St. Jude March

Followed by a football game. What's not to love?

Anyway, best wishes for a decent bit a weather and a safe march. Good luck to the Enforcers for the game right afterwards.

We'll be at most of the events today, so posting is going to be light.

I have to say I am very disappointed about the whole march being relocated to the bike path out by museum campus. This is just another example of how this city could care less about it's policemen. They can shut down the streets downtown for every other f*cking event and parade, but when it comes time to acknowledge the officers who gave their lives to protect the thankless a**holes of this city they have to go march out where Jesus Christ lost his shoes. If they pushed this march out any further, we'd all be wearing our swimming trunks to St. Jude!! What a joke. Stay safe everyone.

It was nice to have the march near the Memorial, but at the same time I can't help feeling that part of the reason they moved it was to keep us out of the public view - as if we're an embarassment.
And so much for the "smooth traffic flow and ease of parking..."

worst st judes i been to. you would think some one would have figured out the parking problems and directing some traffic pre and post st judes. it made me late to the bar.

Whats not to love? How about sitting in traffic in the lot NOT MOVING AT ALL (at all!) for 1/2 hour after the march. Where was the helicopter to tell the officers on the ground how to direct traffic?? I guess they ran out of the hour's worth of gas the put in it.

[Rant over>]
It was a good turnout though; hopefully next year they can get the bugs worked out; I'll bet when there's a Bears game, traffic moves better.

Wow...please tell me that somebody's head is going to roll over that parking fiasco!!!! Absolutely ridiculous. I left my house at 7am, didn't get parked until 8:45. Of course, it didn't help that, while everybody was stuck in the gridlock, every other copper thought he was too important to wait with the rest of his/her fellow officers, and tried cutting in and out. Beautiful day. Beautiful turnout. Let's just hope next year, Keating is de-throned, or should I say "de-Segwayed" and someone with half a brain is in charge of the traffic/parking situation.

Sure there were some first year problems that I'm sure people will be ranting about, or already have by the time this post gets put up, but I'd like to accentuate some of the positives that I saw today. The problems can all be addressed and resolved before next year.

First, I could not get over the number of family members I saw throughout the area today, many more than I recall seeing in the past. I hope that's a new trend that continues.

The weather, while beyond anyone's control, was the best I can remember in the last several years.

I don't know if the number of officers was a lot more than in previous years, but it sure appeared that way from my vantage point.

The helicopter flying over head was a great addition.

The view of the skyline from Solidarity Drive is still one of my favorite views around. To have that as our backdrop instead of being lost in a canyon of buildings on Michigan Ave. was phenomenal!

I'm sure after this is posted people will take their usual cheap shots at the comments and such, but I was very proud today to be wearing our uniform.

great weather but there was no one there to watch...just how that little irish prick wanted it us away from everyone else..and i love the fact that it took longer to get out of the parking lot than it did to march..and yes i do understand how they want to promote the new gold star park but i think that is being done with the run to remember but what do i know..

A great day, a great march. Traffic was a nightmare and needs to be tweaked to allow better ingress and egress but it was nice to have the whole area to ourselves.... well done

O.K., so here's MY humble opinion...
This is my 39th appearance at St. Jude and next will be my last as an active member.
Yes, I know, there will be those that beef about the location this year. That's what us coppers do. Overall, I believe it's a good location. Just a few points to ponder.

In the last 75 years it has been moved 5 times, so we are not necessarily breaking any sort of tradition here.

Yes, it was nice to march down Michigan Ave., but we’re not there to have people watch us...the real theme is to honor OUR fallen.

Yup, LSD backed up and a lot of people running late delayed the march but this was the 1st year. Hopefully they'll open all the lots early or come up with a better plan.

Let's face it, hardly anyone went to the Mass at Holy Name anyway as it was not convenient. I'm guessing only about 50-75 tops, not counting the Knights of Columbus, Supt., exempts etc. actually went to church after the previous marches.

The service this year was an interfaith service and lasted around a (tolerable) 15 minutes.

The CPD Honor Guard added a great touch with Taps, and the 21 Gun Salute. Ditto to the Pipes and Drums that played Amazing Grace.

There was room for our families to line the path and watch the parade and/or the ceremony.

