Quick Thinking

A feel-good story:

  • An Illinois officer is being hailed as a hero after he jumped into action within minutes when a pregnant woman called 911 to say her brakes had suddenly stopped working and she was quickly approaching a lake.

The Williamson County Sheriff's office said it received a 911 call from a driver who said her vehicle "would not stop" early Monday morning.

Officers caught up to the woman, who said she was on her way to pick up a relative from work, as she traveled westbound on old route 13 at Division Street near Carterville in downstate Illinois.

"The vehicle had brake lights visibly activated however, the vehicle was not decelerating and continued traveling at approximately 30 miles per hour," the sheriff's office wrote on social media.

The Officers were able to direct the woman to an airport runway and she drove in circles until they were able to distract the mad bomber with.....no wait, that was a movie we saw once.

They were able to get in front of her car and slow her down with a controlled bumper-to-bumper collision and bring her to a halt. Quick thinking all around.

Our Traffic Review Baord would have labeled it "Preventable" and handed out a three day suspension along with Driving School.

What is so difficult about shifting to neutral and coasting to a stop using the emergency brake

This is why (most) women shouldn’t be in charge of anything of importance.

Listening to her call to 911 was ridiculous. Anyone who has ever driven a car and possesses a lick of common sense, upon their brakes “failing”, would know to: 1) take your hoof off the skinny pedal, (2) manually downshift and/or row it into “N”, (3) throw the car into “R” or “P” once it was close to idling speed (parking awl be damned!), (4) engage the emergency brake and 5) if needed at this point, gently steer into the shoulder/guard rail/fixed object to bring the car to a complete stop.

Watch the video… she was doing all of 10-15 mph when the coppers contained her… IF THAT.

And as far as “she was less than half mile from winding up in the lake”? Pppffftttt!!!! Ppppppuuuuhhhhlllleeeeaaaasssssseeeee!!! If someone old enough to drive can’t figure out how to stop a “runaway” passenger car moving at a speed people regularly exceed on bicycles whose brakes have failed 🙄, they probably deserve to wind up in a lake. Stupid needs to hurt.

Prediction: this feel good holiday story is debunked as fake when the investigation is finished.

Pfft. There's a bumper-to-bumper collision in every CPD district lot at least once a week now. These Gen-Z PPOs can't drive for s***. We can't chase anymore but yet our squad car fleet looks horrendous. Apparently the same CPS teachers that were teaching them reading and writing were also driver's ed instructors

Remember an officer working 99 handling an accident pulled over to the side of the road with blue lights on. Back then we were still writing traffic crash reports on paper. A car with a trailer changed lanes to get around the squad car and the trailer popped off the hitch somehow and rolled into the squad car. The commander made it a preventable accident.

shift the car into neutral, let it glide to a stop.

Good job deputies! If this was a Chicago unclouted beat officer. CPD would fire them. The lady would sue civilly. City would settle and unemployed officer be on every news network. I’ll stick to the general orders instead. Just notify marine unit for recovery, call the dics and medical examiner.
