"Where is the Glock?"

A "turned in gun" goes missing - again???

  • On a typically brisk day in December 2023, a throng of people gathered in the basement of St. Sabina Church in Auburn Gresham to hand over hundreds of guns.

The scene was similar to dozens of other gun buyback events held at the Catholic parish, where more than 5,100 guns have been exchanged for gift cards over the last 19 years, more than any other location in the city.

That day was marked by excitement, confusion and ultimately chaos after one cop inventorying the weapons at a police station noticed something unusual. A Glock handgun that cops had been admiring was missing.

A tag identifying the gun had been slipped onto another one, and an envelope for that gun was soon found in the trash. In an office full of cops assigned to inventory the guns and keep them secure, someone had walked off with the Glock.

The article goes on to report that this isn't the first time this happened:

  • The lost weapon’s journey mirrored an earlier event in which a gun turned in by a Cook County judge disappeared from another buyback in Chicago — only to resurface at a fatal police shooting in Cicero, as the Better Government Association and Chicago Sun-Times reported in 2017.

After that report, the city launched an investigation that lasted more than five years. But investigators decided it would be “difficult and unwise” to question everyone involved in the buyback. So they didn’t interview anyone.

"...unwise..."

We all know what that means. You don't ask questions if you don't want to know the answers.

In this most recent case, a sergeant took a day. No one else got dinged. Shortcuts were implemented to the inventory process and someone managed to circumvent the shortened process.

How about going back to the tried and true method, add in a layer of visual inspection by two individuals, both signing the gun envelope before sealing it, and then put it in a one way flap on an armored box or armored truck or something that can only be opened at ERPS? The Department has done it with how many tons of dope behind the Desk for years.

SCC.. this is well known and I think I remember seeing it in the comments a few months back. Someone connected from 006 tac walked off with that gun.. a female and a family member or boyfriend ended up getting caught with the gun weeks later.. it’s some variation of that but I know people from 006 know the story so I don’t wanna mess up the details. Anyone from 006 care to fill us in?

If 2017 was "$3.5M," "extremely abnormal and troublesome," along with "difficult and unwise," how much worser will this one be when it floats to the surface? Did Cicero send Chicago a bill for their payout?

Hickory Dickery Dock A Cop Ran Off With A Glick?

Although there is evidence of potential violations of the statutes regarding the handling of guns turned in, our judgment is that no reasonable prosecutor would bring such a case. Prosecutors necessarily weigh a number of factors before bringing charges. There are obvious considerations, like the strength of the evidence, especially regarding intent. Responsible decisions also consider the context of a person’s actions, and how similar situations have been handled in the past.

In looking back at our investigations into mishandling or removal guns that were turned in , we cannot find a case that would support bringing criminal charges on these facts. All the cases prosecuted involved some combination of: clearly intentional and willful mishandling of GUNS or vast quantities of materials exposed in such a way as to support an inference of intentional misconduct; or indications of disloyalty to the United States; or efforts to obstruct justice. We do not see those things here.

To be clear, this is not to suggest that in similar circumstances, a person who engaged in this activity would face no consequences. To the contrary, those individuals are often subject to security or administrative sanctions. But that is not what we are deciding now.

As a result, although the Department of Justice makes final decisions on matters like this, we are expressing to Justice our view that no charges are appropriate in this case.

I know there will be intense public debate in the wake of this recommendation, as there was throughout this investigation. What I can assure the American people is that this investigation was done competently, honestly, and independently. No outside influence of any kind was brought to bear. Because it was an inside job!!

Gun gone missing in police custody? I remember an federal felon ( Betty Loren Maltese) had an visit from her parole agent in Vagas. Agents found an glock 40 in her closet under a pair of jean, trace serial number goshes.
It belong to mwrd police Stickney plant, the same police dept that had a drinking room. After federal agents did a thorough investigation better than mwrd pd a sgt "of same heritage" took permanent vacation ie ret. Sgt are responsible for dept weapons no discipline if connected free to skate.

