WGN noticing response times are up:
- A new report from the City of Chicago’s Inspector General finds it’s
currently impossible to say with certainty how quickly police respond to
9-1-1 calls in many cases.
When Evelyn O’Connor was randomly attacked along the Mag Mile last winter, she called 9-1-1 but gave up on waiting for cops to come.
“We waited quite a while, maybe 20 minutes and at that time I was just like I want to get home,” she said.
Faced with an exodus of officers in recent years, WGN Investigates has reported similar stories about slow – or no – police response.
The city’s inspector general set out to evaluate police response times; but ran into a wall. The IG found nearly half of the calls to 9-1-1 for police response did not include a response back with an officer’s arrival time at the scene.
And they came up with this number:
Chicago has 1,600 fewer officers than it did before the pandemic. As WGN Investigates reported in January, recently retired cops like John Garrido called it a critical shortage.
“What we really started to notice over the last few years is we didn’t have the manpower to man the beat cars,” he said.
We were sounding that alarm and beating that drum for nearly ten years.
No one listened, and now they act surprised.

Same with CFD. Doesn’t have the manpower or ambos to handle the ever increasing call volume OEMC receives. Often they’re delayed on scene for up to an hour waiting for CPD assist for violent patients or zebras. Not the police’s fault at all.
Paramedics are lateraling over to the burbs for close to the same pay but not dealing with the usual suspects keeping their health, safety and sanity.
Less and Less are applying for the medic job. We know the the police recruit academy classes are abysmal.

Maybe, we solve the staffing issue by upping benefits to get more QUALITY applicants while BACKING your guys/gals with quality training to conduct themselves accordingly. If they did everything within ILCS and policy, BACK THEM, you'll get more bodies in seats!! How much of the Response Time is due to Heavy Traffic?
Could the Response Time be improved IF CPD had fewer Cars and more Patrol on Foot or Mounted?
It is frustrating to see a Car ( with lights and sirens on) trying to navigate through heavy traffic, when a Patrolman in foot or Mounted could easily move through.
It seems Response Time was lower in the 1920s/1930s when: (1) Most CPD were on Foot; (2) CPD had more Horses than Cars; (3) No Radios; (4) Police Call Boxes on every corner. Voice Radio, in vehicles,was not commonplace until
early 1950s; and portable Walkie-Talkies until mid-1960s.

Law enforcement officers enforce the laws. Were they to rigorously enforce all the laws, laws concocted by the persons elected to govern, you, the citizen, would be fucked. 2. Law enforcement officers cannot, and are not, employed to protect you from anything, especially not yourself. You put yourself in the wrong place, at the wrong time, and younhave fucked yourself. I have nothing but time on my hands to think up of ways to fuck with people and coppers because I don't really do too much work. Blowing off jobs (and dudes in an alley) is my specialty, oh, taking 2 hour lunches and trying to get an early duck because of some excuses I just made up about a "sick kid", my tummy ache because the shitty place I ate at or something about my dog is a real close second.

12 hour days makes some sense. Some problems would be what to do with bid spots on the watch that would be eliminated. Another would be picking furlos by unit or would you have the two watches pick separately. Never was a big fan of furlo picks by watch. Know some suburban coppers who work 12 hour shifts and they like it but they are not running around shagging jobs all night long.

I'll hold court in the hallway for about a 3rd of my tour and do nothing but bitch, moan, whine and complain about everything under the sun. Oh, there's more than a few conspiracies in there too! "No one got fired for doing nothing!" As I like to say. The other thing I like to say is "back when we could be the police"! Oh, my arrests back then? Pretty much the same as they are now- zeros! Because we don't have a quota, kid! Now I gotta figure out how to make some more OT, then lay up on stress leave because I'm burnt out.