Finally, it's OUR park! Yes, I said OUR park. Members of OUR Police family DIED so we may have a better place to live. They deserve to have it as an everlasting memorial to those that made the Ultimate Sacrifice. We’re there to show that they are Always Remembered. And on the 1st Sunday of May, we maintain that tradition and show the surviving family members that they Never Walk Alone!

So, IF you're not happy with this years events, let's give it a chance. IF you want to use this forum that SCC provides to speak YOUR peace, go ahead, that's what it's here for. The only thing I respectfully request is that you keep in mind the REAL reason why WE march every year and not be influenced by trivial things that take away from our proud tradition.

May each and every one of you reading this stay safe, hold your head up high as a member of that revered product of..."Chicago's Finest!"

Remember Our Thin Blue Line!

i'd like so say that i actually liked the location of the march. It's got such a nice, scenic backdrop of the city over there.

But I just can not get over what a nightmare the traffic/parking situation was. I sat on roosevelt for about 1/2 hour trying to get to the parking area. When the traffic stopped moving for about 10 mins straight, i said F it, and just swung down some side street and parked illegally, then had to walk about 15 mins to get over there. How can they get bears game/mckormic traffic in and out of there and not us. Unbelievable.

Thank you to the (2) 1st District Officers for picking me up. Very nice.

Traffic was very confusing, nobody knew anything...

It choked me up seeing the Gold Star Families at a closer view: the Gordon, Solorio, etc. families.

Loved the helicopter in the beginning, and the end w/the gun salute and pipes/drums. god bless

I agree, the parking sucked. But I do like the location, especially for a nice day like today. And f**k the public, them & their media are an embarassment to us.
Besides, if al queda decides to start hitting us here w/car bombs here(U.S.); it'll be alot harder to nail us at that location.....

Thank you to all the officers that marched today. Hopefully, next year the traffic and parking will be worked out. To those officers that march in the St Jude Parade year after year because they want to honor and remember fallen officers and the surviviros left behind, thank you. To those officers that show because they fear getting in trouble if they don't-you have no idea what this is all about and shouldn't be wearing the blue uniform.

I'm all for having a park and I think I'm actually going to buy a brick. The park is beautiful, still, in my humble opinion, it's no place for our march.

Michigan Ave. was a much better location and put us closer to civilization. Maybe that was the problem. We inconvienced those with the money. Everyone I spoke with hated this new location, but of course we'll hear how wonderful it was. Maybe next year we'll be marching on one of O'Hare's runways.

This is my idea. Change the venue every year. One year south, one year north etc.

Where were the TMA's to sort out the traffic problems. What the fuck! You can get 50,000 people into a Bears game but cant get us some kind of plan to get in and out of there in a reasonalbe time!! Who is the dipshit in charge of the traffic section? He should immediatly be demoted!!

Otherwise, great place to hold the march. I know not everyone will agree on that point. At least we call all agree the traffic was a total fuck up!

All and all a nice event. It wasn't about anything other than us honoring our fallen brothers. One thing did get my goat however. Why was a civilian exempt member allowed to wear a uniform. I though the guy in the wheelchair was a civilian.

For years we could park anywhere downtown for the St Jude Parade. Tow zones, bus stops, fire hydrants, private & public parking lots, alleys, sidewalks & where ever we needed. Nobody complained. Not even the news media would shit on “our day” and take pictures of marked / unmarked /private cars in “violation.”
Today was a new location at the Chicago Police Memorial, where we belong, in quiet, solom, moring for our own. We don’t need or want the early morning Michigan Ave tourist, from Where Ever, USA watching us go by.
Next year parking may be relaxed. There is a lot of space not used in the “campus” that was restricted this year.

I'm not a Cline guy and I was dead set against the change in location, but having said that I've got to admit it was a great St. Judes event. If they can improve on the getting and leaving thing, I think it will be a bigger hit next year. I liked it so much that I may have my family there next year. First time in 27 years.

I think having the march at this years location just re-confirms the " US AGAISNT THEM " mentality.
Lets face it, the only citizens that will show up are the few lowly reporters told to cover it.
Yes, some police family members did come. Besides them the squirrels and birds seemed put out.

I am glad Phil Cline had a beautiful day for one of his last official public ceremonies. I will always associate his efforts with that majestic police memorial.
Some of us say Why, Phil Cline says Why Not.

