6,500?

Interesting comment earlier yesterday:

  • ....the goal is permanent 12 hr days and 6,500 police and it’s coming soon

We say "interesting" because this was discussed here over a decade ago where the rumor was that 9.5's desire was a replica of Houston, a city similar in size to Chicago, but with only about half the Police manpower.

Texas has a very large County Sheriff presence across the state however, which stood in for the Houston PD numbers. In fact, LA is run similarly with a number of major departments within the boundaries of Los Angeles proper and a significant CHP presence.

Chicago doesn't have that in terms of County sheriffs nor ISP.

Discuss.

Lateraled from a relatively quiet 12 hr burb to CPD. Midnights, 6p-6a and checkoff is 5 minutes before shift ends not an hour 30. Working three 12’s in a row was brutal. Might be doable on days. But I cannot imagine humping calls for 12 hours in Chicago and catching a late DUI or domestic before checkoff. Our 4-2 schedule is godsend.

If we do go to 12 hour days, it better not be some 2 on 2 of nonsense. A 4 on 4 off followed by 4 on 3 off wouldn't be that bad.

The Democrats believe in alternatives to conventional policing. Watch for more social service programs that replace the rank and file. They can funnel more of the monies into programs and NGOs. Then they get the kickbacks, the donations and jobs to give out which are favorable to the party. It’s easier to steal the money from these programs than if they put it into the police department. In fact the police don’t do anything for the party, they are just a liability.

McNulty says
I call total BS … city doesn’t have enough equipment to go to a 12 hour day. Cars and radios are in short demand now when watches overlap DNC a perfect example. How would it even be possible to man a radio for example on zone 12 in the summer months when everyone and their mother is out on the streets responding to absolute nonsense calls. Mental health and officer wellness will go straight out the window. All time off will need to be adjusted. furlos time due BF days will all need a total revamp. Chasing the radio for 12 hours in a busy district is just not feasible. This has been a rumor for years and no one sees it happening. It’s a logistical nightmare. 20 years ago there were so many officers working the watch secretaries had no where to put the new guys because every beat car and extra car was manned. Where did all that equipment and vehicles go ? We all know the answer. Just let that sink in and think about it.

We would only get a redundant bureaucracy because each agency is run by a differing tribe of the Democratic party of Illinois.
Plus there would have to be a procedure policy overlay across any cooperating agency's.
Plus nobody will want to really cut their administrative budget nowould they?

Let us not forget the numbers of officers murdered in Texas.
There are times when more is better, there are times when less is better.
More officers are a necessity, now more then ever. Twelve hours is too long
of a work day for any human who must be at the ready every minute.

Remember dumbocRATs don’t ask the Why or How, just the What. Such as, What, Huston only needs half the police? Not How can they mange and Why does it seem to work for them.

Sadly if this ever comes to fruition in Chicago, the budget savings won’t go to the pensions, or to lower property taxes, but to buy votes from all the non-contributors to society.

I’m assuming Houston and LA also have competent Sherifs departments.
If you think our current crop of recruits is bad, what do you think Cook County is running through its hiring process? You really want Cook County taking patrols in Chicago? Good lord.

Also, Houston seems to have a larger number of non-sworn civilian staff member too, which may not be a bad thing depending on what they are doing.
But I can see a lot of spots in Chicago that can safely and logistically be filled by non-sworn members. Problem is, those spots are used as a bone to throw to DEI coppers or pin cushions.
Taking away a connected coppers plumb spot and sending them back to the street so a civilian can do it will be something that gets a lot of push-back. Necessary, but won’t be easy to get done.

