Personnel Question (UPDATE)

The blog has been pointing out massive shortages at the District level and the theft of manpower to supply these CST teams that aren't doing a damn thing about the near-constant backlogs burning out cops citywide.

We also wrote about Groot's soft "defunding" via a budget cut of 600 unfilled positions. This was while the Department was close to 1,000 officers short of the staffing of four years ago.

Then, a few days ago:

  • Wait until Jan 16th, we will be 2,023 officers shorter on that day due to retirements. This is the single largest retirement in CPD history. You not only have the guys with the 30 years but now the numbers leaving in the 100’s are down to 10 years. I work at the Jive-ory Tower and it’s chaos. Brown is disinterested because he’s gone soon back to Texas and Carter is just to stupid to understand. At least the young kids trapped in patrol are exploring massive lateral moves or just leaving for the private sector. We could conceivably have manpower dwindle under 5,000 and no help in sight. Another summer like last year the whole city could burn.

We don't know where this "2,023" number came from and if it included the 1,000 the Department was already short. We have observed many more people leaving with 20 years rather than 25 or 29. We've also seen new officers leaving for other agencies at a record pace.

To retire with the insurance under the 55-and-out provision, you have to notify the city of your intent to retire by 01 October of the year previous. So if you intended on retiring in 2021, you should have notified the city by 01 October 2020 to get the full benefits of the 55-and-out. [corrected info]

A typical year is 400 Officers....+/- a couple dozen. We've heard three separate numbers in the past two weeks.

  • 800 - 2 times the norm
  • 1,000 - 2.5 times the norm
  • 1,200 - 3 times the norm

Any of these numbers would spell trouble beyond anything the Department has seen in living memory.

UPDATE: The 2,023 appears to be the number of officers who could go tomorrow - as in twenty years of service (pension eligible) AND 50 years of age. We've still got people tracking down this number and trying to figure out how many people have already declared their intent to leave.

Jive-ory tower is the best name to give 35th street. With the bosses there giving new spots just because they belong to a special fraternity, the name is very well fitting. You jive turkey! 👐

This was just a rumor from some guy who was running numbers. The number 2023 is the amount of people in the department who are over the age of 50. Many of these people.. if not 90 percent still have 2-3 years until they are 55 or longer until they get to 29 and a day. So what they really were saying, is in theory 2023 COULD retire now. This rumor got legs a few weeks ago. Untrue, we are not losing that amount.

This is absolutely happening. Not sure about the numbers but it’s massive. Doomsday is coming for the CPD. I can’t believe the aldermen aren’t screaming about this looming danger. The numbers of young newly trained officers leaving is also massive. Lightfoot is crushing the department and putting the safety of it’s citizens at risk. There will be a huge recruiting problem to come. Law enforcement has become very unattractive and working for Chicago even more so. New kids are watching and listening to Lightfoot and it’s a huge turnoff. 4 years no contract and forced residency why would anyone want that when no other departments do that. Almost all other departments have lateral transfers to survive. Chicago doesn’t and they can’t with residency. No one will put up with residency. It’s very antiquated.

I do know that it’s a very large number going in January. Human Resources is overwhelmed right now. Cops are retiring early because the politicians have destroyed the job. It’s too risky with a hating mayor. I also know that there’s an unprecedented amount of cops leaving with under 7 years to lateral to other departments. Chicago is losing big on this because tax money trains them and certifies them. The department they lateral to reaps the benefits by not spending money on training and certifying. The number one reason they’re leaving is residency followed by being treated like garbage. Other departments don’t do that to their police officers. So how the hell is Chicago going to attract candidates?

I’m up north and we’ve had guys and girls <10 years, between 10-20 just walk away and many walking at 20 years. Few laterals. Not many waiting for the 55 with insurance. Many planning on bailing at 20 well under the age of 50 to collect. They just figure they’ll find something else till they can collect. LL has succeeded in destroying a major metropolitan city. Congrats. Should call her the wrecking ball.

We are WAY too top heavy and need to cut the fat off the top.
The amount of officers “working” at HQ & the academy is
RIDICULOUS !!! Resources need to be much better allocated.

