Body Cam Proves Useful

In reality, they've turned out far more useful than we had expected.

But even we never anticipated this one:

  • A sheriff’s deputy in Volusia County, Florida, is recovering after being shot in the leg and shoulder while responding to a battery call Monday night.

Volusia County Sheriff Mike Chitwood said Deputy José Rivera’s body camera likely saved his life, as one of the bullets hit the camera “dead center” and ricocheted through Rivera’s shoulder.

“If you’re in a gun battle in that distance, there is no room except for divine intervention,” the sheriff said during a press conference Monday night.

The sheriff’s office changed to a new model of body camera six months ago. Their previous bodycams were worn on their shoulders, while the newer model is worn in the center of their chests.

Maybe a camera made out of ceramic-plate-body-armor could have absorbed more of the impact?

Still, count your blessings and be sure to play the lottery this weekend Officer.

Initially I didn’t like the BWC. After much observation and thought I’ve come around to the benefit the camera can on police work, both professionally and personally.
St. Michael was there for that cop.

The camera caused the ricochet. If no camera, the vest would have handled the bullet. F the cameras

Yeah but if it missed the camera, would have hit the vest. So because of the camera the bullet penetrated his shoulder instead of bruising his chest.

Sheriff Chitwood. The real deal . A no nonsense guy who still carries a revolver because when he was involved in a shootout back in the day witnessed a semi jam.

I would consider that a picture perfect moment.

Yep, sue the camera maker for the injury caused by their device.

Lawsuit. The camera was at fault for the injury.

I live here. Don’t get between Chitwood and a tv camera. Daytona had two events, Monster Truck Week, over 1000 tickets issued. Orange Crush black event, zero tickets issued, despite dine and dash, shootings, traffic violations. Hell, Chitwood was on A1A twerking with the best of them.
You want a good Sheriff, Grady is your guy.

Days LT in 015 would have sparred the officer for the broken camera even though it wasn’t his fault. SMH

Body cams were supposed to find misconduct. When they couldn’t find any misconduct they decided to use them to punish for petty procedural shit.

I put my body cam in the microwave for 2 minutes. it works wonders. it goes on and off all the time green red green red green red, sporadically, like my brain. I just walk around in circles at work and talk to myself. oh crap, I am late for my e.a.p. appointment, gotta go.
