Partial Verdict

  • There are partial verdicts is the trial of Howard Morgan, a man charged with firing a barrage of shots at Chicago police officers. Morgan was found not guilty of three felony counts Friday afternoon. These actually, are some of the lesser charges in this eight-count indictment: not guilty on two counts of aggravated battery with a firearm, and one count of discharge of a firearm within the city limits. The jury remains deadlocked on attempted murder of a police officer.
Whatever happened to the days when if you shot a police officer, you were pretty much guaranteed jail time? Didn't two officers get shot during this incident?

Does a jury seriously swallow the BS that just because there were no prints on the jagoff's gun that officers must have planted it and shot themselves? Would you like to know how many times we've ever seen prints recovered from a gun? Once. It just doesn't happen.

And his excuse that he didn't know there guys were the police? Weren't some of them TRU? Don't they always wear uniforms? Weren't they all in marked CPD cars and actually had to chase the offender for a few blocks before he pulled over?

We aren't looking forward to the rest of this verdict. We just have no faith in the system anymore. This isn't all scandal fatigue on the part of Cook County juries - this is pretty much a declaration that police cannot be victims, no matter the circumstance.

One of the shot coppers was from TRU, uniforms and marked squads.

This is just a sign of things to come. After every video and scandal that breaks in CPD, people hate us more.

It is a scary day when people's hate for us can trump the facts of an airtight case. It really worries me.

I used to mock the "dogs" who just did their 8, no more, no less. But these days I cannot condemn them.

Hell, at least at the end of the day they'll have their house, car and freedom and be ALIVE to go home to their children.

Look out for yourselves kids, because no one else will.

Piecemeal Verdicts delivered in the strange case of Howard Morgan

Howard Morgan is that former Chicago cop turned railroad cop who was involved in that beyond bizarre shooting story. I can’t guess from what I’ve seen and heard what led to this horror story. I don’t think the real truth will ever be known.

I’ve never taken sides other than to suggest reasonable doubt or proof beyond a reasonable doubt should rule here rather than emotions.

It looks like things are going well for the defense. If Morgan is guilty and skates on all charges he paid a severe penalty by being horribly wounded, jailed, bankrupted and vilified. If Morgan is truly innocent he will never be made whole by any amount of money.

Partial or piecemeal verdict are rare in that they usually stay sealed until the whole enchilada, is returned by the jury. I can only hope this verdict is fair and just for all

Hmmm,
If you think it is bad now, just wait. With the upcoming,
"still developing scandals", there is serious reason to consider a change of profession.
Those who have ears to hear and the time will be leaving in mass, the "poor new guy" has no idea.

Whatever happened with Terry Ekl's lawsuit with the TRU guys in 010? Awhile back someone left a post that they did a search warrant on a TRU members residence in relation to gathering evidence, T or F?
Has anyone been stripped yet?

Survival on the CPD has become an art form. The days of 20+ years of service are over. LAPD has a fairly consistent turnover at approxomately 7.6 years of service.
Something to consider.

When are the next round of indictments coming down? Anyone notice how things have hushed up lately? With all the incoming information on corruption from everybody tripping over each other to tell, tell, tell on the other guy its getting hard to keep up with. Funny thing is most of these guys were the "Real Police"

Amen and a big 'ol WOOF to that my friend. I'll gladly answer my calls and back up my fellow officers, but in THIS day and age, actual policework is long dead. It won't be for a few years yet when there is a GIANT upswing in violent crime, because everyone is in behavioral intervention for doing our jobs. Then MAYBE we might see some G.O./S.O. protecting aggressive policing. But don't hold your breath.

Well like I said before its time to pack it in and do nothing for this rotten city. Call me what you want, a dog, coward, sissy, whatever floats your boat but I have the mind set of been there done that. Its now all about my family and our future, not about whos in box 1 to get that court time. I have given up, you will not get one more day of work out of me but I will always be there to backup my fellow officers. Its unreal to see all this happening yet I still see gang/tact teams trading dope for guns just so the numbers look good. This city is ready to stick it in and break it off, why dont more officers see that?? Save the "you took an oath speach" cause it doesnt mean a dam thing to me anymore. Like I said family, fellow officers and friends come first and everyone else will get an RD# cause thats as fas as Im going for the public. Im a DOG and proud of it! Remember the old saying "They aint never fired a DOG"

We need to let the level of police service fit the area. Taxpayers now get next to nothing when it comes to routine patrol, the non- taxpayer-get everything for nothing-what else can I git fo free get all the police thew want. Fuck them. wake up people and let's stick together on this. This dept. and city doesn't give a shit about you anyway. They would let you twist in the wind as soon as one of these so-called "revs" from some no tax paying bullshit store front "church" cries police brutality. What other language do these gang banging fucks understand? A good ass kicking. But we can't do that. You would turn on your t.v. and see rev. fuckface and his gangbanging "victim" standing behind the mayor and the supe. as they apologize and swear to "move to fire" the P.O. who was doing nothing but his job. Sound familiar? Get used to it.