But we all know that the groot really doesn’t give a shit about homicides,
businesses, crime or anything just as long as it doesn’t negatively impact her

This is occurring in the NYPD. Caught a segment on the Ben Shapiro radio show WLS 890 today where he was interviewing Dr. Quanta Ahmed MD (she is a very conservative pulmonologist who comments on current political affairs on Fox News). She is pro police. She treats NYPD officers and is very concerned as she said she has never seen morale this low. She said the officers are depressed over the lack of the city government supporting them, the public turning against them, crime rising and out of control. A lot of them are just retiring earlier and some are just quitting.

This is the havoc that the Democrat Party has brought all over the country to our major cities.

Sounds like that commenters numbers jive with including the 1,000 short already, plus 1,000 retirements would make about the 2,023 number.

Also, that aligns with the rumored disbanding of tact teams.
That would help man the beats in the districts while short, and also basically stop most of the aggressive proactive street-level policework.
Which seems what the city wants.
They don’t want car chases, foot chases, or officer involved shootings- and majority of those things come from tact.

No matter what happens, the future doesn’t look too bright on this department.
Be safe and watch out for each other out here.

The goal IS to have police leave.

Look at the cities run by Soros leftists (Mayors, DA's, Chiefs). They're pushing "defund the police" movements, wholesale release of violent criminals, policies that have any LE demoralized beyond belief and looking for any exit.

Both Soros and the PRC are actively trying to destroy America as we knew it. We're now in the midst of a blatant coup. BLM was started by avowed Marxists. Media and achools indoctrinate Marxist thought and push anti-American agendas. We saw it on display in the 60's, but it's been around longer. McCarthy was right.

PRC can become the defacto world leader as America fractures without firing a shot. So much cheaper to buy off or blackmail politicians and judges and have schools churning out millions of monolithic, blinded, useful idiots.

If you love your country, consider staying on, staying fetal and not following orders to arrest law-abiding citizens for whatever offenses a Biden admnistration may dream up.

This is more than fighting city hall. This is fighting for the survival of the country. Figure out where you can do the most good and make that your mission.

History may record the most massive cas of bribery abd extortion of public "servants" in history. This has been going on much longer than Trump has been in office:

https://pbs.twimg.com/media/EpgFAJfUYAESWEx?format=jpg&name=900x900

Add in the Soros and University mobs and the problem becomes more complex. Corrupt individuals do not care where the money comes from, or who might hold incriminating photos or videos (Epstein et al). They've sold their souls long ago. Look in any bureaucracy or corporation or political party.

The good news is tens if not hundreds of millions of Americans are waking up and rightfully livid. The unprecedented election night chicanery shocked many into reality. If you can do good by staying, do so. If not, leave. Record and report those contributing to the institutionalized rot wherever it is found. Much as this blog has done.

Generations past fought for this country for our benefit. Now it is our turn to do so for future generations.

Dozens Of Fed-Pp NYPD Cops Leave For Long Island Departments

The approximately 50 now-former Finest, many of whom had less than five years on the job, have jumped ship since Friday even though it meant taking a pay cut in the short term, law enforcement sources said.

“They are going to a department where they will be better appreciated by their community, local politicians and district attorneys who still value the job they do protecting innocent people and property over criminals,” said one source, explaining the tradeoff.

I agree but I believe the numbers taking the test are even lower and I’m hearing when offered the job people are no shows. Remember, the last test was before Lightfoot took over and the hate police move wasn’t like it is now. I do believe lateral transfers would help but you can’t have forced residency to do it. In fact lifting residency would probably attract suburban kids.

If Lightfoot wants a “better” younger police department the easiest way to do this is the following...

1.Drop the 55yr health insurance to 50 or 52. Lots of Cops with 20 years will go. Guaranteed!
2.Offer a buyout on the pension or a buy in to leave. Like the county guys got.
3.Increase starting pay. Compete with suburbs for pay. Be higher.
4.Lift residency and offer laterals and Chicago will get much larger numbers to apply.
5.Fix the pension fund. It’s not helping recruiting.
6.Tone down the rhetoric and give the police a contract. Other departments don’t have this issue.

Do these things and she will get the fresh young department she wants.

And that vertically challenged, greasy qtip will be laughing her ass off when she bails in 2021. The alderfucks are too stupid to realize they’ll be stuck holding their bag and no contingency plan. The second part is that the voters will just vote in another crooked democrat and things will be the same.

