Newly installed interim Chicago Police Supt. Fred Waller is collecting an annual city taxpayer-funded pension of $141,608 while he has been earning more than $210,648 per year as a deputy director, bringing his total annual compensation to $352,256, according to records obtained by WTTW News.
Waller, 64, has now twice served as CPD’s interim leader, first leading the department from May 2023 to September 2023 before Mayor Brandon Johnson picked Larry Snelling as the city’s top cop. After Snelling took office, Waller stayed on to advise Snelling, serving as deputy director in the superintendent’s office, records show.
Waller has received pension payments of more than $11,500 per month since he retired on Aug. 15, 2020, and they will continue for the rest of his life, according to records obtained by WTTW News from the Policemen’s Annuity and Benefit Fund of Chicago. Annually, Waller’s pension increases by 3% to cover any increase in the cost of living, records show. He received a pension payment in June, according to documents obtained by WTTW News through a Freedom of Information Act request submitted to the police pension fund.

I don’t know anyone who wouldn’t take advantage of the system if they were able. Good for him. Except I look at it as who knows how much time you have left after a full career as law enforcement so I would rather enjoy my retirement. You can’t take the money with you. Only exception is some of these goofs who work full time after retirement and never spend anything. The biggest issue with CPD is the amount of gold stars . Totally unnecessary. Deputy Chief = useless ...... . Captain = useless ..... The number of 9161 's goes down and the gold stars stay the same . Ridiculous..... . Walker good guy but he's nothing special and isn't going things that others can't ..... .

My uncle's pension as a Teamster Auto Carrier driver went bankrupt leaving him and his family almost broke. The federal bailout of his pension left him only about 1/3 of what he was due monthly. Proud hardworking guy, my father and his sister financially helped him and his family monthly untill he passed and his kids finished trade schools. It can happen.

Superintendent Waller , boost morale by eliminating the rank of Captain as Inspector. Assign Sergeants with ten years in patrol as Inspectors.
Promote enough Captains to cover ever watch in a district. Make Captains rotate watches . If not , eliminate the rank and have three lieutenants assigned to every watch .

I disagree; some of our best bosses got there by merit. Merit should be based on qualifications. Some people who score high on tests lack common sense. Some of the smartest people and better cops don’t have a college education. Keep merit but eliminate DEI.

You can have a promotional exam that it’s questions are more geared towards leadership skills and common sense, with those questions carrying more weight, then followed by department directives and law. If the test is created this way you can eliminate merit. For the most part, you are born with leadership skills and common sense, it’s really not something you can study for. You can learn leadership skills but having the ability to apply them at the appropriate time and place is another thing. Make a test like this

While it's public information, most people won't take time to search so the mayor released a list of all names who own second properties. Imagine people being demonized for having lake homes in IN, MI or WI. You still pay for those properties by paying taxes. What the mayor did was put out a hit list for whack jobs to commit violence. Sounds crazy but just wait. The muslim running for senate in MI threatened Senator John Fetterman. The mayor of NY owns property in another country as does the Michigan senate candidate. If residency ends, I seriously doubt most city employees will get screwed. It is much cheaper to live in the city, lower taxes and lower overall home costs. Try and buy a 3 bedroom ranch home that you have in Mt Greenwood selling for about $300 grand in a nice suburb. It will cost way more and your taxes will approach 10 grand.

This might be accurate in some cases, but that is not the point. The promotion system is corrupt and two things can be true at the same time; a corrupt system and some good people promoted in the corrupt system. Don't forget the interim superintendent from LA, Charlie Beck eliminated the merit system that he called corrupt and a morale buster. Lori and Brown brought it back as they grieved the loss of their power. Beck would have been great for the once very good CPD.
