for them.

How do you think public housing recipients get picked? They get graded. A college educated, probably minority public employee making $100,000 or more, sorts through the applications and cherry picks the "best ones" to go to the front of the line. Happens every day. You don't get involved, not until the violent male offspring descend upon their neighbors. Then you get the call. Remember to handle everyone with the same respect, they have been chosen.

Jordan Peterson addresses this in his book, "12 Rules For Life". The neo-Marxists refuse to accept that the person holding them back from achieving their goals is the person looking back at them in the mirror. Instead, they blame everyone else, including any kind of ranking system (grades in school in this case). Instead of ensuring an equal OPPORTUNITY for all and let individuals earn rewards by demonstrating competence, they believe everyone should have an equal OUTCOME. Big difference between the two philosophies. The book has helped me understand how these people think.

Tracking isn't racist. Tracking puts students into groups by ability to allow educators to focus on the needs of each kid. Otherwise, more advanced kids get bored and kids who fall behind get frustrated. Something, something idle hands. Whatever. Tracking meant to offer a path (or track) to success for every kid based on demonstrated ability. The math whiz who was afraid to get his hands dirty would make a better engineer than surgeon, right? And there's a kid better suited for diving in and repairing/maintaining the engines for test runs.

Then we stigmatized the hell out of the trades. The working men who built this country got presented as inferior. Tracking got a bad name when parents first heard their special angels were off to a trade school instead of the ivy league. Despite the fact that their kid might make a better electrician, they told the kids the ONLY path (or track) to success was college.

Imagine a time when a career path (or track) got so flooded with like minded youths who made the exact same decisions. Imagine a time where young men and women with multiple degrees and decades of schooling couldn't find work. Ask yourself if an academic administrator doesn't know the last century or so of academic administration. Then ask yourself if this administrator could've once had someone give him that "no son of mine" line about skilled trades. Might that make someone commit to all those degrees, a life in academia, and a view that anyone who works for a living is beneath him? Sorry for the rant. I'm tired.

Teachers are a critical step in instilling a thirst for knowledge into their students. This is done by challenging students to perform things they think they are incapable of performing, to instill a desire to improve oneself. What kind of a teacher would want to preside over a group of kids who have no desire to learn or better themselves.

The public education process in the United States, for the most part, bankrupt. Students in USA rank way down the list in learning as compared to countries around the world. Teachers do not want to be judged on their performance and schools have become pass through buildings. Homework is pretty much out of the window and Summer school for failing courses has been shortened so that it is meaningless. I know I started to screw off, but the fear of failing and spending a Summer day in class, the fear of the nuns and teaching Christian Brothers and the fear of disappointing my parents who gave up everything for my education, put me on the right path. Now, I have a fear of the dumbing down of institutions and professions just to accommodate students who the leftist teacher's unions believes are being discriminated against by asking them to study and read.

Worked with a graduate of Benito Juarez Academy—reading skills were well below level. I suggested that he decode the word using syllables. He asked, “What are syllables?”Then, I asked that he add three fractions using least common multiple (fifth grade level). Couldn’t do this because he never memorized multiplication/division facts.

So, Mr. Ocon, vowels, consonants, and multiplication facts are not racist. They are essential components in a student’s education. The concept is mastery learning. These skills build logic and critical thinking skills that are essential to a student’s education. In fact, another student remarked that bilingual education in grammar and high school left her unprepared for college level work.

In education, waving the flag of racism may be popular today but it does nothing to address the deficits in some of today’s students.

A start would be to remove calculators from grades one through eight. Next, teach students in English only classes. Aim for mastery learning. Teach phonics, decoding skills, and math so that students will be prepared for college-level work if they choose that path.

So-called "equity," as that term is being re-defined, will be self-limiting. Here is a brief example from the Chicago Public Schools "Equity Toolbox" website:

"Racial Equity requires processes, initiatives, and outcomes that eliminates all forms of racial oppression and co-creates conditions that enable those most impacted by structural inequity to reach their full potential centering their agency."

https://equity.cps.edu/equity-framework/equity-in-cps/racial-equity

I didn't make this up. That's Chicago Public Schools' "finest" putting on their best public face. Set aside the grammar errors, work through the statement, and try to understand what they're communicating. At the end you will only be able to guess what they're talking about because NOTHING is really being communicated here except the idiocy, illiteracy, and pomposity of the authors. THEY don't even know what they're saying - it's good enough for them that it all just "sounds" good (to them and others like them, anyway). Eventually, when real work needs to get done, everyone will see that the tyrant king pretenders have no clothes.

Now if you'll excuse me, I need to go center my agency for a little while ...

The catch-22 they've got you by is that if, being a good person, you believe that intelligence and academic success have nothing to do with race, and yet academically successful students are overwhelmingly concentrated in only a few races, then that strongly suggests racism and racial discrimination in the system. So academic leftists are very cleverly using your own virtue to hang you.

Seems like it to me.

Shoving these kids through school with a worthless primary/secondary education is setting them up for failure.
I guess this is all part of the democratic cradle to grave initiative.