I just can’t believe people are really that stupid.

Look at all the big cities that are in trouble and you’ll see that they are governed by democrats. You PO’s that voted democrat out of loyalty to the party, you deserve what you get but, not everybody who vote R doesn’t.

Everyone that has a part of the problem should have a share in the repair, if it’s even possible! It is said that it will get worse before anything can get better. I know it could get worse but I doubt if it will ever get better.....

Don't even bother looking at what holidays you are rdo when you get the new fop handbook for next year, you will most likely be working them. The violence will continue unabated because of krazy kimmy and her flawed policies. When I took the entrance exam in the 80's all kinds of guys would kill to get on this job. It still is a good job with good benefits, there was always a lot of bullshit to wade thru even when I came on 30 years ago. This is not a job for everyone and some people find that out the hard way. If you are thinking about making a change look real good at what you are getting into, these suburban departments operate a lot differently than we do.

Retired police from a Midwestern city here. I'm one of the lucky ones who punched out on my terms in 2019 before any of the nationwide silliness of this year hit.

My message to those 2,023 of your brothers and sisters who are pension- eligible right now is to get out. Now. Today.

Yeah, the economy is a mess, but you can find something. This is my advice to every cop in America who's able to retire and who doesn't work in a real life Mayberry where the police are still respected, but it goes double for you guys and gals working in our major urban hellholes. From what I can tell from being a longtime reader of this blog, Chicago is probably the worst of the worst right now.

Frankly, if you've got the time (or a potential disability) that would get you a pension, and you're still working after everything that's gone down in LE this past year, you're already on borrowed time. If you could have bailed already and you end up in some jackpot tomorrow, you'll deserve it. You are all one bad call away from being world- famous. Even if you're an administrator or some other type of housemouse, well, you're still going to lunch, aren't you? You're still driving back and forth, going in and out of police buildings. It can totally still happen to you.

You may love The Job, but The Job don't love you. Get out if you're eligible because it isn't going to get better any time soon.

This is the Democrats game plan. The Democrats want the cities to burn so that Who ever is in the White House can declare Marshall Law, bring in Federal Troops, and more importantly take away our guns. If anyone things I am drinking the cool aide than I want to ask you why do you think George Soros is funding many "LETS NOT CHARGE PEOPLE WITH CRIMES" for the position of District Attorney and/or States Attorney through out this country? Look at the person who just taken over the LA District Attorney Office? What is going on with these non charging D/A's and S/A's is the reverse of the Broken Window Police Policies of the 90's. If you want further proof just go back and listen to Kamala Harris on her position of various issues, especially Black Lives Matter movement. My personal opinion is this nation is headed for a civil war and here is where the Democrats can force their agenda. It is going to get ugly.

OT. Lightfoot recommends a large donor' company for a 1.5 million dollar no bid contract to CPS to clean and sanitize schools. Schools CEO Janice Jackson awards the no bid contract and shortly thereafter is given a 40K raise yet CPD is still waiting for a contract. Then they raise our taxes and tell us we need to share the pain. So now Jackson makes 300K a year to manage a failed school system with a declining enrollment. Old partner works at Jive-ory Tower and confirmed they are overwhelmed with both the planned and unplanned amounts of people leaving. It’s funny, as I read thru these comments I have to chuckle. You guys and gals think anybody, ANYBODY, gives a shit about your manpower problems? It doesn’t matter to the mayor, alderman or committee men, it doesn’t matter to anyone in power. They have their own security or guns. You are just a pain in their asses taking money they could have for themselves or use for their ‘special’ programs. For years they refused to make their judicially required pension payments kicking that can further into the future. You think that bothered them. Here you are today on the brink of losing you promised retirement. Think about what you will do as a 70 year old with no pension, no skills, no social security, no financial future. If you’re young enough now to find another future, do it. If you’re too old to change jobs put every dime into a retirement account and start thinking about your financial future without a pension. If you think your pension is enshrined in state law or the state constitution, well, you are delusional. When you walk out the door to the parking lot to get into your squad, remember, nobody except your family, and they wish you had another job, cares about you. For the first time in your life think about yourself and your family. Start planning today for your tomorrow. Good luck my brothers and sisters. Oh, by the way, how’s that new contract? Yeah, that’s right, you STILL are working without a contract. How many years has it been that your caring employers have pushed that can down the road?