The park was the perfect host for today's event. As I solemnly walked from the lot to the planitarium, I had time to myself to think of those I have known on this job we have lost. Some are honored, many are not. As I met with old partners and friends, we could then walk as one, as we always do in the end.

Circumstances may have taken the face of the department away from us momentarily, but that beautiful park allowed us to smile today.

Well, I'm not there, but there is a bit of irony in the march being marched from Michigan Avenue to the Museum Campus.

A long time ago the museum campus area was not land. It was in Lake Michigan and was subsequently filled in.

When Fort Dearborn, at Michigan and Wacker (as marked on the sidewalks) was abandoned, the settlers and soldiers marched south along the then-lakefront. At 18th street they were massacred in what is known as the Fort Dearborn Massacre. It happened on the lakefront of the time, which is about where Calumet or Prairie are now, and there used to be a memorial at or about one of the millionaire's Prairie Avenue mansions. The memorial itself is hidden away in a Park District warehouse.

And that, my friends, is how much this city remembers its history. Who among you remembers that, and for those among you who did not, who among you actually expects the public or the city to care about you individually in 150 years?

This city has already moved on. Demanding your collective ounce of thanks or praise falls on deaf ears.

That memorial for the Fort Dearborn massacre was put away decades ago. Every day missing should tell you how much the city will value your life or memory.

Sure, somebody here will say you will always be remembered. You believe that? Name anyone killed in the Fort Dearborn Massacre.

I have to admit that I was one of the "conspiracy" people who thought that it was moved "to screw with us" and all of that nonsense.

But now I must admit that it was an awesome day..and I enjoyed this year more than the previous ones.

I think next year will be better, once the traffic snafu's get worked out.

I made it there in record time about 15 minutes only to spend an additional hour in gridlock to go the last 2 miles.

Also, I have to laugh at the few, maybe a dozen, P.O.s (goofs) who drove the shoulder on I-55 and N/B Lakeshore drive in their personal cars, in some instances passing marked and unmarked patrol cars, including an ISP trooper "on duty" who just looked and shook his head in disbelief.

You know who you are. Next year wait your turn like everyone else. Did you even pause to look around into those cars you were passing in your fit of "road rage"..yes all fellow officers. Just laughing at you pathetically. GET A LIFE!

If they figure out the traffic mess..next year should be very nice!

A friend who lives in the south-loop took a cab. It cost $15.00 and 1/2 hour to go 5 blks. He said he could have walked it in 15 minutes. Oh well, live and learn!

All in all, a very moving experience! It was a bit of a hike to get in the march sequence, and the parade got off to a heck of a late start, but it was a nice event. Nice touch, having the ppo's parade with the photos of the deceased; they should have kept them closer together, huge gaps between the ppos carrying the photos. The fifteen minute interfaith service was kept to a minimum; loved the 21 gun salute!
Hopefully, we'll have a lot of the kinks worked out for next year.
And how in the hell does anyone show up to MARCH without a HAT, or a tie? Why do these bozos wait until the last minute to get their St. Jude dress duds together? Saw a few people out there marching without ties. Hopefully, the Exempts will do a better job of looking over their people at next year's march. If you don't care how you look, then come in C/D and stand off on the sidelines. Don't show up and expect to march with a halfassed uniform. We've had enough embarrassments to the job this year.

With the 5K race over, does this mean that R.A. will have to some type of police work finally. R.A. gets detailed to the academy, keeps the car and works on a race, which is not part of the police department, while on the clock. If you are ever stripped for double dipping, you can use her schedule/position that the police department consents to such.

The 5k Run to Remember was a fantastic event and a great way to showcase the sacrifices of our fallen officers to the public. A race with over 2200 runners in only its third year is almost unheard of. Of course you know that because you're the "real police." Over half of those runners were civilians, many with no family or friends on the job. Now they've had a chance to see our park and hear our message. RA worked countless hours and spent much of her own money to help make this race a success. Those of you that are so quick to be critical don't have the brains or the energy to do what she did. I bet you didn't even get your fat ass out of bed to run the race.

I figured it would be fucked up because it was the first year...It was.

