Lowest April since 1962

Chicago finished this past month with 20 murders, according to data available as of Thursday afternoon. A WBEZ analysis shows that’s the lowest count of any April since 1962.
The city’s 116 murders through this year’s first four months mark the lowest January-through-April tally since 2014. Even if the city’s violence intensifies during summer, as it traditionally does, Chicago appears on pace to hit Mayor Brandon Johnson’s goal for 2025 to have fewer than 500 murders, making it the quietest year in a decade.
And Conehead comes right out and claims credit:
“Everybody agrees that we’re not going to police our way to safety, that we have to make sure that we’re building affordable homes, providing opportunities for our young people, ensuring that there’s behavior and mental health support services,” Johnson told reporters Monday in Chicago at a U.S. Conference of Mayors meeting on public safety.
“It’s not just about more police officers. It’s not about just simply better technology,” Johnson said. “It’s also about making sure that we’re taking the full force of government towards creating safer communities.”
Not the police, and not ShotSpotter technology.
We could speculate that it might be all the money being spent on "alternative" strategies is simply being used to bribe the right gang leaders to keep a lid on the day-to-day violence. We might even blame it on climate change.
But anyone paying attention knows exactly why homicides are down in Chicago, and nationwide:

Crime is down in Chicago for 2 reasons, the exodus of African Americans back to the South and excellent (almost too good) work by the paramedics. Every decade since 1980 the census has revealed 100,000 blacks have left Chicago every decade. The population of Chicago is shrinking due to this, as are the murders.
I think part of it is the ganbangers best friend and compatriot isn't in the prosecutors office anymore, nor could they get another idiot elected. But watch the signs out there. Crime is moving to the surrounding suburbs. Not sure Chicago has anything left to steal.

Having lost someone in a senseless street shooting in Lincoln Pk., I sure hope murders continue to trend downward. I hope that the Presidents actions on immigration, border security, and his declaration (and treatment) of cartels as terrorist organizations ARE having an affect. But I’ve lived in this city for 65 years. It’s going to take more than a colder than usual spring and one months murder number to make me a believer.
AND if the actions of the Whitehouse actually ARE reducing murder victims…..in a mere 100 days. Then the midterm elections are going to be crucial. Whoever the smart democrat leaders out there are, they are focusing on locating districts that can be flipped. The democrats combined with the media will be relentless. Two reasons for "drop" in murder rate in April 2025, neither connected to Conehead's so-called "leadership initiatives":
1) April had unusually cold and rainy weather. Even Chicago's criminal element gets fussy about bad weather.
2) Paramedics and Hospital Trauma Units have vastly increased survivability from major trauma injuries, including injured folks with multiple gunshot and/or stabbing wounds. Our Trauma Units are excellent, and sole reason Chicago's murder rate seems down even while violent crime rate remains steadfastly high.
Chicago is still Murder Capital of USA. Still sucks to be walking around most parts of city by yourself, particularly at night. Still not a safe city, nor a well-governed city.

Only Chicago would celebrate such an abysmal homicide rate. The even sadder part of the story is that only around 20 percent of these murders will be solved. Even fewer will be charged, and even less will be convicted and jailed.

500 murders is not anything to brag about. New York City with 200-300 murders during the Giuliani years is what Chicago should achieve. Remember, NYC has a population of 8 million. So, if we extrapolate, Chicago needs to get down to 70 - 105 murders a year. But we all know that broken windows style of policing will never come to Chicago.
Crime is down, the police can be de-funded.