There could be 2,000 eligible on the roster that could leave just based on minimums in age and service time. Hiring spikes here and there over the past 2-3 decades always have big blocks of retirees coming of age - that nothing new and is always factored into city bean counter projections. The Clinton Crime Bill of 1994 subsidized hires and any 3 yrs prior, not sure how many in CPD put on in 94,95,96 but many could be coming up close to the 55/29+1.

As much as Larri couldn’t stand Rahm, she’s certainly taken her place in the lying bullshitters line...
In light of Larri’s current lying and coverup scandal regarding her effort to suppress the free press and withhold information, Larri will be on another rampage to vilify the police just to distract from her corrupt ways.

The soft defunding wasn’t enough and just doesn’t have that impact Larri needs right now. Sure, the Contract and its stalling is still on the back burner, but the theatrics are being crafted and they’re waiting for the opportune time before they’ll use it as a Hard De-Funding stunt, just improve the image of The Face of the City™️, not to mention she’s on board for another BIG a push for drastic disciplinary actions by getting Springfield or going along with JB/Kwammie with licensing- if it’s beneficial to the State elected, not just Larri LightFührer.

Larri is going to decimate as much as CPD as she can on her way out’ - which may be sooner than later (for family reasons).

To the people constantly asking about waiving the 55 year old age requirement if you have 29 years, or the people saying we should drop the medical retirement age to 53 or 50- you really don’t understand how a pension system works, do you?

If they simultaneously decrees the number of people paying in, while increasing the amount of people collecting, that would greatly accelerate the collapse of what is already a dwindling pension.
You know that pension crisis everyone keeps talking about? It’s a real thing.
And they are trying to find ways to fix it- not drain it faster.

Sorry to tell you, but you’re stuck here dependent on the city unless you did some work and lined up health care.

By this time next year ( 1 December 2021) what PERCENTAGE of Total Strength will be in Patrol; what PERCENTAGE will be Detective. ( These are the most important LE Functions and the only two areas that I have any experience in.) Contrarily, what PERCENTAGE will be desk- bound House Mouse administrative dead weight?

With reductions in manpower,it behooves CPD to get the maximum use out of each and every PO on a daily basis AND to get a higher percentage of PO on the street, either in Patrol or Detective

Why are there so many officers on this job that are 55+ with 30 or more years under their belt?
There is life after the police force. What are you waiting for to retire? Stop chasing the money before its to late.
If you are reading this I am talking about you!

Sshhh it’s actually more, closer to 2100. City Hall is suppressing the fact that the bulk of the most senior manpower from slower districts are leaving all at once with no plan to replace them. All young assets are to be allocated to the statistically most violent districts with not much chance of leaving. If you work in 022,016,017,019,018 or 001 expect things to get worse and if you are trapped in ghetto you could be there for rest of your career. Leave now if you are young and lateral someplace.

Finally someone with some common sense. It’s no secret with how many are retiring. Do they think you just retire in a day. The request has to be submitted in advance so that the city and pension board can do their paperwork so you can get your pension check in a timely manner
Most the people retiring this year have done so by November 15 so they can receive their COLA 3 % raise next December 16, followed by another 3% COLA raise on December 1 their next check

SOMETIMES A CRISIS cant be wasted

All employers try and cut spots for cost saving. At a certain point major things start going wrong.

1)officer use city to become certified and leave to quiet suburb
2)medical abuse increases (people start getting orperations and stay on medical longer
3)domestic go up for officer family (IE special ED)
4)vehicle accidents increase
5)officer obtain more complaints leading to more lawsuits.
6)experienced officers retire earlier
7) exempts with little actual leadership experience end up being promoted.

ON the good side

CITY has to increase the pay scale to keep officers from going to BURBs
City has to offer some kind of incentive to keep old officers MORE RAISES after 20 years
City may have to drop early retirement at 63
City may have consider residency
City may have to offer lateral transfer into CHICAGO.

Good luck LORI...

In other news, can you see Rahm as an ambassador? Imagine what he would do in that job. Some crooks always land on their feet. Perhaps if he had worn a dress and came out as a trans he could have gotten the transportation job from Buttplug. It's all about diversity. Buttplug couldn't run South Bend but what does that matter.