First: Thos e idoit Traffic Management Authoroty people couldn't manage themselves out of a fucking box. I cam up Roosevelt from 90/94 and was stuck for over an hour. This was at 7am. I figured i would get there early, get a nice spot for leaving, and be able to bullshit with those I havent seen in a while (sorry, I honestly do go there no matter what and it is because I want to honor the families of those who have given their lives on the job, but it is great to see people for 15 years ago, or last week, etc. that ouy haven't seen in a while and you know you will see them there. he march took forever and a day because stuff was so screwed up. Hopefully nextyear they will have cops doing traffic and they will allow parking on all of the museum lots and McCormick pplace aso for free. I will once again take the day off (as I usually do) to honor our fallen, but next year I am going to set up the grill and have a couple coolers full of beverages and "Tailgate" in honor of our brothers. I love the new spot. Hated it at first, but you can't say the spot itself sucks or that driniking a few and then going and watching a CPD football game wouldn't be fun. I hope the Enforcers make it a tradition and they my family, freinds , and co-workers can partake in the festivities and salute this honorable professions.

God bless and stay safe...

St Jude really came through with some beautiful weather, great turn out by all. The hike to the parade was longer than the parade itself, but maybe next year they will have buses and parking lot shuttle to bring everyone closer to the assembly. I was especially moved by the fallen officer's pictures being held up at eye level, it gave you the feeling that they were walking along with you as they embodied the officer who held them up. A constant reminder that not much has changed since the 1800's til today, that there will always be men and women willing to give their life to make the rest of the world a better place. What an honorable calling to have.
Peace and prayers to you all.

Location was great. It was nice being on the lake with a view instead of being between giant buildings downtown.

Parking absolutely sucked the big one. The boneheads directing traffic failed. What an embarrassment and really fucking aggravating.

The police helicoptor overhead was a nice touch.

The enforcers game was really good. The beer/food line personell sucked the big one too. Talk about slow motion and alot of huh's and what's.

$15.00 to park in the same garage that I was already in 20 minutes earlier for the parade for free. Nobody knew any details where to park for the football game was total bullshit.

Location...great. Traffic...horrible. I actually like the scenery and i like the fact that we are out of the public view. I really could care less if the public comes and watches us march. we should only care about a handful of things on st. judes.

first is for all of us to get together and remember and honor our fallen brothers and sisters. second, screw the public, i dont need to be scene by some downtown liberals marching down michigan ave...I would rather have all the coppers at a really nice location and having our family and friends support us...the people that genuinly care about us and respect the police. Screw the public. I dont want there support.

Ive realized that its much better to be among friends and family on a sacred day as this one. I feel it makes it much more personal having it at the memorial park surrounded by our family members... walking down the street today the familys of the p.os and the gold star families looked very excited and most importantly proud of us being police officers.

So my opinion, keep us out of the public view, im not marching for the public, im marching for me, my brothers and sisters in blue, my family, the gold star families, and most importantly.... our fellow officers who valiently and heroicly have given there lives doing what they love... being one of chicagos finest!

This was my 17th St Jude poor planning and everything else aside my biggest question is this. Why do all the young male black police have such disrespect for the job we do that they feel it importantant to wear the uniform hat slanted to either the right or the left to represent the gang they left or are still a member of since the became the police. What a fucking disrepectful joke.

I won't belabor the traffic/parking issue, I'll let that dead horse lie. It was an excellent day overall, not too bad for the first year at Memorial Park.....I'm sure that it'll be smoother next year..hiccup. It's only my 3rd St. Judes PArade, and I did enjoy blocking up Michigan Ave with our 20 minute parade, but I did get some enjoyment out of the female jogger on the cinder path that runs through the memorial. She was running along and stopped when she hit a wall of coppers walking to the planetarium. She turned around looking a bit put out, her little I-POD and all and started walking south again. I made eye contact and she had that look like we invaded her little spot upon nearing I shrugged a bit and sadi, "Well it is OUR park." She didn't have anything to say.....that somehow made all of the traffic inconveniences a bit better for me. As for the media, c'mon did you really expect them to put on a good show for us? Maybe if we tossed some bums into the lake after the parade or just randomly started firing rounds off into the air, you know what? Fuck em! Fuck em all! I'd just as soon not have those pricks there on our solemn day to remember our honored dead.......the media scum has no place on our hallowed ground.

Pleae, Please, Please leave your kids at home or let them watch from the sides. This is suppose to be a parade about honoring our fallen brothers and sisters. More and more people are bringing their kids and I feel it ruins the purpose. I know you love your kids. I know they are proud of you and you are proud of them. But they shoudln't be marching with us. I know others feel this way as well, a lot from the people I spoke with. Even if a small percentage feel this way, you should honor them and their reason for attending. Your fellow Unit and District members feel this way but they don't want to tell you because they don't want to hurt your feelings.