I worked in a 12 hour department prior to coming to CPD. Every other weekend was either working Fri Sat Sun or you were off Fri Sat Sun. It's great with no family or responsibilities. I think it would be really hard with any family life or trying to get kids to/from school. 3rd watch was the smallest watch and worked 3p-3a. Other hours were 7-7 with a a morning car from 6-6 to cover the overlap with midnights/days. You also have to throw in commute time for Chicago and the whole handling of jobs near the end of the shift has to culturally change. We did not stay all the time to finish a job. Another car was assigned and you might handle the case report and the other car would process the arrest. You can't get a late arrest on a 12 hour tour and expect to work another 4-6 hours then turn around and be back that night for your next tour of duty. The days off each month were great. 15 days off a month. Court is brutal when working midnights. Imagine working 7p-7a, court from 9-1 then being back at work at 7p for another 12 hour tour.

If goal is to reduce policing to reporting after-the-fact episodes of crime, because prosecution and detention of criminals is no longer progressive's acceptable concept of needed public-safety services, then just open self-report kiosks at local police stations. Crime-victims, if so old-fashioned as to need to report crime, or in need of police-report for insurance claim purposes, can obtain their self-prepared official report. Murder victims, and assault victims to enfeebled to come themselves, can be represented by a family member or friend. Chaos can ensue on streets of Chicago, but cost-savings can be realized by sharp reduction in police force manpower count.

Ditto for fire department, self-reports after fire for insurance purposes, and arson separately declassified as crime. Fire victims prepare self-report fire episode report for insurance purposes, if victim has no property insurance exists, then no report needed. Fire ambulance service is terminated. And again, fire department manpower can be sharply reduced.

This should leave plenty of budgetary dollars for the "do nothing" administrative and community activist jobs necessary to wholesale purchase votes from underserved (under-educated) communities for folks who likely couldn't retain a job in private-sector world.

Retired in 2018. Moved to Texas in 19. Texas has a constable program. People in a neighborhood can vote to pay a tax to pay for their own police force. Sworn personnel with full police powers. People in these areas usually call the constable before they dial 911. Of course this program has been vilified by liberals as racist, slave posse's, elitest since po' folks can't afford them. Yes anything that keeps people safe is racist. Anything that works must be destroyed. We have a strong Red State here. Republicans don't roll over, over here. This is why they tried flooding Texas with illegals. To turn Texas blue. God bless Greg Abbot for shipping them to Illinois.

9/11/2024 09:58:00 AM

The City will grant us the pleasure of working 4 days straight then three days off. 48 hours a week. Only 2 shifts, days and midnights. 40% of manpower to days (minus 20% for management), 60% to midnights. So, unless you are in the top 20% manpower, you will be on midnights for a very very long time. No increase in V hours, your furloughs will be shorter.

If it is similar to university of Chicago Police Department, every other weekend off. Tough work week , but has benefits. Just ensure the contract read triple time for every day off cancellation. Use Citywide seniority. In 16 ,low on seniority, might be traveling to Roseland if nobody volunteered for the triple time. 12 hour personal days,BFD equal extra money if you use the days.

I’m right next door to Chicago working the 12 hr schedule. It’s tough on the 3 day weekends but over all I love the schedule. I left Chicago a few years back. I worked there weeks in a row with no time off. You may get less jobs but you handle all of them. I broke the afternoon shift from not taking calls at the beginning of their shift causing me to be on OT often (15-30 mins a day). The contract says u can only work an additional 6 hours with your 12 hour days. Only. I live for my days off. 7 out of 14 every two weeks. At least in Chicago you have over lapping shifts for others to get the jobs. Give you a break. I’d rather be busy all day to make the day fly by. Slow days are the worst. We break up our days into 6 hr shifts on a beat. Then the next 6 hours you have new scenery. Everyone cried when Chicago went to the 4 and 2s. That’s a good schedule. No one would ever go back to the 6 and 2 unless they loved suffering. The change is good. If you work an rdo, it’s better money. The way the 12 hr schedule is set up, take 2 days off at the right time every other week, your off 7 days in a row. Pay me!!! No get rid of the Chicago Residency Rule. See how good life can be living out of Cook County. Use those public schools and don’t work so much to put kids thru private education. F**k CPS.
