The 10 or 12 hour days is the city's only way to combat the manpower shortage. The union will need to correct the current way baby furlo and personal days and the fact you need to add time for your last furlo segment is handled. The next thing the city will do is raise the age from 55 to get insurance, this will force officers to stay longer keeping up manpower.
When things get bad just create another exempt position to solve the problem. Works every time

I think what people are forgetting and what started a lot of our problems is the fact that we can arrest all the bad guys, BUT there’s no place to put them. Gang investigations back up to 100-150 guys?!? We don’t have enough take home cars for that. So when you newbies get here, you’ll have to share with each other and car pool. Just so you know. And don’t go crying to the vehicle guy about getting a car!
Of course they want to “beef up” gang un-investigations. The old days of wire taps, pen-links, jail calls, operations, etc.. has been gone for a long time. I worked in 011 when McKenzie was there as Commander. He is an insufferable prick. He is the LAST guy you want in Inspections. He too only wants to move up higher in this train wreck of a Dept.and will do it on the backs of officers. He will SPAR for unshined shoes. Expect Inspections to make officers miserable. Like he did in 011.
Nice way to try to rebuild morale with officers, bringing back inspectors will go a long way in helping build morale, jackass!!!

I don’t understand why you need the inspectors with the response time. All the cars are gps, can’t on person just watch that from a computer. As far as the uniforms go I think we are too far gone from. I remember coming on and the captains would check for salt stains on your pants in the winter and shined shoe/boot. And that wasn’t that long ago!! Nowadays it’s a free for all Molly vests with blood types on it, gym shoes. I really don’t care but that’s what it is.

They really need to put all active officers (not on limited duty) back on the streets. All clerical administration jobs aside from working the front desk should be assigned to civilians. There's no need to have an officer making 100k a year off the streets doing a job that an admin clerk could do for a fraction of the cost. It's been cried about for years but how many cops are hiding inside 35th and inside spots in Units along with hidden spots in the commanders office. This dept has 100x able bodies hiding in clerical spots all while the the watches have to continously down beat cars and work with less manpower. The manpower is not as great as it used to be but there's alot of manpower acting as sitting ducks working inside spots. And one last thing CAPS if caps isn't holding a weekly fundraiser for the community they should spend that other time actually MEETING the community. How many dst have a whole caps team yet they are no where to be found?

Been on the job for 32 years. 23 as a Sgt off the list, no merit. My officers know my expectations. These are my 10 commandments.
1) Be on time. Just call if you are going to be late.
2) Wear the uniform properly. You know exactly what I mean. Just because you work in the ghetto doesn’t mean you look like ghetto. Take pride. You worked hard to earn that uniform. You volunteered to wear it. Respect the uniform. Don’t look like a slob.
3) Answer your calls promptly and respectfully. Pretend it was your grandma that called you.
4) Be professional at all times and remember you are on camera.
5) Use the proper force necessary to go home to your families. Remember the necessary lawful use of force.. Not excessive but not insufficient. Learn and memorize that use of force module like your life depended on it because it does. Prison is a new reality for our police officers.
6) Fill out your paper work as if it was going to the Supreme Court. The “In Summary” is wrong. Details and more details especially in your TRR.
7) Be where you are suppose to be. If you need to make a run, then call your Sgt.
8) ZERO numbers game with me. I don't care about activity. Come in with zeroes as long as you always answered your calls.
9) Back each other up. I will never tolerate cowards or dogs on assist calls. I will write you up.
10) Never LIE to me. I can’t help you if you lie to me.

The suburbs and other cities that have 12 hr days don’t have the constant chaos and work load that we have. The 005th District hates the 10hr days. The units like them because things are different in a unit than in a district.

Most suburban departments run 12s because they are struggling with manpower. Get some TOJ or feel free to leave for your glorified suburb.
Forget the 12 hour days. How about a maximum number of cancelled days off in a calendar year. Say 18 a year max. Only exception would be a declared disaster by the State, not the City. Parades are not a disaster, neither are yutes downtown.