I once had an off duty gun taken and did a theft report. I made sure I printed a copy. When I got home my Commander called me to say my report had been revised to say it was a “lost” weapon. I told my commander I didn’t lose it and knew why it was changed. Why? Because there was a Commander and a Captain in the area and that would have meant a blanket cr on everyone there including bosses. I said I’ll take the hit but know this I have an approved copy of my original with a time stamp, so I hope “ I don’t suffer” any repercussions. McCarthy was Super and had increased all punishments so I was given 10 days. The commander said just take time or use vdays or baby furloughs. I said I’m not giving this department my time. I’ll take the days I’m not a deadbeat I have money. In fact Commander I’m going to the Bahamas for the week and did.

There’s no video in stations other than lockup. Older stations you’re lucky if you have a fully functional bathroom. And fingerprint the envelope? This isn’t the movies. And even if you could get prints, how many people handled that envelope? Probably a whole bunch of people. But I will agree, if the Glock was stolen and not simply mishandled, yah, whoever the shitbag is needs criminal charges, if for nothing else for being a moron.

I’ve seen this film before and I didn’t like the ending. Anyone else out there remember the story of the rifle that was inventoried in 014 sans the scope it was recovered with? It happened long ago and might have been part of the Johnny R. series of incidents/scandal to plague the district during the Joe, forgive me, “Jose” Velez tenure. For years afterward the involved parties were periodically summoned to appear before federal grand jury’s-yep, you read that right, “federal” grand jury’s-often to merely sit all day outside the jury room to think upon their sins without ever being called to testify. Funny how much better you sleep if you’re not a thief.

This way if the gun was returned by a judge the next copper would have a idea, it not the first time as a recovery.

So, you had an "off-duty gun taken"? How was it taken? From your department locker? Any signs of a break-in? Was an ET ordered? Was your gun in a safe in your locker? Or was your gun in the locker for a period of time unseen and then one day you noticed it missing and assumed someone stole it? Why did you leave it in your locker? Don't say your locker is a safe place with a $6 gym lock on it either. If you leave your gun in your locked car and someone breaks in to steal it, you are still taking 10 days if it is unsecured. If someone breaks into your house and steals your gun from your sock drawer, you are taking 10 days (read the orders).

Your Commander can change the UCR code if the narrative doesn't justify a theft UCR. Sergeants and lieutenants change UCRs everyday.

Your story doesn't add up. Your commander telling you he changed the UCR code "to avoid a blanket CR" sounds too chummy and why would he tell you that? Commanders don't say that to POs unless he was testing you. He probably thought your story was BS, and when you didn't push back at having the UCR changed, you confirmed his suspicion, especially when you said you didn't want to take a hit for him changing the UCR. But he didn't want to go to the trouble of accusing you of filing a false report, which would be a lot more paperwork.

Don't forget for a second that just as POs have heard a lot of BS on the street, that some supervisors (the better ones) have a heard alot of BS from those they supervise.

Glad you had a good trip to the Bahamas.

Sounds like you work in a busy district in a bad neighborhood where people, folks, or coworkers steal guns from police officers, and commanders are so busy that they would rather a hard-working PO take 10 days suspension than do a "blanket CR", order an ET, review cameras, etc., to catch the culprit.

Do you work in 006?

As hiring standards go down, events like this will go up. I feel sorry for the police when they can't trust those they work with.

There's only a limited number of officers who had access to the Glock. Being on that team, I would want a full investigation either to clear the integrity of the team or to find out which ones can't be trusted.

Not bs. It wasn’t deleted it was amended using the same RD. I printed the copy after the lt. approved it in front of me on the 3rd watch. Lt. C. I the had a call from the commander who informed my the area deputy had the report changed to a lost weapon. Commander C and Captain P one black one white irish along with other officers in the building would have gotten a cr and we can’t have that. Went down to IAD where they asked me if I had anything I want to say. What could I say it was my responsibility and my failure. I’ll take the hit and it will always remind me why I don’t trust anyone on the department and still don’t.