From Politico, The president of Chicago’s Unite Here Local 1 union representing hospitality workers told The Chicago Tribune she thought Emanuel would be a great Transportation secretary. Really?? And when Biden picked Buttigieg, swing vote Sen. SUSAN COLLINS (R-Maine) seemed devastated by what could have been. “I think Rahm Emanuel would have been a strong choice,” she said. What the hell is wrong with Collins? Another swamp dwelling republican that needs to be replaced.

Officials familiar with the transition said that even though Emanuel won’t be in the Cabinet, he still may end up in the administration. In very early conversations, an ambassadorship has been discussed, but that would also require Senate confirmation. Emanuel declined to comment.

Perv Biden is doing some great picking. It couldn't much worse.

I’m all for more taxes of any big corporation that supported any BLM bullshit or all the Democratic lockdowns. As for passing it on to the consumer, well, maybe the consumer should be a little smarter about who they do business with and who they support. It’s a chain. Give the business & consumer what they asked for. Honestly, if you’re a small business and you hung any BLM sign or you went the Bye-Don route in your window because you bought into the lie- good riddance. I know plenty were out there and I saved myself a whole lot of money not frequenting them. Everyone here likes to get on Starbucks (no I’m not a fan but they at least didn’t allow BLM signs in their windows or for staff to wear BLM items). On the other hand, I can’t tell you how many small independent businesses had BLM signs or LL meme supporting her lockdowns in the window, etc. I knew of a few restaurants around Loyola that had big “Thank You Gov. Pritzker” signs on the sidewalk (and they weren’t being ironic)...all because it was easier to hate the Orange Man. Reap what you sow. The only businesses I feel sorry for are the ones that were innocent of spreading any of the propaganda or employees who worked for them who didn’t agree.

I understand that many of you may be multi generation law enforcement & that Chicago has been home to your family for as many generations, but it's time to face the facts.
The majority of that City no longer has any love for you and it's time to save yourselves. Why stick your necks out for a majority of folks who would just as likely shoot at you as they would look at you? You can't save the businesses because your useless elected leaders are too busy protecting the criminals destroying these businesses every month. You are only going to be more closely scrutinized in the days to come, persecuted if you make the wrong move, & yet be even more overworked and underpaid.
It's time to let Chicago self implode and only then maybe will the residents grow a brain and figure out that the CPD was never the problem. It was the same useless politicians they kept voting in time after time based only on the color of their skin, how they could help the thugs, & all the free crap they promised to the hood rats.
Until you get some fresh, new, leadership from the top down, your job will continue to be hell.

This is the exact reason why they need to stop assigning a random beat car from the district to assist on the search warrants. I’m not going on someone else’s warrant and just hoping it goes good when I don’t even know any of the coppers, nope.

If you can demoralize and force officers to retire or leave the job then it becomes a lot easier for the Communists to institute one uniform police force across the country. And make no mistake, Lightfoot is a devout Communist.

If the officers retiring and leaving the job aren’t replaced, then defunding the police becomes easier also. An intended outcome of all this is to bankrupt the pension fund. But not to worry, you’ll be given a Universal Income by your fellow Comrades!

They are between 7-10 officers with less than 20 years who resign every month for a multitude of reasons. So every new class of 40 PPO's there is up to a 25% attrition rate. I like the idea of lateral transfers the FOP mentioned, make it 2-years probation, and develop an extensive FTO cycle for these transfers. There is plenty of talent that would move transfer in, we have a pretty good overall salary and benefits package at the end of the day.

ON the good side

CITY has to increase the pay scale to keep officers from going to BURBs
City has to offer some kind of incentive to keep old officers MORE RAISES after 20 years
City may have to drop early retirement at 63
City may have consider residency
City may have to offer lateral transfer into CHICAGO.

12/18/2020 01:17:00 PM

Who the hell would want to lateral transfer INTO Chicago? They'd have to be out of their tiny mind to do that.

More money? Can't see that happening either. Cop haters don't care unless they become the victims. Larry has his detail and is safe and warm. Drop residency? More incentive for folks to move to the burbs and take their hefty tax bills with them. Hell might as well work in the burbs too if residency ever leaves.

