263 Snow Tows
A whopping 263 vehicles were towed on Chicago’s first day of its winter overnight parking ban.
That’s more drivers towed on the first day of the winter parking ban than in each of the past three years. Last year, 242 cars were towed, while 186 were towed in 2021 and 232 were hauled away in 2020, according to the Chicago Department of Streets and Sanitation. The yearly ban, in effect between 3 a.m. and 7 a.m. from Dec. 1 to April 1, is enforced regardless of whether there is snow.
Violators are charged with a minimum $150 towing fee, a $60 ticket and a $25 per day storage fee. Towed vehicles are taken to either 10301 S. Doty Ave. or 701 N. Sacramento Ave.
263 tows at $235 per is almost $62,000.
A paltry sum, but likely 263 more voters pissed off at Blowie, even though it's not his fault.
This was amusing though, and shows once again, there are no actual reporters at the Slum Times:
- The annual parking ban was implemented after major snowstorms in 1967 and 1979 that caused substantial traffic congestion.
In 1967, the blizzard rolled in 26/27 January. In 1979, it was 13/14 January. Meaning that there really is no historical reason - aside from a money grab - that the parking ban takes place 01 December, especially when it was 51 degrees earlier this week. The Slum Times just prints whatever press release comes out of City Hall.

There is never a significant amount of snow this early in the year. City totally trying to make money on people parking downtown. So, so, wrong!

The politician caculation formula:
1. Determine the plausible purpose of the grift, presented to the peasants with the usual slick words, with a smidgeon of mumbo jumbo 'proving' the neccessity of same.
2. Figure out, based on the preceeding, how to maximize the grift swag flow. (In this case, stretch out the number of days the grift is imposed. The no need for there to be snow accumulation, not even predicted snowfall, is key to the maximizing.)
3. Release the Dogs of Revenue!!!
After all, better safe, with ample grift swag, then not with ample grift swag......
City needs more snow routes. That 62k ain't shit. Not enough dough to pay the dirty Sanchez his rent.

It's amazing that anyone buys the Times and Trib anymore. Only a half-wit would believe anything printed in them.

I was having breakfast early today and over heard a conversation of two older gentleman who were extremely upset that their wife's car were towed. One of them came out and before the tow driver drove away he pleaded with the man to drop his wife's car. Supposedly the drive stated "I have kids to feed" and drove off. A third gentleman joined their conversation and said "I think it's time the city is left without tow trucks". I wonder what he meant? I have no clueless. Can anyone tell me.

Many of the tow trucks are private companies who get paid from the city on the amount of vehicles they tow. Of course they have to kick back to the politicians in the form of campaign contributions, and manila envelopes.
I guess buying Vehicle City Stickers dont mean shit. ( I know, never did) but wasn't the whole idea of it so you can park on the public way?

This is racist. Why wasn’t equity applied here? Why were there more cars towed in white neighborhoods vs Asian, Hispanic, Indian, Eskimo and privileged west and south side neighborhoods?
I’m still pissed that the feb 21 2021 storm didn’t have any tows walking down western in 12” snow shoveling hydrants out every last one had a car parked on it. If you don’t use it for actual snow storms but only to make money and only on 12/1 it’s a fake snow route.
SSC, I am not 100% positive that this is correct but the money for the tow and storage fees goes right to the tow company. The city gets the leftovers. If so, thats a sweet deal. Hum, I wonder if the tow company are linked to a politician? NO, we are in Chicago, what was I /thinking.

I would like to see the areas where most of these towed vehicles occurred. Are they in Black areas or mostly White areas? Johnson seems dead set on not being too harsh on black people with fines and traffic stops etc.
On one hand anyone living in Chicago hears this story every year like clockwork, and should know the snow routes in their neighborhoods.
On the other hand, to break the recent towing records likely means that the tow service was enforced with brutal malice and forthought...They had to be waiting in the wings as the clock struck the hour. It's all about revenue people...

Any break down on the streets that these 263 cars were captured or does that info need a FOIA? I’m assuming that 90% of the them were downtown or on the north/northeast side. Since ‘ticketing is racist,’ streets like Independence Blvd., Stony Island, Cottage Grove, MLK, Wentworth, etc., were all given a pass….

Street cleaning bullshit is even worse. Once the leaves start to fall you don't see any street cleaner in site. It's a money and power scam. When a street cleaner does roll by what happens to the dirt other than blow it around.
It's BULLSHIT! Getting a parking ticket in front of your home because the city couldn't blow the dirt in the air and squirt a little water on the pavement after then all the dirt just falls back into place. Rain does a better job

As a patrolman in 017 during the 90's, I had the honor of working for a Sgt who did what was right. Every night after Dec 1st he tried to drive the snow routes before the trucks got there. He used the orange screen PDT's and a phone book to track down vehicle owners so they could move them before getting towed.
