Mayor Brandon Johnson’s decision to bring a NASCAR road race back downtown comes even though the event this past 4th of July weekend generated less economic impact than predicted and cost the city at least $3.5 million for police overtime and construction.
The $3.5 million figure stands in contrast to the $620,000 NASCAR paid the city to transform streets surrounding Grant Park into a 12-turn, 2.2-mile racetrack. NASCAR paid a base $500,000 permit fee to the Chicago Park District in April and in late September cut a final check for the 2023 race for nearly $120,000 to pay the city its portion of ticket sales as well as commissions for food, beverage and merchandise, according to city records.
An economic impact report released last week showed the race came in slightly below projections on attendance and the economic impact that racing organizers touted last year. Interrupted by near-historic rains, the race drew just over 79,000 attendees — short of NASCAR’s 100,000 attendee projection — and just under $8.3 million in estimated state and local taxes, below the projected $8.9 million. Overall, the economic impact of $109 million was also lower than the NASCAR-projected total of $113.8 million, the report showed.
In typical government fashion, you can be sure they spent the "projected" money long before they got the "actual" money. We'll see that tax increase shortly. Now imagine Jethro and Billy Bob giggling while they cut that check to the city.

I think you’ll see a much greater return on the event over the next 2 years. Many, including myself, sat back this year to see how the event would go and to be fair it was somewhat of an entertaining race. I also expected to be working the even so didn’t buy tix but might next year and I’m not even a huge nascar guy. I’ve heard also that F1 is in the market to add additional street races in the US and Chicago is on their list of cities to consider.

NASCAR is dying. It was the number one spectator sport, but they started going woke, with the Danica Patrick crap, and the unfounded “noose in the pit area” saga. They have also gotten away from the “win on Sunday, sell on Monday” motto, as the cars they run now are nothing like what is being sold in the showroom. Back in the 60’s and 70’s, you could go into a Chrysler, Ford, or GM dealership and buy a Mopar with a 426 Hemi or Wedge motor, or a 427 equipped car from Ford, or a Chevy with a 409 c.i. motor, the cars were basically the same structurally and aesthetically, except for a few changes for safety concerns. Brand loyality was stronger back then. Not now, especially with the electric vehicle debacle that they are forcing down everyone’s throats. People are a little dissatisfied with the automotive industry right now.

Electricity charges the cars battery which then runs the car with that stored electricity, but I get what you are saying. They do have a knack for renaming their shit sandwiches they made for us with deceptive monikers, the whopper of them all was their “Affordable Care Act” otherwise known as Obamacare, where our first gay president said we could keep our Doctors.