Can't see any positives on the good side. Well except the self cleaning oven might shift into turbo mode.

—————-
Why would suburban kids want to leave their area for this shithole department when they can be having a legit police career with more money and benefits in a suburb? There’s a reason all these young guys are lateraling out to go back to the suburbs..

Back in the day there were thousands and I mean thousands of applicants taking the Chicago Police tests. The Chicago Police entrance exam only came around once in awhile. Now they give the Chicago Police entrance exam a FEW times a year. The consensus from younger generation is they do not want to live in the city of Chicago. They would rather go work out in the suburbs where they can live wherever they want. Chicago taxes are one of the highest if not the highest around so most of your paycheck literally goes to just cost of living in Chicago.

Most people are against the police thanks to the media and the politicians in Chicago. Chicago politics is one of the most corrupt around and yes you can look that up. The mayor is fake. It’s ironic that the same people that she is against, and talks so horribly about: she is actually just like them please just listen to her talk when she looses her cool.

If I was a betting person I would say more people will be leaving/retiring than applications coming in. You want to make this job more desirable to possible candidates lift residency.

This is the best advice I've ever seen on this blog!!!!

It is very possible for every copper to retire a millionaire!!

If you have to work overtime and/or VRI to make up for the money you pour into the Deferred, it will be the best financial decision you have ever made.

I put half of every raise I ever got into the deferred and it has paid off in a very big way. If you put the money in at the same time you get your raise, you never miss the money you never actually had!

Pour money into the deferred and then get out of this fucking job as soon as you can!

Remember, it costs $75 for every $100 you put into the deferred.

I knew a copper who never put a cent into the deferred because he claimed he would never see any of it....He was right since he died before he retired....HOWEVER, he left a family behind who could've used it. Each to their own I suppose.

Its time for the FOP to wrestle away healthcare from the City. FOP should get quotes and get a plan that we pay into and starts our coverage at age 50. City is hanging on to healthcare to entrap you till age 55 so they don't have to hire. 2 percent now, and who knows what it will be 5 or 10 yrs down the road. Force the City to direct healthcare money into a pension on the brink of disaster. Nobody in other major Cities like New York stay past their 20 years unless they are promoted. Restore the age of 50 to collect for these young bucks on the job now. Explain why some can do 20yrs and have a healthcare option while others have to do 32yrs for the same benefit. Its time to put service time ahead of birthdates. Now granted, all these things should have been getting done 25yrs ago. Maybe the window of opportunity closed on that. Nolan, Donahue and others spent the time planning Corned Beef dinners and Golf outings instead. 9/11 was a good time to get it done and they did nothing. Are you listening FOP? If Catanzara wants to be the William Wallace of the FOP, this is how it gets done. Signed...KG.

I have seen officers from other departments with years of experience forced to complete the full academy. Sad

Ok, I voted for him too but I have to now ask “what has he done that’s positive for us?” It’s been 9 months and he’s done nothing for us. Although I agree with him but His love for Trump and hate for Lightfoot does nothing for us. His mouth is actually hurting us. Many were star struck by him but fighting with the mayor gets us nothing. He said pension and residency were his top priorities. Well, has he done anything about it? No. Has anything happened on the contract? Still no. Filed for arbitration? No. Many are losing faith in him.

You do not want him fighting with tbe mayor because it gets us nothing, but you want residency lifted and pension issues solved. Exactly how can he go about politely addressing your issues when our mayor is a police-hating nut job who loves jamming up police officers.

And, you wrote he has done nothing for us. You are a fool. He stands up for us at every turn and calls out LL. I kick myself each time I see him fighting the good fight for us. Why? Because I did not vote for him, and now I regret it, but I will certainly vote for him in the future.

The cyber-hack that took place by China and Iran was very, very serious and MSM says nothing. The MSM is so bad that they should be considered an enemy of the state. We are going to find out soon what took place and it hit all aspects of our government including our nuclear assets. MSM don't you care about what happens to our country?
Do you love communism. The hack was also wired in Dominion voting fraud systems so I guess this is justification for not mentioning it.