The March was great simple as that, we as police officers will complain about an establishment giving us half off instead of full price.

OK indeed traffic was a problem but waiting a few extra minutes to pay tribute to the men and women that have lost their lives on this job I'll do it again.

Great turn out and who cares about who sees us. The purpose of the Parade is for those officers and not for no one to see us.
People complaining about parking please, have you ever attempted to park when the parade went down Michigan Av.

Why have the Parade there? because we now have a place that we can call our own what better place to go than to the place where our fallen comrades are memorialized, just look at the faces of the members of the Gold Star Families as we march by in our dress uniforms listen to what mothers, fathers, brother and sisters say to their children. And afterwords you'll know what the march is really about look at their faces and watch the tear run down from that mother's eye when her son is not looking anymore as the recruit walks by with her husband's picture. That’s really what’s it's about it's about them and not about us.
Then for him to see the picture of his father going by and him standing and saluting, that’s what this parade is all about. I'm just glad that I was able to witness something like that, Down Solidarity Dr with the skyline and lake front in the background. Then to hear the 21 gun salute at the ceremony afterwards it was just awesome. Thanks Sup for changing the location.

Great turn out we made each other proud.

the park is beautiful. outside of that a BIG thanks to the two lovely ladies working the atvs on southbound lsd. you had an exit blocked...you were standing there waving cars past...we pulled up attemptin to gain access to the parking lot in order to attend the game, we identified ourselves as police officers and showed you our badges, just in case the FULL DRESS UNIFORM didn't show you that. we asked one of you to pull your atv back a few feet so we could park, #1 ignored us #2 the 350 lb. whale SITTING down asked #1 "hey they wanna see the game" #1 your reply "so they can go around too" I would like to show my heartfelt appreciation for your attention to duty and for helping out your fellow officers. that said I HOPE YOU CHOKE ON YOUR FIFTEENTH DONUT OF THE DAY BITCH! if any traffic officers read this blog please forward this message to those two embaressments to the uniform. on our day to honor our fallen you two managed to make 6 officers insanely mad. good job!

Unfortunately thats what this job is turning into people not caring about and not knowing about professional courtesy, thats just crazy. Did you hear about P.O. Franelli in 008 giving the disabled officer a parking ticket. What are they teaching these people in the Academy?

With the 5K race over, does this mean that R.A. will have to some type of police work finally. R.A. gets detailed to the academy, keeps the car and works on a race, which is not part of the police department, while on the clock. If you are ever stripped for double dipping, you can use her schedule/position that the police department consents to such.

You people are a joke I wonder could you raise the type of money that she's raised she did a wonderful job, used some of her own damn money, worked countless hours, raised money for our park, the memorial foundation, the GOLD STAR FAMILES and had over 2200 people there and you complain, some of you people are just unbelievable. The Run To Remember Race was great. One of the better 5K's I have ever participated in and it has gotten better each year. Whoever organized it did an excellent job!
The St. Jude's March was fantastic at the park. It felt like it was right where it was meant to be, it is our park, and hopefully will remain the venue for St. Jude's to come. Yes, it was disorganized, parking, traffic, etc. But the kinks can be worked out.
Next year we should have a big barbecue--it would boost morale and give everyone a reason to stay and enjoy the park. A barbecue could also be a good fundraiser for the Gold Star Families....

I think that having the parade at or near the memorial is perfect. As has been stated here in other posts, this is not about being seen by the public, it is about being seen by and supporting the Gold Star Family members. After we finished marching, I went back and watched from across the street from the stand. You only have to look at the faces of the families to see what it means to them. I heard some of them thanking coppers for coming and helping with the day. Imagine, them thanking us. Moms and dads who lost their sons, wives who lost husbands, kids who lost parents. And they are grateful to us. Unbelievable.

Sitting in traffic bothered you? So leave the house earlier. Do you ever get up early to go hunting or take a trip or to go and play golf? Then you can get up early for this. Try to remember that the world is bigger than what is convenient to you. For 3-4 hours a year, you are asked to think about and do something for those whose loved ones made the ultimate sacrifice. It is the least that any of us can do. For the 23rd year in a row, I was proud to be there.

