Crime Down in the Big Apple

  • New York’s overall crime rate is 3% lower than last year — while the city is on pace to record the fewest murders in nearly 70 years, NYPD officials said Tuesday.

Murders, robberies, burglaries, grand larcenies and auto thefts were all down through the first ninth months of 2019 compared to the same period last year — 69,995 vs. 71,871, the NYPD said.

There were 237 homicides through September, a nearly 2% drop from 241 from last year. For all of 2018, there were 289 murders, three fewer than the 292 in 2017.
237 homicides is something like the 011, 015 and 025 combined, and New York is looking at 237 total.

We're joking of course, and we've written plenty of posts about how NYPD "kills" crime via the crooked CompStat program and wholesale reclassification of index crimes - lessons applied here to a lesser extent.

And look how they brag - Groot is going to demand the same thing here shortly.

The NYPD is divided into 78 precincts (districts) in the five boroughs (Brooklyn, Queens, Manhattan, the Bronx and Staten Island). The first three boroughs listed are divided into 2 "areas", both north and south for a aggregate of 8 "areas". Invariably, Brooklyn North [which includes both the adjoining and notoriously violent 73rd (Brownsville) and 75th (East New York) Precincts] leads the eight NYC "areas" in murders. The distant murder runner-up is the Bronx.

Brooklyn and Chicago have similar population counts, about 2.6 million.

Digest this: The CPD's 11th District leads ALL of Brooklyn North's precincts in 2019 murder totals.

Yeah, there's always statistical crap going on but the best indicator of violent crime is bodies. Harder- not impossible, but harder- to gloss over those. And NYC has been doing something right for awhile now compared to Baltimore, Chicago, etc. What is it? Fuck if I know. But the homicide rate difference can't be ignored. I thought it would be going up like everyone else after a few years under deblouseio.

Nearly a year after the fatal shooting of Laquan McDonald, Chicago police Lt. Anthony Wojcik allegedly told two of his detectives something unusual: He had to rewrite their reports on the case months before because someone had spilled coffee on the originals.

But, according to the city’s government watchdog, those original reports — handwritten notes of the detectives’ interviews with three witnesses in the case — either went missing or were destroyed. Wojcik also allegedly lost reports from another detective who interviewed those witnesses.

The CPD has been killing crime since I came on the job in 1968. Back then you could not come up on the air with a " bonified" part 1 offense without calling for a sergeant to approve. So burglaries became damage to property, etc. But, it is pretty hard to cover up a death. NYC has an advantage over Chicago, an incredible number of police that they can flood into any area. And, what I suspect a department not as ridden with patronage that Chicago is. DeBlasio and his policies are being sung to the high heavens with praise and crime is down to give him support in the liberal quarters.

You got some fucking nerve calling one of our officers a "Lazy ass" cause our 10-99 officer didnt respond quick enough to YOUR bullshit. No "on view shots fired" or other violent crime... No, just some bullshit cars driving recklessly or chasing eachother and YOU feel it warrants sucking on duty po's in the busiest district in the city into YOUR BULLSHIT?? You want to play the "real police" transfer your stupid ass into 011 and handle some real work ON DUTY. The reason nobody responded lights and sirens is cause we know better than to get involved in your unnecessary bullshit...we all know that in 011 "If you wait long enough, the bullshit takes care of itself" In THIS case, it took care of itself by them getting away and YOU not getting shot by some dudes because YOU are stupid enough to initiate police action over TRAFFIC while OFF DUTY. Officers like you have a way of getting themselves Suspended, jailed, fired over time, so good luck. Save supertrooper shit for YOUR district on YOUR time, we're busy enough in 011 without jokers like you creating work then insulting officers when we "Don't catch the bad guys". P.S. don't insult officers after you've left your phone number and badge number with the call taker..but based on the officer you insulted take on you, you don't have enough time on to know these things.

With such tiny decreases that could be attributed to anything. A rainy spring, a long winter, whatever. If you see a massive drop in crimes, then we can start talking about the plans city hall in New York has put in place, but let’s not go sucking de blasios dick over minuscule drops in crime. I respectfully disagree. There would be no reduction in crime, our hands are tide, we're neutered, we can't police. But there'll always be the few chargers but eventually they step on their own dicks and land in callback and that's that. Then we have Crimesha FuX and she finna not be putting peoples and folks in prison.
Adding additional officers would only benefit other Officers. Days off would not be cancelled and more than likely the district would not be in a backlog. But how long would the extra manpower last? many of the 17500 would land in connected spots and now we're back to square 1 again.