The MSM media should start considering getting security because when they are on one of their remotes people are going to start calling them out on live television. MSM is so corrupt and complicit in their misinformation campaign that nobody in that industry can think for themselves, it is all top down talking points. We are in a turning point in this country and they are just talking heads spewing propaganda. I have no respect for the MSM and the only people I listen to are a few people on Fox. And enough with the COVID PORN.

Hey JB and Groot, Minnesota is auditing the numbers for the Coronavirus science and data. Colorado just released that 45% of Coronavirus deaths were gun shot victims.
Jabba, you better start counting flu deaths again and get your books in order because you know how this works, once one state does it, the rest start doing it and you won't be able to test 100.000 people a day. 13 million deaths with only 14.3 million people in the state, might want to chill with the numbers because people might to start to question them.

Off Topic - The pension. Remember this my brothers and sisters. In America laws are passed to screw people out of their money. This is done to enrich the few or compensate (lawfully so you see, since it is the law) for public programs that were abused by politicians who spent uncontrollably in other areas to garner votes. Failure to fund these programs has created a great strain on these programs, especially in the zero percent decade long interest rate environment. Our pension is one such program. If you can retire, retire. You have been warned.

Max out your deferred comp. Guys say they can’t afford to do that. The fact is, you can’t afford not to do that. Invest in yourself and your future. If there is absolutely no way you can max out, then put in double what you think you can. Do it now! Tax savings today because your whole deferral is put into differed comp BEFORE it’s taxed by the government. Don’t wait. Do it now.

12/18/2020 07:15:00 PM

You're taking for granted and assuming the equity markets always go up and yield a positive return every year. Post orcehestrated banking and housing "crisis" of 2008-09 that would be true, but the equity markets aren't a buy and hold forever. You just happen to have invested and perhaps liquidated your holding during a prolonged up cycle in the market. Currently, this "Bull" is long in the tooth (12 years) and is running on fumes.

You all do what you like, you're grown men and women. However, give some thought to moving your holding into something with less risk if you are 50 years of age or older and have seen your deferred comp account double and triple in the last 12 years. You're playing with fire if you don't lighten up the equity side of your investment portfolio.

There will be a Bear market again, perhaps sooner than you think. Don't be the over 50 cop who is pissing and moaning about the makers because their account went down by 30-40%.

Remember, if they make police go to licensing, the city can't control who gets fired or disciplined. That would have to go before a board composed of the same people in the industry (police or former police).
For example, doctors and lawyers have boards with guess what, doctors and lawyer, not political appointee's.

Couple things here shill. The pension is protected and enshrined in Illinois State Law. Also, if I’m 70 and lose my lawfully protected pension than guess what pal, I ain’t got a good goddamn thing to lose. Think on that pal. You think I’m the only one who thinks that? Tree of Liberty and all.

12/18/2020 07:43:00 PM

I don't know what planet you live on, but nothing, NOTHING is protected or enshrined anywhere, especially in Illinois.

If you did not contribute to Deferred Comp as soon as you qualified (in my time we had to wait for it to begin) and work for non-government employers, paying into S.S. and Medicare, you are a fool. If you do, contribute as much as the law allows NOW.

I retired in 1996, worked in private industry that had a 401K for a number of years, that along with the pension, Deferred Comp and other investments have garnered us a pretty good life after retirement. On the street during the first few months and an old timer told me to prepare for retirement now!. Look to the last 5 years, what are you going to do, make a plan to get there. Yes, I raised kids, private tuitions and part of the time was a single parent. It can be done and I was not the only one. Starting pay was $8200, and no overtime pay for many years., So those of you making north of $75K now should throttle back on the big cars, too many nights out and begin slowly. Pace it out a bit because tomorrow comes on fast. You can make it happen, but sadly not on the CPD now. Reality is staring you in the face right now.

As for another posters comment on why stay: $100K is better than $75 even with the deduction for the pension. So, take that $25K and break it down for 2080 hours (normal yearly hours worked) I am sure you can make more money working at another job. Don't kid yourself, being the Police is not what it was years ago, just unappreciated and under paid and without a contract for 4 years should tell you something. Oh, opening attorney fees for being in the wrong place will eat that up in a minute..

Just my humble opinion

lateral transfers the FOP mentioned, make it 2-years probation, and develop an extensive FTO cycle for these transfers.

