Screams from the Left

In a unanimous decision sure to provoke leftists everywhere into new fits of insanity, the US Supreme Court said colleges and universities that accept Federal money must follow Federal law - to wit, they must allow military recruiters on campus even if the college disagrees with the "don't ask, don't tell" currently in effect.

Even the liberal wing of the Supreme Court voted for the decision, which probably means Rove has finally gotten into their drinking water - or the universities were just plain wrong.

Tribune and Yahoo/AP coverage.

Nobody is forcing them to allow recruiters on campus....They simply need to stop accepting federal money!!! Let's see which one is more important to them.

Treasury Dept. Moves to Avoid Debt Limit

To wit:

"
Snow in his letter notified lawmakers that Treasury would begin tapping the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund, which Treasury officials said would provide a "few billion" dollars in extra borrowing ability.

Look who's raiding pension funds now. . .

Treasury Secretary John Snow notified Congress on Monday that the administration has now taken "all prudent and legal actions," including tapping certain government retirement funds, to keep from hitting the $8.2 trillion national debt limit.

In a letter to Congress, Snow urged lawmakers to pass a new debt ceiling immediately to avoid the first-ever U.S. default on its obligations.
...

In his letter, Snow notified lawmakers that Treasury would begin tapping the Civil Service Retirement and Disability Fund, which Treasury officials said would provide a "few billion" dollars in extra borrowing ability.
...
Treasury has also been taking investments out of a $65.3 billion government pension fund known as the G-fund [part of the Federal Employees Retirement System].

Another SCOTUS impact:

Scant Drop Seen in Abortion Rate if Parents Are Told

For all the passions they generate, laws that require minors to notify their parents or get permission to have an abortion do not appear to have produced the sharp drop in teenage abortion rates that some advocates hoped for.

In Tennessee, the abortion rate went down when a federal court suspended a parental consent requirement, then rose when the law went back into effect. In Texas, the rate fell after a notification law went into effect, but not as fast as it did in the years before the law.

Since the United States Supreme Court recognized states' rights to restrict abortion in 1992, parental involvement legislation has been a cornerstone in the effort to reduce abortions.

Hi,

the Tribune is reporting a story that three bank robbers were caught up on the North side during or shortly following the commission of the crime. Sgt. tasered one of em.

Anyone have this story? This sounds like amazing work (yeah 020!?), but is this all? Good job either way!

FYI

Saturday, March 18, 2006
Feeder Marches: 10AM - 3PM
Mass Rally | Union Park: 3PM
Mass March | Walton & State: 6PM assembly, 7PM sharp start.

Over ONE TRILLION dollars. That's the cost of the war in Iraq.

• to bankroll an ongoing war that has cost the lives of more than 2,200 U.S. soldiers and injured over 16,000 -- including 7,000 with brain, spinal cord, amputation and other serious injuries.
• an occupation that has killed more than 100,000 Iraqi children, women and men -- and maimed the bodies and memories of countless thousands more.
• that could instead be spent on vital needs like adequate health care, decent affordable housing, quality schools, college financial aid and job training.

The goal? To take an antiwar message directly to the people most directly impacted by this war, and to come together from across the city as a single voice to demand an end to this immoral, illegal occupation.

Since the war began, City of Chicago bureaucrats have declared key commercial corridors -- including the Mag Mile -- 'NO FREE SPEECH' zones. This year, protesters mimicked the City's annual holiday 'Festival of Lights' -- and won the right to march. Join us for the March 18 "Festival of RIGHTS" march, including contingents and floats from across the metro region calling for an end to U.S. war abroad and support for civil liberties and economic and social justice at home.

"...The figure of 100,000 Iraqi deaths had been based on somewhat "conservative assumptions", notes Les Roberts at Johns Hopkins Bloomberg School of Public Health, Baltimore, U.S., who led the study.

That estimate excludes Falluja, a hotspot for violence. If the data from this town is included, the compiled studies point to about 250,000 excess deaths since the outbreak of the U.S.-led war..."
