Nothing Like a Little Publicity

Very little publicity. From the Sun Times:
  • Two more city inspectors were charged in an ongoing investigation into corruption in the city's Buildings Department.

To date, 10 city inspectors have been charged in various corruption cases on state and federal levels.

Anyone know how many inspectors there are in the Buildings Department? We're betting it isn't many - probably under 200. Can anyone figure out the corruption percentage of Building Inspectors as opposed to ... oh, let's just say the Police Department? Double digits as compared to fractions maybe?

And this is the coverage they get in a Saturday paper? Media bias anyone?

Does anyone have any insight for me?

I am on the board of my condo building and we are in the midst of a lawsuit against the developer of the building. Story is, or the story our lawyers tell us, is that this 99 unit, 13 story building near Irving Park and LSD spent over a year being re-habbed top to bottom and the developers never got one single permit. NOT ONE! How is this possible? Even worse, the masonry outside is falling apart and the developer "said" the building was safe and some guy from the dept. of buildings signed off on it. In reality, the facade needs some serious work and we're currently paying out of our own pocket to the the building safe.

Ideas?

jeepmud,

Sorry to hear about your troubles... I thought mine were bad. I'm in a 9 unit building and had the building dept assign us to an administrative hearing last year because of "porch violations" (it's a stairway). Even the hearing officer showed dismay at the dept when I showed him pictures but we still had to make the repairs. Two attorneys later and after the repairs, the dept sent out THREE inspectors within 2 weeks. One came to the wrong address. We got three different results and got scheduled for yet another administrative hearing the day after our next scheduled date. The third inspector was doing our "annual" inspection. Our current attorney used to be a hearing officer and is dealing with all this nonsense. Our building is not crumbling. But still, our condo assets are just about zero, I'm guessing yours might be close to that soon.

Sounds to me you have satisfactory evidence to go after the developer and even the building dept for signing off on the rehabbing.

You go to the building department and make a request to see the file. If you have the time period for the renovations, it will be helpful. There should be every permit and zoning change for the building there. Certain renovations do not require a permit if it can be shown that they were only repairs or replacements. If you have any problems, you file an FOIA request with the Department. You can also get all of your board members and as many residents as possible to sign a formal petition and submit it to the Aldercreature. He only sees votes and may instigate an investigation.

Remember one thing, the developer is probably a member of the National Association of Realtors. They are a very powerful organization in this city and many of their members get away with all kinds of shenanigans.

Yes. Buy a nice house in the burbs. You can pick a ritzy burb and still maintain status. Barrington, perhaps burr ridge will do the trick. Make sure you get the latest, most expensive japanese luxury ute. Lease it if you have to...that way people will know how rich you are. Why buy an apartment in a corupt city and say with pride....I live on the lake! Whenever I hear that, I think, ohhh, im so sorry. You spent how much for how few feet? And how much for a parking spot? I'm sure you are pretty steamed, but you asked for ideas. Well, I have to go....promised the kids I'd play baseball with them in the back yard....or maybe we'll play basketball in the driveway.... either way, good luck with your overpriced apartment.

Off topic (what else is new)......
In regards to working the different special employments.. How did the movie detail, Ohare, CHA, TARA, School stuff all become open to the entire dept? There are still OT opportunities out there, not available to all. I know 013 has their own version of CHA special (West Haven) only open to coppers in that district.
TRU is able to work their weekends for OT. To me this is no different than working TARA. Or even it being open 1st to the people that work in the districts(s) that TRU would be in. I'm sure many people would work in those districts for time and a half, to drive around (wolf packing), writing a couple tickets, making a couple bullshit arrests and to top it all off, not having to answer calls in that district. It should be open to everyone to make OT.

This is off topic, but very important! This week, three of the Officers involved in the bar brawl in Dec will be charged. They are going to turn themselves in on Tuesday and are expected to make bond on Wed. The charges are expected to be the usual "pile on" from the ASA's Office. I happen to casually know these Officers and am here to tell you that they are decent men. In all honsesty, the Abbate ordeal was ridiculous and charges were pretty well expected in that case(even though he was charged improperly). This was a classic bar fight where the instigators got their asses kicked and because it was the police involved, they will be charged heavily. The point is this.... there is an ASA named David Navarro who led the charge in getting these officers indicted. He has vowed to indict ANY officer whose conduct is even marginal. I am BEGGING ALL Officers, dogs and workers alike to LAY DOWN and do absolutely NO pro-active police work. Yes we will handle our jobs and answer our calls, but NOTHING else. Let us think of our families and our futures instead of letting David Navarro bankrupt us with legal fees and lawsuits and send us to jail. The average legal retainer for a charged Officer is $25,000. This figure is just for starters and does not include lost wages, lawsuit payouts etc. Although these three Officers ARE going to be charged with felonies, their lawyers have asked NAVARRO about the possibility of them taking a plea to Simple Battery. His answer was bold and direct "There will be no more plea agreements for Police Officers." In closing, I beg all of you to think of your families and not let pieces of garbage like ASA NAVARRO financially destroy those special little ones and significant others over some police nonsense. I pray that Mr. Navarro has a lapse of judgement and crosses the line.....and that I am there to make sure he pays dearly.

Jeep Mudd:

If they pulled a permit you can get the records no problem. They had all permits on line before but that look up is no longer available.
The biggest problem is that the company tha rehabbed the building was more than likely an L.L.C. A Limited Liability Corperation. Even if they had permits they don't care if it is shoddy work. As for the comment about the National Association of Realtors? Has nothing to do with it. I belong to the NAR. Not only does a realtor have to be licensed by the state, but if there is any wrong doing from the Broker/Agent you can file charges with NAR or CAR or IAR (Chicago and Illinois) to get the member sanctioned or kicked out. I doubt the realtor had anything to do with the work going on, but if the LLC was also the selling agency, then more than 50% of their boardmembers must have a broker's license and can be fined (Up t 50K per offense I believe.) The city bowes out of all of this because they say that they do no inspect for safety, just code complaince. If there was no permit, they are totally off the hook and they could come back and condem your building. Not likely, but it has happened.
Your LLC will most likely give you a list of the 100 subcontractors and the general contractor to sue, but it will be very expensive and everyone will be shifting the blame.
Good luck...

The decision to indict for felonies was not made by Navarro but by his boss, Dick Devine.

Questions abound...

Did Cline and Devine discuss this over dinner at Tufano's?

Is it not true that Devine desires to be the United State's Attorney when a Democrat is elected?

Is Devine's son a meritorious pooch?

What is Commander L.S. role in the problems at the Jefferson Tap?

What is the new problems with L.S.'s group at Area 4 gun team?

Answers please...

You sir, are an uninformed tool. My last landlord- due to my home re-hab- who also happens to be one of the most corrupt building managers and real estate brokers- multiple agencies- in the city, made big contributions to the NAR and the CAR. Every and I mean every complaint against him and his agencies has been nullified. The guy is immune. I had to hire a lawyer just to get him to comply with the Landlord Tenant ordiance. When the lawyer tried to file a complaint with consumer services and the NAR he was told the guy is hands off. Who are you kidding?

You must only sell raised ranches in Edison Park or Mt. Greenwood. Most Developers- for your information most are licensed- are the biggest and most corrupt people arouned. They are protected by the NAR and the CAR.