Your an idiot. Why would anyone transfer to Chicago from the burbs. And two years of probation? Sure real attractive

I left Chicago for the burbs a few years ago best decision. I'm also finishing a masters program to leave this career altogether.

12/19/2020 06:46:00 AM

*******

Because the burbs for the most part are micromanaging, activity based departments with very little room to get away from bosses you clash with. Your watch commander hates you in the burbs? Tough shit. No bidding to different districts or even watches. Happy misery for the next 5 years. And the burbs are just as prone to lawsuits as we are. I'd rather be exactly where I'm at, getting zero activity and having bosses that like it that way. Getting any day off I ask for, getting 2 nice vacations a year with baby furloughs sprinkled in between. This department only sucks for the people who take this joke of a job seriously.

I think that medical at 29 and a day is realistic. If you got on the job at an early age you shouldn’t be penalized. Think about it this way. If you got on at 21 you’ll have to do 34 years for the medical. How’s that fair?

You should have figured out "fair"has nothing to do with this shitty job a long time ago. I left at 50 and was the most senior officer retiring from my district that year. Everyone else was 55,one PO had 20 years,19 of them on the desk. I'd have had to throw away another 5 years of life, total of 33 to get the insurance. If you came on in your 20's this is just another shit sandwich you'll have to eat.

Just tell them that if it was you, you'd take 3 days on the medical for every 1 day off. At this point in their career they can't possibly have qualms regarding that.

Good thinking. Protect yourself and switch your deferred to fixed and get 3% and be able to sleep nights during any correction. Then invest in the stock market outside of deferred so you can take advantage of long termed capital gains taxes. A lot of guys don’t realize if you sell your stocks or mutual funds the long term capital gains are taxed at 15% but if you do it in deferred when you withdraw the capital gains it’s taxed as ordinary income which is anywhere from 25% to 28% depending on your income which usually is not low because of the pension

Having some trouble deciphering your incoherent post... why can't they give up 8.5 hours and be done with it and retire? You made it sound like they're being held hostage for something they had no knowledge of. They knew they had training, and they thought they wouldn't take time for missing it. If one day of suspension time is holding up their retirement, it should take one day or 8.5 hours of time due to solve that minor problem. What's the issue? Why are you whining?

Everyone's situation is different. Financial advisors will sell you junk. Unfortunately, too many officers fall victims to investment firms. The way to help yourselves is to study finance (including investments) on the city's dime. Then you can asses your own situation (age, assets, desired lifestyle, investment tolerance, income, human capital, and so on). I studied hard and earned a few graduate degrees. I financed my house on a short term loan and I paid it off about a year ago. Now, I have the problem of deciding whether I want to sell it now and make a huge profit (in the current market). That is a nice problem to have. And I do not have to worry about alternative career options.

ya, I put my defered in fixed for the 3% just before Trump took office. Turned out to be a bad decision but that's fine I'll deal with it. I keep hearing if your over 50 put it in fixed but now I am thinking differently (and not because of the Trump thing). Now I am thinking I would not have used the deferred until I am 70 anyway (when you are forced to make withdrawals). So ya I'll be retiring soon, but that money can sit for 19 more years - so I never should have put it in fixed even if the market crashed when Trump took office (which it did not).

Another point - we are long into a good cycle with the market - it is going to crash soon. We are LONG into it. So I am thinking of staying in fixed until that crash occurs. and it ALWAYS occurs.

Hey, 12/18/20, 7:43pm; You, pal, are an idiot. You think your pension is protected by law? Those who write the law can easily change the law. One small stroke of a pen after a vote, a democratic vote, and you’re living on $227.00 a month Social Security regardless of your contribution. That’s right, that’s your Social Security on the Windfall Exemption thanks to Rostenkowski, who, by the way, went to prison. You’re a real thinker.

And, you must be unaware that the stalemate wss not caused by President Catanzara. He inherited it.

If this is even remotely true, it's missing a lot of key information. That makes me think they probably didn't do some e-learning that was required. The discipline would come only after them repeatedly being told thet must complete the training. They likely decided they didn't have to do the training because they're on the medical. Unless their medical condition prevents them from clicking a mouse, they would still have to do the training, either from home, or by going into a district. They thought they could skip it and nothing would happen. They were wrong.
