Less than two hours after 17-year-old Javar Woods returned home from a stint at the Cook County juvenile detention center on May 21, he shot 13-year-old Deantwan McKeever while the two were stealing a car together, prosecutors allege.
Felled by a single shot to his forehead, McKeever lay alone in a South Chicago gangway for roughly 24 minutes before someone finally called 911 on his behalf, officials say. Until Mayor Brandon Johnson deactivated the city’s ShotSpotter network in September 2024, the technology could have alerted first responders to the gunfire even if no one else did.
