So What's the Actual Problem?
This might be a bit dark, but there need to be more prisons like this:
Around 10 p.m., a haze of gray smoke wafted down a hallway lined with prison cells at the Joliet Treatment Center. The window of cell A9 began to glow red as the fire within grew. Jason Stephens was locked inside. Minutes ticked by, and the smoke became so thick you could not see more than a few feet. No one came to let Stephens out.
There have been more than 70 fires at the facility in the last three years, according to an investigation by The Marshall Project, WBEZ and the Chicago Sun-Times. That includes a dozen cases in which men incarcerated there set themselves on fire.
The Joliet Treatment Center opened in 2017 with the promise of being a new kind of prison in Illinois, designed to provide intensive mental health treatment. But in the years leading up to that night in the summer of 2024, incarcerated men and civil rights lawyers who visited the facility said the conditions declined. Men were kept locked in their cells for long stretches, with nothing to do. They complained about a lack of medical care and mental health treatment, which the prison system is legally obligated to provide. Men reported that guards used excessive force.
As the men grew more despondent, some became willing to do anything to draw attention to their troubles and resorted to setting their cells — or themselves — on fire.
Sounds like a win.
Prison is supposed to be restrictive and depressing so that inmates don't want to return to it and they make the effort to not go back.
If they do go back - and the recidivism rate seems to imply a lot of them do - then the prison obviously didn't make a bad enough impression on them so that they improve their lives, get jobs and contribute to society.
Self immolation seems like a decent outcome....for the taxpayer at least.

Fukkem, get them away from the public trough
Outsource our prisons, particularly ones that hold long-term or never-getting-out prisoners to Mexico.
fooomp! there he goes....
Ok...I humming that song...
Come on baby lite my fire....
How's a little fire, Scarecrow?
Very well said, SCC! (as always)
oh boo hoo..these assholes have it better in jail than on the streets...what do they think jail is ...the Raddison Hotel?
Better they light themselves on fire than some poor person sitting on a CTA train minding their own business.
It's a win for the taxpayer ONLY if the inmate does a good job and makes sure the job is complete!
equal rights !! I get burned out at work,, they get burned out in prison
Where’s the problem?
I’m surprised you haven’t seen prison cells advertised on vrbo in certain states. It’s an all inclusive for free. So these guys are just trying to call attention to the state that they should have the opportunity also to enjoy the same benefits. These conditions are probably better than what their usual situation is It’s like a furlough for them. Some take a baby furlough, some a segment and some even retire there with full benefits.
Now this is something Priitzker should take credit for in his campaign
Is Governor Jelly Belly Pigster going to make a commercial on what a success Joliet is?
Now, kees me you fool!!!!
It's about one hundred five today here in Texas, nice and sunny. Texas prisons have NO air conditioning. Probably about 130 degrees in there. Guys do time here and don't EVER want to go back. Many, many times I've had assholes cuffed to the wall in Chicago and they would tell you they didn't mind going to the joint since they had family and fellow gang members in there. Two hots and a cot. Since they were cockroaches they had nowhere to go anyway other than sleeping on a park bench. Prison was a nice place to go for the winter or better than dodging bullets on the street.. NOT HERE IN TEXAS. Texas makes it a VERY unpleasant stay. Yes, they do have chain gangs here. They don't give a shit about your complaints. The media here try to raise hell about civil rights for inmates AND TEXAS STILL DON'T GIVE A SHIT. NO FUCKS GIVEN. It used to be people would escape prison and run to Mexico. THAT WOULD BE WORSE . MEXICAN CARTELS ARE MUCH WORSE THAN NO AIR CONDITIONING...BETTER YOU GO TO ILLINOIS TO COMMIT CRIME. CRIME IS LEGAL IN ILLINOIS.
We do need more mental health facilities. They can focus on drug treatment and criminal mental illness. They will create jobs and make society safer. Bring back those fine young men in their fine white coats. They are coming to take me away ha-ha...they are coming to take me away hee-hee.To the funny farm.....
Play with fire, and you're going to get burned.
Yoo-hoo gonna go get me somma dem hot links, somma dem tips, a 40, and have me a ba-ba-q. Prolly get me somma dat crispy critter too, UhUh, dats right.
Crazy people do crazy things🤪
I would pipe-in Martha Stewart videos (home cooking, etc) into the prison cells during waking hours (not 24/7, obviously THAT would be inhuman) and see what that does for recidivism rates ...
Put gasoline in the fire extinguishers
I heard the jail plays Disco Inferno every time it lights up.
Probably was cooking his dinner and cooked his own goose
no but he will be stopping by joliet ill golden corral all you eat buffet
Guard Shack needs some MP3's :-)
AZ Sheriff Arapaio adoped that methodology... Inmates stole the clothes, so he died them all bright pink. No AC, no fans... outside in army tents from the 1950's... No TV.
Judge said they had to have TV, so he got the Weather Channel, and CSPAN 1 and CSPAN2... Tents had some old fans in them too.
NO ONE wanted to come back there...
Fucking democrats couldn't take it so they did all they could to drive the Sheriff out... now they have some pussy sheriff and a crime problem...
Or hire some Russian penology experts to shoe how a prison should be run.
