Surveillance video shows the last moments of a street fight in Austin that ended when Chicago police opened fire as a man refused to stop stabbing another man, officials said.
The shots hit both men, killing the attacker and wounding the person who was being stabbed, according to a statement released by Chicago police. The person was taken to Stroger Hospital in critical condition.
That's the trouble with shooting someone who's busy stabbing his victim - collateral damage. But the only other option is to watch him stab the victim to death, then be accused of (A) doing nothing or (B) shooting the assailant after he stopped being an assailant and was just about to surrender.

Channel 9 on Wednesday morning reported that 11th District Officers had residents out for ice cream on Tuesday. That’s a novel approach to police work in this day and age. I suppose it’s got as much chance of working as what they’ve got us doing under the Consent Decree. Wonder if we’ll have to document each person who had a scoop and what flavor they had? When someone is shot and survives, it should be classified as a " failed murder" because that is exactly what it is. Only by God's grace did that shooting victim not die.

There's always one of you. How many people have you shot while they were actively stabbing someone? The range doesn't have armed moving targets actively stabbing a victim, who would also be moving in response to being stabbed. No matter how much practice you get, you can't predict where two people actively engaged in a knife fight will be when your shot arrives. The only real way to make sure both people don't get hit is to not take the shot. This wasn't a sniper waiting for the perfect moment to shoot. This was someone shooting quickly to stop a guy who was actively stabbing another person. Waiting for the perfect shot means waiting for him to finish killing his victim. If I'm being stabbed, I'd rather be accidentally shot by someone stopping the stabbing than stabbed to death. Ideally, only the bad guy gets shot, but that's not how it always works out, regardless of range time. I know you'll disagree, but I also know you'll never be able to prove your idiotic belief that more range time would've resulted in a different outcome. You'll also never convince me you did a better job in the same situation, because you haven't been in this situation.

SOB! Easy-Peasy! But I do not remember that subject matter being taught at the academy. I do remember being in the parking lot and practicing the Starsky and Hutch butt-slide across the hood of a car in order to catch bad guys. That was cool!
