Crime Fighter Retiring
We remember this guy when the TV was black and white:
Tom Skilling, the dean of Chicago weather forecasters, says there’s a 100% chance he retires early next year.
His last day will be Feb. 28, marking the end of a 46-year run on WGN-Channel 9.
Skilling, 71, made the announcement Thursday on “WGN Evening News.”
We also jokingly named Skilling to assorted superintendents' offices as the single biggest reason crime was ever down. Rain, snow, wind or cold temps, if there was ever a weekend with lower stats, it was all Skilling's doing.
We may have even recommended him for a couple of Department Commendations.
Happy retirement and hopefully we're joining you soon.

Congratulations on your retirement Tom. I've watched your forecasts since was a teenager. You are on of Chicago's finest citizens. I wish you a long and healthy retirement.
P.J. Hoff and Fahey Flynn, weather and news.
A perfect gentleman to say the least! Wishing you a great retirement.
One solid aspect of Chicago. Thanks, Tom. Enjoy your retirement.
Congratulations & thank you Mr. 'I can have you killed' Skilling. *pat t that was a good skit
I watched his retirement statement live as WGN news is frequently left on in the background. They still do some true investigational reporting with a healthy dose of all around silly f*ckery! I thank you all!
Listening to him sa his goodbyes, I thought damn! He's leaving?!? This city is really f*cked!
I hope he enjoys retirement.
I doubt he will, he wants to stay in Chicago.
Good guy but cannot compare to channel 7 John Coleman!
now there was a guy who LOVED his job!
Before grilling, be sure to check with Tom Skilling.
Congratulations! Job well done! You will not be forgotten! Enjoy your retirement!
Steve Dahl used to do a bit with Tom Skilling on his radio show. He would have Tommy Skillethead interview Tom Skilling, who played along nicely
As a meteorologist, Im also a P.O. on the job and worked with Skilling for 3 yrs as his intern (back in the late 80's), nothing but best wishes for his retirement. God knows its well earned and to the nicest guy on tv!!! Best wishes , stay healthy and happy retirement, my friend, mentor and colleague!!!
A legend just like John Coleman.
"....when TV was black and white...."
Yah, but I remember him from when he was in Milwaukee on Channel 6, junior.
A huge supporter of the police and he was involved with the Chicago police memorial foundation. A true gentleman and a hell of a meteorologist. Hat tip and raised glass to you Tom

My entire life, this guy told me the weather. I respect it. I'm also jelly, because 10 more years of this will be miserable.
Tommie skilling turned ultra woke with climate change nonsense .. still will miss him
He’s a good guy. Always stopped to talk to coppers.

Congratulations to Tom Skilling. I remember when the dullard Duo of Steve and Gary use to make fun of him calling him Tommy skillet head. Looks like both those idiots are long gone and Skillings still around. The revenge of longevity and having a skill.
P.J. Hoff and Fahey Flynn, weather and news.
And the man in charge of looking out the window. I used to wait for PJ to make those drawings.
Good luck Tom. Jerry Taft was always a good guy too. Said hi shook your hand bs’ed a little bit. Pilot in Vietnam I think too
His brother Jeffrey Skilling was the mastermind of the Enron scandal. It's good to stand by family but it also seems that Tom Skilling was in denial about how bad it all was, or his brother's role in it. Oh well, nobody's perfect.
With Skilling gone, there is absolutely NO ONE on TV to trust!!

And it IS 100% complete nonsense, but a very lucrative money laundering scheme!
I remember the guys in 019 kidnapped him one night and took him to the Slammer for a few. Tom missed work the following day. He’s a great guy and I always enjoyed his presentation of the weather. We will miss you Tom
As a former neighbor of Tom, all I can say is "classy" person. Always talked to everyone in the hallways, elevators, and the streets. I retired from CPD and moved out of state, but I still watch WGN from my new location. Best of Luck to him!
A truly wonderful person, that is as nice in person as he seems to be on TV.
I attended many of his "Servere Weather " symposiums that he held annually at Fermilab, with lay and expert weather people from all over the world.
I was amazed, initially, to see how respected and admired he is in the field.
My favorite story from one of the sessions was from the head of the "Severe Weather Prediction Center" for NOAA who told a story of one day having a co-worker come into his office and tell him that Tom Skilling was on the phone and wanted to speak to him.
He said that as he reached to pick up the phone all he could think of was "Tom Skilling wants to talk to me...what did I do wrong"????"
It turned out that Tom was just calling to ask him to speak at the symposium that year.
I still watch him remotely now. He will be missed.