Those of us who brings kids understand your point, but remember they have just as much to lose maybe more if we end up being one of the fallen officers who are being marched for.
My kids love marching in the parade, it makes them feel special and helps them to understand the sacrifics that we are willing to make.

Wow!! I don't know where to start in response to the idiots who were offended by the CIVILIAN in CPD uniform. For your information that CIVILIAN was Commander Joe Murphy. Approximately one week after making Commander, Joe was in a horrible traffic accident that has left him paralyzed. His life now is a constant struggle. If he, any disabled P.O., or any retiree wants to wear his uniform at the St. Jude Parade I am all for it. For Christ's sake I saw two young sons of a P.O. dressed in little police uniforms. Was I offended? Hell no! It was beautiful. Hey everybody, we are all brothers and sisters in this giant bucket of shit and we need to stop sniping and start supporting one another!

I think families there, or a police officer their with their child in tow is beautiful thing. The children I saw there were all old enough to be able to remember the parade or the sea of blue. Something to tell their grandchildren. A memorial is not just about suffering a loss but also celebrating the memory of a great person. The whole industry evolves around protecting the rights of people, so we can procreate, and our offspring can live in a free and peaceful society. Did it even occur to you that maybe that child is related to one of the fallen members?
There is no greater love in the world than that of a child.

ST. JUDE IS TO HONOR ALL THE OFFICERS THAT GAVE THEIR LIVES TRYING TO MAKE THIS CITY A BETTER PLACE TO LIVE. ALL OF YOU IDIOTS THAT ARE COMPLAINING ABOUT TRAFFIC AND THE LOCATION SHOULD BE ASHAME OFF YOURSELVES. AND THE OFFICERS (ESPECIALLY PPO'S) THAT WOULD RATHER GO OUT DRINKING THE NIGHT BEFORE AND NOT GO TO THE PARADE SHOULD NOT BE WEARING THE UNIFORM. YOU CAN'T GIVE UP ONE NIGHT OF DRINKING OR 3 HOURS ON A SUNDAY MORNING FOR OFFICERS THAT GAVE UP THEIR LIVES.

Whoever wrote the garbage above obviously has no clue as to the kind of dedication, not to mention long hours, it takes to coordinate an event of this size. If you raised thousands upon thousands of dollars for the families of fallen police officers, then..maybe you would have a right to comment, but I'm guessing that's not the case. I've run dozens of charity races throughout the years, and can honestly say this one ranks up there with the best of them. And, every year, it gets better. This is "police work", asshole...she is working tirelessly to support the families of fallen police officers. What did you do today, tough guy? Lock up a bustout with a nickel bag, write a few parkers, then hide out under a viaduct somewhere? I'm guessing your cynical, lazy ass didn't even find the Run to Remember worthy of your presence. I've never met RA, but I'd write her up for a department commendation if I were her supervisor.

I go simply to pay respect to people like your son who I know is watching the march from up above and their loved ones who now carry the burden of not having the fallen Officer around. You are either not the police and/or have no idea what being the police is and what the police family is all about. At last years parade, one of the young officers in 010 made the entire march on crutches. This year one of the 010 bosses showed up in uniform walking with a cane. Couldn't march but showed up for our fallen comrades and our police family which is the whole idea.

If you had been around you would have some real pride in the uniform. If you had been around for a while, maybe you would attend awards ceremony, where medals are presented to our injured and wounded on crutches and wheelchairs. If they show up in uniform, God bless 'em for their sacrifices.

Next year, stay home like Richie Daley does.

Relax that guy was the police and in my opinion is still the police. He was a hell of a cop, give him a break he's had a hard life, and a hard road ahead of him.

He was responsible for getting convictions on the Lori Roscetti case, and yes they were the right convictions.

That Lt. has done his fair share of work and deserves to wear the uniform. Had it not been for the accident in his car he would still be sworn. Lighten up we got enough problems we don't need any whining.

Maybe I do not know everything, maybe I am not a good cooper in your eyes, and I really do not care. From what little I know, I wish I could be half the copper that Joe Murphy was, and still is. All I do know is that he is ten times more the man then you will ever be.I suppose you would like to take a shot at Jimmy Mullen too.

