At the end of our opinion in Lindstrom v. Graber, 203 F.3d 470 (7th Cir.2000), we directed Assistant U.S. Attorney Lori Lightfoot to show cause why she should not be disciplined for conduct unbecoming a member of the bar of this court. Fed.R.App.P. 46(c). She responded by submitting a brief and a number of supporting documents, including testimonials to her character from lawyers whom she has appeared opposite to in court, and the Department of Justice submitted an amicus curiae brief in her support. At her request we held an oral hearing at which she, her lawyer, and the U.S. Attorney for the Northern District of Illinois presented argument to us and answered our questions.
The entire opinion ends thusly (go read it all):
- We are troubled, finally, by the U.S. Attorney's request that we “depublish” our previous decision. Even if we agreed with him, as we do not, that attorney Lightfoot should not be disciplined, he has presented no reasons for supposing that our decision contained any error. We did not say that Lightfoot had engaged in conduct unbecoming a member of the bar, but only that there was a sufficient likelihood of this to require a disciplinary proceeding; and nothing in the U.S. Attorney's submission suggests that this “probable cause” finding was erroneous. The request to vacate our decision, which we of course deny, suggests to us that the U.S. Attorney still does not appreciate the gravity of the situation demonstrated by the uncontested facts, which reveal that the Justice Department's failure to equip its attorneys with the necessary expertise to opine on difficult issues relating to extradition precipitated the filing of a misleading motion by the Department that caused this court to lose jurisdiction over an appeal by a person who claims that he had been ordered extradited in violation of law.
Seems Groot has a somewhat shaky relationship with the truth.

One group (the smallest) has no regard for the well being of society our others, and will act so regardless of potential consequences.
The second group, the largest, is in the middle, on the fence, but basically peaceful sheep, willing to benefit society but also preferring a life devoid of conflict, even at there own expense.
The third group believes that society only functions when the laws set to are followed by all and the freedoms bestowed are not to be infringed by any. When they are not, there should be meaningful consequence.
When the office holders act no better than the fist group, God help them when the third group has had enough.

A lawyer can be disciplined for bad conduct, even when that conduct was not part of a legal proceeding. In other words, when she told a bold-faced lie about not knowing about the video, and later created the lie, she violated the Model Rules. She lied about a matter of magnificent public concern and knew she was lying. When caught she blamed others and demanded the resignation of a patsy. She has no business being part of the Illinois BAR.
Judge Posner's 2000 order included this statement, ". . . we do not think a severe sanction, such as suspension or disbarment from the bar of this court, or a recommendation to Illinois's Attorney Registration and Disciplinary Committee for disciplinary action, is warranted. That was certainly true 2400 years ago, but based on an honest assessment of our experience in the last 60 years, it should be amended to say:
The consequence of letting your inferiors participate in politics is being ruled by them.
When your inferiors now have a majority of votes, and even control the election process, your participation no longer matters.
What conduct of her's was unbecoming or warranting discipline? What did she do or not do? What, pray tell, was at issue?
How convenient for her, that the riots started for her a few days later. Nice distraction to sweep this under the rug.
