Nationwide Shortage
We've been commenting on the shortages for years now.
L.A. is putting numbers out there:
The Los Angeles Police Department’s officer shortage has gone from bad to worse — with the city’s top cop revealing that he has lost hundreds of officers in recent months while trying bolster the beleaguered force by a staggering 4,000 more.
LAPD Chief Jim McDonnell exclusively told The California Post that the department’s uniformed force currently stands at about 8,550, down about 200 officers from February when the LAPD had more than 8,700 cops.
McDonnell also revealed that the LAPD currently needs about 12,500 cops to ideally safeguard the city, updating a previous estimate of about 12,000 officers that he cited to the Post in February.
That's what....a 33% shortage, give or take a few?
Always the blue city / blue state $hitholes.

Most districts running skeleton crews all summer, with mostly 99 units.
On the other hand, I've never seen skeleton desk crews.
According to the TV show The Rookie, it's possible for the same handful of LA uniform cops to cover Vice, SWAT, undercover, Narco, Hostage Negotiation, etc. Basically, everything!
Any chance LAPD will start advertising on billboards here in Illinois to get officers to transfer? Florida did it a few years back…
You mean no one wants a job in a shit hole blue city where criminals are allowed to shoot at you, shoot you, stab you, beat you, fight with you and not pull over on a traffic stop and can ruin your life if you shoot or fight back? Shocking.

Smells like residency might become a big talking point in the future for new Mayors !!! I know most will say that it will never happen, but if the dept. can't hire enough willing to live in the city then what choice do they have ??? Keep lowering the standard of officer untill they start accepting convicted felon ??
Los Angeles has the benefit of a very good and strong county sheriff's department. I don't think the LAPD ever had more than 9000 on their department, but what they seem to always have had was great leadership, unlike the CPD. Their former chief, Charlie Beck was here for 6 months and made some great reforms and proposed even more. He left and Lightfoot and Brown reversed everything and plunged the CPD right back into patronage heaven .
And you never will or other inside spots. All the rooms will be filled
They need to bring back Harry Bosch. He can do the work of 4000.

Luscious Gushes was making frequent trips to LAPD. She was overly impressed with their "oversight" of petty bullshit. Vowed it would be coming to CPD, and sure enough they are slowly getting there. She's not so much to blame as these "think tanks" like CALEA and PERF pushing "reform" and collecting millions in consultation $$.
Waddya mean? A shit California economy, highest gas prices in the country. expensive rents, overpriced real estate, people shitting on the sidewalks and millions of illegals. All of this comes with the added benefit of the shittiest and stupid politicians in the country. They make Chicagos idiots look like geniuses. California used to be place you wanna be, but you loaded up the trucks and moved to.....FLORIDA.
They will once again lower the hiring standards even lower than what they are now.

Back in the day you’d have 200 or more people take the civil service test in the suburbs and the agency wasn’t even hiring. CPD had thousands testing. I don’t see interest in the job improving anytime soon, if ever. Sad

Communist LA is as bad or worse then Chicago. The socialist community does not support and hate the police. The residents could have voted for Pratt, but the citizens voted for the two commies. The community gets when they deserve. Florida supports LE.
Civilian here. Apologies if it's been posted on SCC recently, but does anyone have a current number count on how many sworn officers in the CPD?
LAPD is actually worse than CPD. My relative worked there for 5 years before leaving for a suburban LA department.
I Blame FOP,PBPA for failing to post the shortage on billboards,on television and radio. stress the poor police protection that citizens in Chicago receive, Let them know how aldermen, mayor and other politicians have cpd as bodyguards. Do a survey, do you want your district to have 6 to 10 CAPS officers or another 6 to 10 beat cars.

Even just back in December of 2013 we had 27000(three zeros) applicants at Mccormick over 2 days. Last few years the entrance exam is completed remotely online. Each year recruiting young bodies is becoming more difficult. Can’t blame public perception but rather the job sucks major ass now with the implementation of BWC's, rules and restrictions. But it is a decent paycheck and decent health insurance plan, that’s all.

1: medical, Sgt’s are not driving to Palatine to check on an officer and that department is not going to sends officers to do it for Cpd.
2: any time the police are called to an officers house for something say a simple argument between a couple, it’ll be labeled domestic trouble, in the suburbs they document the shit out of it and will send it over to CPD. Times that by 100’s a year and that’s more shit they have to dig for and investigate.
In short, keeping the officers in the city allows for the city to control and keep things under wraps.
Nah you don’t want residency lifted. Your house value and quality of neighbors will plummet.