Being on scene that evening, it make me disgusted on the "justice" found in Chicago/Cook County. We could of been buried 4 Officers from that S.O.B.'s actions, luckily these heroes took control of the situation. It is a royal slap in the face to them, their families, and all Officers everywhere to have such an incompetent legal system. But let this not effect our calling to be "The Police". To do so would show these brave Officers further disrespect. Be Safe boys and girls and take care of each other--for we don't have anyone else to do so. "Blessed are the Peacemakers, for they will be called the children of God."

This stinks!

From what I have picked up on the news it seems that there was a "witness", who stated that the officers did all the shooting including using the offender's gun.

The defense rested without a closing argument and therefore did not allow the prosecution to refute that testimony.

Bullshit! I was on the scene moments after this happened and helped string the crime scene tape. This happened in the intersection, WELL LIGHTED, surrounded by occupied apartments.
The offender's gun was on the street and in slide-lock. There were over 60 spent casings on the ground and the offender was lying handcuffed on top of some of them.

Did they want some CSI revelation! Or does the jury hate the police so much that they ignored the facts, including four uniformed officers testimonies including two were wounded.

Hey tool, why not give the real story? You are just as bad as the media. And since you know absolutely NOTHING, I used to work in 001 for Keating, and YES he has spent many hours in the buildings, was a great guy to work for, and wasn't a balless boss. From ABC 7 Chicago's website: "Defense lawyer Sam Adam, Jr. said the forensic evidence supports Morgan's claim that he never fired his gun.

"There was never any fingerprints on the gun found, which suggest somebody wiped it off. There was never any gunpowder found on his hand, which suggests he never fired a weapon," said the defense attorney.

Monday, the only eyewitness to the incident, Cherese Rush, testified that officers were holding Morgan's hands behind his back when she heard the first of many gunshots. But Tuesday, an assistant state's attorney Catherine Nauheimer testified that Rush told police a different story when she was interviewed a few hours after the incident."

Oh yeah right, let's get this picture. Two of the four uniformed officers, in a well lit intersection surrounded by apartment windows are holding this as yet uninjured guy up. Then all four officers take turns shooting at this guy, emptying their guns, some changing magazines. In firing about 50 rounds, none of them inflicts a fatal wound on the offender. Then firing the offenders own weapon themselves, wounding two of the officers.

Where did they get this jury, from the O.J. Simpson trial?

In-fucking-credible!

I hearby call for a total halt in activity from 018. Why work for this scumbag greek. Whoever wrote that keating stays in the building (project) must have buildings mixed up. The only building that he stayed in was Ralphie's office to suck [up], I won't say what I really want to say. These two are not worth it. I quit! Really I quit!

I know little of the case, and will therefore not make a determination.

That having been said, I direct your attention to the murder of that old lady in Atlanta by APD officers doing a drug raid on a warrant obtained via a perjured affidavit. Those officers attested to a LOT of stuff, including to the presence of drugs in the woman's home... which they planted. Several of them were wounded too... by each other.

I also direct your attention to the various statements of Officer Alvin Weems and a star-studded cast of CPD higherups, all of which have now been proved to be lies.

For all I know the cops in the case under discussion told the truth, the whole truth, and nothing but the truth... but I'd be a damned fool to take that on faith.

The CPD has built up quite a reputation... and not a good one either. Sticking your fingers in your ears and singing "The Night Chicago Died" as loudly as you can won't change a thing.

I'm betting that there are people who believed Weems and Cline who are having second thoughts about the veracity of CPD personnel, under oath or otherwise.

Could it get a guilty man off? Yep.

The question is whose fault that is...

Whose fault it is? It is the jurors' fault and no one else's. You're just as ignorant as the media who generalize a whole police department on the actions of individuals. This is not the first time a jury has sided with the defense in a police shooting. I beleive in the Ceriale case that there were problems with the jury and the case had to be retried.

Morgan got Sam Adam, a connected lawyer. It is not surprising. The real question will be how soon will he file the lawsuit, how much will he demand, and how much will the city settle for. Too bad he did not get killed. Would've saved everyone a lot of time, trouble, and money.

Let's distill your "argument" down to it's fundamental premise.

In spite of a pervasive culture of lying in the CPD (and elsewhere) from the Police Superintendant on down, you want police testimony to be believed without question.

In spite of absolute proof that cops in Atlanta managed to negligently shoot each other while murdering an elderly woman, you want the public to somehow believe that the CPD can't shoot each other... even though they have, in one case leading to a felony murder conviction and death sentence for a dufus who happened to be present on scene.

APD officers didn't "supposedly" plant evidence, they've CONFESSED to planting evidence... along with lying to obtain a warrant in a raid in which they murdered an elderly woman.

As I said, I don't know if the guy's guilty or not. I do know that I'm not stupid enough to take the word of the CPD for it... unless you can prove that Officer Weems was surrounded by invisible ninjas... and that Superintendant Cline is sitting on proof of same.

You may find this hard to believe, but if an organization, AS AN ORGANIZATION, lies enough, people stop believing what it says. When that happens, MORE lying doesn't make that organization more credible. Nor does whining about it.