Mayor Lori Lightfoot and her family must move from 3434 W. Wrightwood Ave. in Logan Square to West Garfield Park in the close vicinity of Madison St. and Pulaski Rd. Perhaps Supt. Eddie Johnson and 1st Deputy Supt. Anthony Riccio should also move to the 11th District.

For an area of only 6 square miles, the 11th District murder rate is incredibly shocking. A retired NYPD friend checked NYPD homicide stats and found a few precincts are currently tied for the lead in NYC with only eleven murders. Most of the districts in Chicago have twelve or more murders.

I am a retired CPD detective. A long time ago, Channel 2 investigative reporter Pam Zekman won the Peabody Award for exposing the CPD's "killing crime" statistics. A revisit to this is long overdue, particularly with index property crime which is the bulk of crime reporting. After being "filtered" by district patrol and when the detective division followed up reports of burglaries, thefts and robberies with no injured victim, it was a common practice to either unfound or reclassify an index crime into a non-index crime. When following up on burglaries, particularly in poor neighborhoods, one of the first questions a detective might ask the victim would be "were the stolen items insured?". The common response was negative. I actually became aware of detectives unfounding or reclassifying such cases with the absurd, reporting that the victim's home was vermin infested and the rats ate the cash; UNFOUNDED. Also robberies were often reduced to non-index thefts.

While in recent years I do believe that local mainstream media is in City Hall's hip pocket and police rank-and-file are their "enemies", it would certainly shock the public if they knew how the CPD continues to "kill crime". I keep in contact with many active "anonymous" detectives.

As far as murder goes, it's hard to hide corpses but the disparity between "HeyJackass.com" and CPD Compstat numbers, don't be surprised if many obvious murders are suspended and filed away as mere "death investigations".

How about filing FOIAs? Since this is Chicago, I predict "crickets" from the local MSM.

That number is INSANE!!If they can go from over 2,000 Murders a year to under 300 a year it can be done in Chicago as well

Well said. No way CPD is adding 4,000 spots. Adding more officers does not translate into more officers in patrol

This makes sense for him. Much easier to steal from two places than from 650. Do you know how much effort it would take for the state politicians to steal from 650 separate funds????

I see your point, but we are not corresponding about low-level or even mid-grade level thieves. This is Illinois. We have the boldest, the most outrageous and the notorious. 650 would not even be a challenge.

CPD is at full strength now and budgeted strength of 13,500 sworn. Never been more than that. Don’t know where you got the 17,500 figure

10/10/2019 09:22:00 PM

that figure includes civilian employees.

Why include civilians? They have nothing to do with killing crime or working conditions or our contract. Just tried to play with numbers. Adding 4,000 civilians changes nothing

Yesterday, Thursday, NYPD graduated a recruit class of 300 that just hit the streets. We are so understaffed for a city of our size that it is ridiculous.

10/11/2019 09:23:00 AM

Our staffing is where it’s been for the last 50 years or more when the city population was a lot higher and there were 800 to 900 murders a year. NOW we are ridiculously understaffed

As a member of the NYPD for over twenty years, on the streets ,no house mouse here. I can tell you the good times and low crime numbers are coming to a end . I am starting to see the streets change. Our hands are tied as well. The members of the city Council have made our job so difficult. Prosecutors don’t want to prosecute. We feel we are the ones always justifying our actions and the perp gets the pass . Proactive policing is dead here . We are a clean up crew now . Our leadership has allow us to be a beating post for every liberal agenda in this city ! No matter what it is they always seem to pull in the police. Crime analysis tracks numbers on everything and those are the same numbers they use against us to show disparities In policing. There’s no disparities in policing if your working reactionary . It’s doing your job. That’s the way most of us are doing it now . Fact check the arrest numbers now . Great job on your blog very interesting stuff posted . Good luck on your Contract. Safe tour to all.

I always say those Officers working the west side deserve hazard pay. You’ve got to be insane to work over there.

This guy/gal for Mayor!! And YES we ARE insane. After a few years You find it's easier to give shitty service to dude than to deal with normal people in civilized areas, albeit the daily hazards and things you experience wear on you over the years.
