In Courtroom 208 at the Leighton Criminal Courthouse on 26th Street, things run a little differently. Presided over by Judge John Lyke, it is a courtroom where cop killers and other violent crime defendants can embrace their families while victims’ grieving relatives, some of whom will never touch their deceased loved ones again, look on.
The practice is not new.
In April 2023, Steven Montano appeared in Lyke’s courtroom to plead not guilty to the on-duty murder of Chicago Police Officer Andres Vazquez Lasso, whom Montano shot dead near a schoolyard as children took shelter under playground equipment.
During the hearing, Lyke allowed Montano to hug several family members in the gallery, something he specifically orders his deputies to allow — in violation of sheriff’s office regulations.
“I wanted to vomit,” said a now-retired Chicago police officer who was in the courtroom for Montano’s plea hearing. “Literally wanted to vomit. He was rubbing it in the faces of Andres’ family, partner, everyone with a sense of decency. [Lyke] did it on purpose.”
Not only did Lyke have the aforementioned two deputies taken into "custody," he's has threatened FOUR other deputies with contempt for not following his directives - all of which run contrary to established security protocols and sheriff office policies.
And almost no one is standing up for the deputies - not Dart, and certainly not Bee-atch.
There ought to be a job action by the deputies and the Teamsters. And a formal complaint with the ARDC or whoever oversees judicial misbehavior. And then, a lawsuit.

No one over sees judicial conduct and that is the problem. This guy deserves a new home in a long term jail cell.
I hope that judge becomes a victim one day.
It's not his courtroom. It belongs at best to the state. Your protocols overrule his, you have no requirement whatsoever to put yourself in harms way.

Well someone has to take a stand. The judge is in charge of his court room. But the court room security is run by the deputies. After charging the first deputies with contempt. That was blatant out of control power by the judge. And for the two deputies to be chastised that way by the judge was wrong. The judge thinks the duties of these deputies is inconsequential to his duties of running the court. Arrogance is running that court room and needs to be addressed! So, if a judge appears on the street and starts giving orders to any law enforcement officer. His words are the LAW? We know that’s not how it works. Someone needs to question this judge and find out how or why he thinks he is the person in charge of law enforcement procedures in the court system?
Dart is not a stand up guy. He sand bagged more than a couple of guards.and deputies over the years and got rid of people who tried to protect the innocent. Prefers not to rock the Democrat dei boat.
No one will do..they are all worried about loosing their spots/retaliation, even though there is a law against that too. Sad that all bosses are useless and dont stand up for their people.
That's what happens when one wears the golden hand cuffs. One does as one is told to do. Right or wrong. That is why police arrested many during covid even though the arrest was OBVIOUSLY wrong. Nobody wants to lose their health insurance or dental plan. Who here reading this would have defied the judge's order?

Just a thought, but maybe the deputies should NO LONGER carry keys to the restraints. Let the supervisors carry those keys, and when that JAGOFF Not-So-Much a judge tells them to release the shackles, it would be sorry JAGOFF, we will have to call a supervisor for the key! Again, just a thought!

His son was nearly murdered a few years back by a hail of bullets shot in his direction and was struck and hospitalized for quite a while. You’d think he would think differently about guys in front of him on murder charges. He has become unfit for his spot at 26th and Cal.

I have been very skeptical of so many DEI lawyers in Chicago, its hard for me to believe that they first graduated law school, regardless of how crappy the school is. Guessing they all went to Marshal. Then their ability to pass the Bar exam, I just can't believe it. Hey CWB can you do some investigative work to see if there is a testing method used for the DEI group to help them pass. Like the NOBLE sgts getting a copy of the test.

Simple fix Deputies have no keys. If Judge wishes the prisoner uncuffed he can request a supervisor and let him make the decision

can you file a complaint for unprofessional or unethical conduct against an active state court judge in Illinois through the Illinois Judicial Inquiry ?
One has to remember how judges are selected and elected in cook county. It is controlled by the democratic party controlled by boss Toni. No slating, no judgeship. When this goof gets to be a perceived liability to the democratic machine, he will be moved. Not a moment sooner.
The next time Huz Honorship pulls a crap and orders the thug to be allowed to get a hug from the fambily, The deputy should respond I'm sorry your honor and with all due respect we're not allowed to do that because people have been known to pass prohibited items to the handcuffed and it creates a dangerous situation for other inmates the deputies and even courtroom employees such as yourself your honorship.
The only way around it is for us to strip search the people that he's going to hug, and hug him back, and he still has to be in handcuffs and shackles when it happens.
and that immediately afterward we have to strip search them all again.
so if we can do that right here in the courtroom we can make it happen otherwise he's not hugging anybody yo honorship.
and if his honor doth protest, take the handcuffed piece of shit and walk them right out of the room and leave the judge to his own devices in an unprotected courtroom, see how he likes it.
fact it'd probably be hilarious if all of the sheriff's deputies walked out of the courthouse at the same time leaving the whole thing unprotected.

The whole concept of judicial respect is based on the judge actually earning it by having equal amounts of respect for both sides of the equation the prosecutors and a defense, and not caring who wins or loses, only that the law is upheld. and he's got to work with his courtroom support staff or he's doing everything himself which he clearly can't, sometimes these people need a gentle reminder of that fact...
Dart is an embarrassment to those of us in Mt Greenwood.