I am no going to some moron who challenges you to “meet me in the parking lot”, or “come down and see me” because I would ALMOST sound as pathetic as you. I will close by giving you my name and unit so you know I am not a coward like yourself. And no, I am not related to Joe Murphy, I just share the same last name.

Joe Murphy would get pissed, not at some uninformed goof questioning his right to be at St.Jude in uniform, but at those of us who would defend him. But defend him I will. As has been mentioned here, Joe is a decorated Marine Vietnam vet, who was badly wounded in battle. He was still being treated for those wounds about 2 years before his accident. Joe was a terrific Detective, then a Detective Sgt then the Lt of A/2 violent crimes. As such he put away, or helped put away or supervised the putting away of more murderers and rapists and other violent criminals than anyone could count. He also helped more coppers out of jams than you would believe. Then he went to cold case and helped close, or supervised the closing of so many horrible crimes, including the Lori Roscetti case, as again has been mentioned here. I was fortunate to work with Lt Joe in an ancillary manner on some of these cases and even though he had 30+ years he never lost his love of the job, nor did he lose the thrill of making a good arrest. This is a guy who loves being the police, and loves policemen. And I can tell you this, he is a better cop in that chair than the complainer will ever be.
For anyone to question Joe Murphy's qualifications to wear our uniform is a slap in the face not only to him but to to anyone who has ever put a pair of handcuffs on a bad guy.

I'll speak for a lot of coppers when I say that Joe Murphy is one of the best supervisors and best policemen I have ever met.

Memo to 5/08/2007 08:09:00 AM

Mister A Hole,

No one questioned the man's integrity, his military service, his credentials, all the poster asked was "why was a civilian wearing a uniform?" Not everyone knows who everyone else is. And all and all he was right. Although Murphy was a good copper he isn't one now - period stop. There were other retired members at the march who I'm sure would has been reprimanded if they had worn their uniforms.

So read before you write Mister Big Shot.

It makes me sick when people who work inside talk about how hard they “now” work. In an attempt to imply that working inside is a lot harder than at the district level on the streets. I have two suggestions: 1. shut the f*ck up, and 2. bid back to the district if you do not like it, but please do not ask for sympathy about how hard you work. People talk about how hard someone worked to put a race together, or being someone’s secretary or driver – then mysteriously these people are promoted meritoriously. Well, I, and thousands of other officers, work 6 days a week and with the new check off rules, it’s a full 8 ½ hours – it’s 51 hours per week and with an average of 30 hours per period in court, it’s roughly 59 hours per week. I, nor, do my fellow officers, get a take home car and everyday we must respond to calls and must put cuffs on someone, which opens the door to potential bullshit civil lawsuits. We are police officers –charged with maintaining public order and safety and enforcing the law, including preventing and detecting crime. So if you want to be a race director, a secretary or a chauffer – go become one, but then again, you would not be paid as well in those fields, so you abuse this one.

Did you hear about P.O. Franelli in 008 giving the disabled officer a parking ticket. What are they teaching these people in the Academy?
5/07/2007 08:33:00 AM
***********************************
There are a couple of issues on this post I want to address:
1). P.O.'s are NOT taught to write other coppers in the Academy. Because this PO F. is a jerkoff and wrote a disabled PO does not mean that he was taught that in the Academy!
2). Lt. Murphy wearing his uniform at the St. Jude parade.
Whatever he did in his 30+ yrs. of service, I give him an attaboy for.
Because he was injured in an OFFDUTY accident or not = makes no difference. He is a retired/disabled officer. Period.
Once you are no longer active = you are no longer permitted to wear the uniform. It does not mean that one does not appreciate the service he did while active, it means that he should have worn a suit like all the other retired/disabled officers there.
3). As for children marching and wearing uniforms.
They are children. Let them learn to respect and show respect.
Maybe oneday they too will serve as Lt. J. Murphy did with honor.
4). And lastly, I do know R.A. She seems like a nice person who was asked by the Dept. to work on the Memorial Run. So, for a couple of weeks she got a car and handled a mounumental job. (yeah, her personality can be a little irritating) - so what.
I didn't see any of you moaners stepping up to help out = so shutup!
Now its over, she is back doing her regular assignment.

Wow, look at the big picture people and stop moaning.
If you can do things better than what was done - step forward - otherwise shut your pieholes and be honored to have marched for those that gave the ultimate sacriface.
God Bless and Stay Safe.