Homicides have declined since they disbanded the units and sent people back to districts. And most districts are still way short on bodies. Maybe it's time to deputize the migrants and put them on foot patrol.
Foot patrol? They’re already on foot patrol, meeting their weed man right outside the station. Male migrants dropping their wives and babies off at Mariano’s on 18 & Canal to beg for money and to do sexual favors. Female migrants jumping in and out of car right in front of the station. Drug deals and prostitution right under our noses.

They raise the age from 55 you will see a mass exodus. It will have the exact opposite effect.
12 hour days are going to be tough for officers in faster districts like 011. They will burn out quickly, doesn't matter how many extra days off they fool you young guys with. Just go to the 10 hour days and be done with it. If it works in 005 it can work anywhere.

The above plan is horrible! First officers should take off all they can as the job is no longer tolerable. Ah I remember the days when going to work was the best part of the day and 10-12 hours happened because actual police work was being done. I feel sorry for today's P.O.'s because nothing is worse than working for people who try to screw you over at every turn. As for the insurance, I'm pretty sure it's been proven that that carrot won't keep people around longer. When I retired it wasn't even a consideration and I left at 51 running for the exit. Please stay safe everyone and try not to step on any department or city "landmines". And get the hell out of the city and state if possible you'll be happier.

Say bye bye to the molle vest. Rumor has it that Larry is not a big fan of all our equipment on there. He is considering an outer carrier with no molle. He thinks we look sloppy. He likes the old look of the vest under our shirt and crown hat and no baseball caps or gym shoes. WTF! If that happens I’ll be the first one to quit and go to another agency. 100-125 recruits a month will be impossible unless they either lower the standards more than they have already or increase benefits to the point where qualified people take the job. I doubt they will give more benefits though.

I can definitely see them bringing back inspectors even though we really do not need them. The bosses on the watch should be addressing these issues already. We don't need over paid positions to do barely any work and work half days.

The suburbs and other cities that have 12 hr days don’t have the constant chaos and work load that we have. The 005th District hates the 10hr days. The units like them because things are different in a unit than in a district.

SWAT should NOT be on the streets, we need to be constantly training to remain the tip of the spear. it. If you put SWAT in districts half the team would leave SWAT. Our training would be interrupted and we would NOT be ready when patrol needs us. Do Navy SEALs go out and answer call for regular Navy? How about Delta Force? SWAT is a team that gets activated when you break the glass for emergencies.
Equipment on the trucks? I need to have my SWAT Kit with me at all times in case I get THE call. My equipment sitting on a truck can be compromised by the elements. No one touched my SWAT Kit but me. Chicago SWAT is a nationally recognized elite team. This would make us mediocre. Do you as blue shirts want that for your SWAT team.

#1 No shoe shining or leather shoes for this cowboy. My Nike Air gym shoes are working out just fine for me. I even used a sharpie marker on the swoosh. You see I have bunions and Dr Patel wrote me a note so I can take care of my footsies. When I work the desk I sometimes wear horse slippers. God only gave me two feet. I have to take care of them.

#3 Wearing a leather duty belt. That is a huge NO NO. First of all mine does not fit and Dr Patel would not be happy with that. You don’t want me on the medical do you. I can’t afford it. Three boys in Catholic school. I don’t want Marxist commies running around my house.
#4 Crown hat with a shield is not going to work for this worker. Last time I saw that hat was when my puppy was chewing on it. That particular hat causes my Prurigo nodularis (PN) to become inflammatory thus my scalp disease cause me distress. Dr Patel’s sent me to his cousin, Dr Malaiyandi wrote me a note. It took me six months to break in my CPD baseball cap and look like an OG for my IG videos.
#5 Wearing a vest under my uniform shirt? LMAO. For heaven sakes NO! I got what’s called granuloma annulare and it itches like crazy. I have to apply antifungal creams three times a day and that best would aggravate my condition. Definitely not Soup Larry. My skin has ti breathe and wearing my vest under my shirt would not be conducive for my diagnosis. Got to me in medical compliance. I almost my molle vest allows me to have a nice pouch for my phone charger, my iPad charger (Netflix) and snacks and sprite. You see Larry, I get the low sugar if I don’t eat. My molle vest is my life saver.