If there is no more performance tracking then it is time (past time) to cut teacher salaries.
in fact, fewer teachers are needed.
When they are back in classrooms fill each room with a teachers aid and video
broadcast the lessons. The aides have books of pre-published FAQS to answer the kids questions.
Each school needs only a single teacher for each subject.

Save billions in taxpayer dollars with the same educational outcome.

True story—
Decided to submit my papers for retirement after an irate parent demanded to know why I was keeping her son from the honor roll. I explained that it’s not me; it’s his test scores. Showed her four tests with F letter grades.

Explained that we were solving equations to find the value of x. Parent replied, “Can’t you let him use a calculator?” I explained that these were two- step problems and no other students used calculators just paper and pencil. The work involved estimating, problem-solving, and logic.

She stormed out of the room and complained to the principal after I pointed to my head and said we all use this calculator.

They look at you confused if your order is $23.67 and you hand them $54.17 lol they try handing you back the $4.17 and innocently say it's only $23.67 and disheartenedly, I have to reply, yes, I know and I expect to get back $30.50 in change... basic math is a lost concept
*for those who think I'm an ass, I'll break it down for you too. This has happened bill: $5.26 I present $10.01 they hand me my penny back I tell them No, I want three (3) quarters back with my change and not .74 cents and four singles

Soon, people are going to start fighting back against these WOKEtards. I just don't know any WOKEtards, personally.
The last time that I saw a WOKEtard in a bar was 1990, when Vietnam veteran and Steelworker, Joe Ball, scalped a hippie with his bare hands in "A Touch of Green" bar on 63rd street after a disagreement about Vietnam. Joe was normally a very likeable guy but that brilliant hippie pushed it. Joe placed his work boot on the hippie's neck and yanked his ponytail off, skin and all, then tacked it to a corkboard on the wall. It was gruesome, yet, very funny. Joe certainly won THAT argument. I, of course, scolded Joe, then we bought him drinks and drove him home to his lovely wife, as usual. The hippie left and probably went hat shopping. I think of Joe every time I see a WOKEtard in a manbun.

You say that like trade school is for people who couldn't hack it in college... kind of a slap in the face to electricians, welders, mechanics, plumbers, pharmacists, you know, all those people who have a skilled trade that let's the modern world function. These people won't be contributing like them. They will be small business owners, learning the metric system, and unlicensed pharmacists.

You are a strange bird. Get a fucking jar and throw your change in it. Don't expect the morons of society to do extra math to figure out what combination of coins and bills you want to end up with. I'd make sure you got nothing but singles and nickels for being annoying and holding up the line. I can't even think of 3 things I paid cash for in the last year. Evolve, gramps. No one cares which coins they have. Just get a bigger coin purse if you have too many pennies. Stop using store cashiers as a currency exchange, you annoying weirdo.

That school is one scandal after another--attendance rigging, teachers who can't keep their hands off students, security guard dealing drugs in the parking lot while also having a relationship with a student. That type of environment begins and ends with the principal who's been installed there for almost 20 yrs, he is on his fourth contract. Also lots of racist teachers who hate themselves because they're white so fully support these crazy things but then again they're making $90,000 to sit on their asses and do shit. Guilty conscience for taking money. Guessing these goofs don't grade either.

Oh I know EXACTLY what you mean. The best part is, almost everyplace has electronic cash registers that, when you enter the correct amount tendered, tell you how much change to give. It requires nothing of the cashier except to enter the amount tendered.

When I attempt what you speak of, I verbally tell the cashier how much I'm tendering.

Seriously, about half the time they enter the wrong amount, and give me the wrong amount of change.

$15/hour? Why not?

Let's take this a couple of steps further.

Surely there are people who really like football, but can't play to save their lives. Why should professional sports only cater to the most talented?

How about music? Why should only people who are great vocalists be the only ones who get recording contracts? Why can't I, as a person who shouldn't sing anywhere but the shower, be able to follow my dream of being heard on the radio?

And what about teaching? Why should we limit our children to being educated by people holding high-falutin' MASTERS degrees? If you love teaching, why should you be pigeon-holed if you don't have a degree?

If you don't have grades for the children how can you say the teachers are neglecting their education amd doing a poor job?

Watch the assault on school vouchers and private schools to escalate.

To the person who wrote this: Yes. Agreed. Thank you for your comment. My experience teaching Senn HS aligns with this experience perfectly. But the momentum in education is bilingual (so none of the kids who arrive speaking only Spanish will make any improvement in English by the time they leave unless they are extremely keen to improve themselves) and the teachers, even those who are not woke nuts, are too burned out by CPS requirements, evaluations by APs to turn to help that one student who is falling behind. The machine grind doesn't help students learn. It's a big, roiling mess. But you hit the nail on the head.

Ow! I saw a lady get her weave ripped out in a fight off of Vincennes Ave., around the same time as that incident, maybe 1990. Also gruesome, and did she howl. It sounded like someone tearing a bolt of cloth ... yecch

But otherwise you're right. He hit them all.

No, I didn't mean that at all. My sincere apologies! Trade schools are obviously one route for children to take, and a good one because those jobs can't be exported. I just meant that trade schools shouldn't be the ONLY route for children to take. They should at least have the option.

Again, I'm sorry that I gave the impression that trade schools weren't any good.