The only manpower problem is from the pay and benfits being so low as to not attract anyone to the job and arrtition rate is high. Its all about market forces.

In places that have 10 and 12 hour days, tou have to go back to work after training or court. Also, the fifth district guys were screwed all the time with the cancelled days off. One guy with a four day weekend had ALL of his rdos cancelled and worked 8 12 hour days in a row.
Dupage County Cop here. Just trying to get a better understanding..we recently had all our CPD laterals leave and go back. From my knowledge, they all worked in some of the most dangerous and busiest districts in the city. Is this a common trend? What gives?
Worked for WCSO road patrol before coming to CPD. It's a huge cultural diffrence and we used to have little to no regular supervision. I could also not take the 12 hour days with court and call outs. I miss my own car, thats about it. But, cpd is going to be more lake a suburb soon with all the mickey mouse shit and data mining. Also, don't miss writing a report for everything. All that said, most the laterals leaving CPD were not balls of fire.

I agree with you. Molle is here to stay. The city can’t afford to reimburse 12,000 police officers for purchasing an outer vest cover and all the pouches I bought. If they want a vest cover with no molle, the city has to buy it. That’s not gonna to happen. Johnson tried to force us to wear that stupid tie clip, and most of us didn’t even wear ties. Waste of money.

Are you sure? I was just out there and I didn’t see them wearing outer covers. Wearing outer vest covers are a huge morale boost. Some agencies are allowing beards. It’s time to modernize the CPD uniform. We don’t need that stupid leather belt or to wear a hat with a shield and a vest under our shirt.
I think it’s time we went to a dark blue shirt just like the Firearms Instructors wear. It looks better with the black outer vest cover. Keep the light blue shirt for our dress uniform. They also need to approve the taser being allowed to be carried on the vest. Lots of agencies allow their Officers and it’s tactically more efficient.
Let’s go Superintendent, that’s a great way to improve our morale.

The tax base continues to shrink and residency would not help that any. You live in the city, you tend to shop in the city. Live out of the city, shop out of the city too. Stop spreading rumors! The Superintendent cannot just change the uniform GO for rank and file. The molle vest is an approved authorized uniform item in our General Order. The uniform committee is the only ones who can rescind a uniform item, but all of us who purchased our own vest would be grandfathered in. They could only do it to the new recruits coming on the job. Good luck trying to figure out who’s who.
You’re probably some old timer reliving your days of glory in the 60s and 70s. Times have changed. We are no longer a paramilitary organization and uniform and grooming standards have relaxed over the years and that’s a good thing.
Honestly, we really need to do away with a field uniform. A polo shirt with cargo pants is good enough with an outer vest as long as it has our star and name on it should suffice. Keep the dress uniform for parades and ceremonies only.

Irresponsible talk like this will cause SWAT operators to leave the team. Many of us have put our hearts into this team. We don’t receive any type of D3 pay or any incentive pay like other specialized units. Many of us had to buy our own equipment and we are on call with ZERO compensation. We are a strictly voluntary unit with a legitimate selection process. No phone call. No merit. Every operator in this unit earned the title Chicago Police SWAT Operator. In my humble opinion, we are the only legitimate unit on CPD. FACT! We constantly grind with OUR blood, sweat, and tears. What the chain of command needs to understand is we are a necessary evil. You need us, we don’t need you. So stay in your lane and stop the foolish talk.

No unit should have the name ‘ special’ in its title. No one in the CPD is special. When officers believe they are special problems arise.
Please…for the love of your health and family…fight these 12 hour days. I promise you they will burn you out and ruin your personal life. Yes…the suburbs do them…however they don’t have the call volume and violence we have. Also…you know the city never does anything “temporarily” to benefit you. They do it to benefit themselves. They will cut the manpower numbers and our pension will never get funded. There is no balance with the 12 hour day. You literally wake up, get ready, and work all day. You’re not getting more time off. It’s just condensed. For those with kids…when will you pick up and drop off at school? How will you help with homework? There will only be 2 watches. Imagine working midnights and getting a late domestic 19k right before check off. You’re looking at a 13-14 hour day. Not to mention…how many of us travel 1 hour to work? Add that to your day. Do not do anything that benefits the city and believe me this is a benefit to them only.
Would love 10-12 hour days but old timers will keep that from happening, they would rather be obligated to show up 6 days a week and work 6 hours a day rather than having to show up 3 times in a row before getting 3 days off give or take the planned schedule. Everyone will say 10-12 hour days are rough and they suck but most suburb departments and other cities that do that schedule love it and have more time off. Let’s be honest, a 12 hour day will really be like 10. 5th district loves it, any unit that has 10 hour days loves it, why wouldn’t patrol in other districts love it?

Every new superintendent people say they're planning on getting rid of the vest carriers. Uniforms need to be cleaned up, but the vest carrier is pretty much essential these days.
--With the size of some POs, they literally cannot fit all the required equipment on a duty belt. Not to mention some officers even have their IFAKs attached on the vest carrier. That will be a nice suntimes article in a couple years when some community member bleeds out because a new uniform requirement came out which effectively mandated that all personal medical kits are not to be carried on an officer but kept in their cars. At least the officers on scene will be wearing their crown caps.
--BWCs are sacrosanct in policing these days. Does the city want every policing event recorded by BWCs attached by magnets or a flimsy plastic slide to a uniform shirt pocket? How many days will officers start taking for not stopping in the middle of a fight to find and re-secure their BWCs to their uniform shirts? The only secure attachment of a BWC is the molle to a vest. Maybe the city can update the uniform shirts to have molle strips.
--There is empirical evidence that outer carriers are load bearing and reduce the stress on officer's backs, hips etc. It's unfortunate enough Lakefront Laura thinks we look too scary, but to the people who are insecure that some asshole in Arizona thinks we look like security guards really give a fuck about what people think when you make it to the pension with bullshit back problems for no reason besides VEST CARRIER UGLY/SCARY/WE LOOK LIKE PIRATES.
Yea uniforms and vests have gotten sloppy, and they should be cleaned up. But then again who cares. The only people who care hate your guts, and everyone else doesn't notice or care.
Response: If the SWAT Unit is the only unit that is legitimate unit on the department and your working harder than anyone for no more pay. Then the whole group of you are suckers. I retired last January, 22 years on and 57 yo. I saw this coming last year and I chose my 13 yo son instead. Being a Police Officer is a noble profession, truly. For all the young bucks out there, pace yourself as things will eventually get better. Something I noticed a few years ago was that a lot of new hires, don't have the "team mentality". Watch out for each other. On the street, your team is all you have. Be aware of your surroundings and "read the road". Look for the senior officers, they may not have stripes but the seasoning that they have wasn't free. Good luck folks.

Not so fast. Make sure you know what you’re talking about. A Molle vest or outer carrier are only APPROVED items… no mandatory. What’s mandatory is wearing a vest. You may legally fulfill that requirement by wearing it under your shirt. IF YOU choose to wear it on the outside you may, but you have to wear an approved vest carrier. So no, they don’t have to reimburse you for anything. You could have worn it under your shirt to be in compliance, YOU CHOSE to elect to wear it on the outside which means you bought a Molle carrier. Just stop looking like a slob.

Haha. I know. Because they leave CPD and realize they have gone to a department that doesn’t allow “early ducks”, furlough Friday’s and they expect you to go out and write movers and DUIs. There’s not calling late for an hour on the front or getting a cut on your Friday. Lots of people finding that the grass isn’t always greener. In CPD you can work a beat car, do zeros every day and make over 100k for doing nothing. Can’t do that in the burbs.
What if Snelling implements his Quarter Master system of issuing uniforms that he would have made to his set standards? Rip a pair of pants-turn them in for a new pair. Rip a shirt-turn it in for a new one.
And when you retire, uniforms will all be City property that you’d have to turn in or pay for if records aren’t straight??
