Fran Downplays Scandal
Once again, one of our favorite Sun Times reporters carries water for the mayor, his people, and a completely corrupt testing process:
- The oral portion of a 2006 Chicago Police lieutenant's exam will be offered for a second time in response to "a number of complaints" from test-takers about equipment malfunctions.
"While the number of applicants who expressed concern is relatively small in comparison to the total number of applicants who participated in the oral portion of the exam, our goal is to ensure that the overall exam is administered in a fair and consistent manner," Human Resources Commissioner Jacqueline King said in a press release.
The oral exam uses a CD, a laptop computer and a tape recorder. Some lieutenant hopefuls complained that the CD started or stopped at the wrong time, adversely affecting their performance.
That isn't a portion of the article - that 's the whole damn article. From what we've been publishing here, we must be light years ahead of any truly investigative journalism in this town. Nothing about how proctors screwed up, nothing about how it's taken months upon months to come up with this BS solution, nothing about how no one is going to find out where they stand before deciding whether or not to re-take the test, and nothing about how everyone has the questions in hand and the supposed "spontaneity" and thinking on your feet has completely gone out the window.

Isn't a journalist held to a standard of journalistic integrity and ethics? Shouldn't a journalist objectively examine the facts and if they are not presented investigate. If their inquiries are stymied by the city that should be illustrated. In Chicago this seldom to never occurs unless the hand is forced.
There is a horrible pattern of media collusion within the Chicago press with the "Powers To Be"
The air media has ignored the story entirely, the print media has barely reported upon it or presented a skewed view.
This pattern extends in all facets of police/media interaction. There are some officers who have been demonized and tried in the media while others and other issues are entirely ignored. People who count are now watching and taking effective action.
If you have been harmed by any of this,now is the time to contact good legal representation from outside the City of Chicago.
Bigger is not always better, a talented aspiring attorney will run circles around a "Big Name Firm" and cost alot less. Don't discount the capablities of the city at reaching into the court system.

Yesterday, I called the Sergeant's Association to inquire about what is being done to address the do-over exam. I was told that they are in touch with their attorneys and discussing our legal recourse. Also, the call-taker related that whatever action they intend to take should be posted on the Sergeant's Association website by Friday.
I hope this true. Already there's clamor about dunping PB&PA if the ball is dropped on this one.
If you took this exam, please call our Union and apply pressure. If we let the City get away with this nonsense, who knows what it will try next.

Hey, I've got a question for you guys up in 016. Whats the policy for writing family members of coppers traffic tickets? The reason I ask is because I just learned that a friend of mine was written a ticket by a officer named Travis in 016 the other night. Travis says my buddy was speeding 15 mph over the limit. My buddy doesn't nor did he contest or dispute the fact that he was speeding. He did however ask if he could get a break because his father, his grandfather and his uncle are all Chicago Police Officers. In addition, he is a Marine who served in Iraq. No only did he serve, he also left one of his eyes there and lost the use of his arm after being wounded. In other words, he gave up a substanial part of his well being for us. And how does Travis repay him you ask? He writes him a traffic ticket. I've NEVER seen a sorrier excuse for a Police Officer than this Travis. How can anybody write the family of a member of the CPD, particularly one who served his country and was wounded in the process. What has this department come to.
Aside from all the questions that could be raised by this info, what also is not in the article is the fact that they're not going to change the questions. They are going to get exactly the same stuff they had on their 1st try. I guess some boss's kid is going to get made.

I also agree that it is a slap in the face to everyone. We should be marching down Michigan Ave. where everyone can see and be reminded that officers haven given there lives making this city safe for its residents.

I will be marching but I have to agree with the previous posts. Could we be put in a place less seen by then general public than where we will be; sandwiched between Soldier Field and the Lake? The purpose of St. Judes has nothing to do with "being seen by the public". The only public around at 8am on a Sunday morning on Michigan are the police anyway. The new route is far more suitable for the "real purpose" of St Judes. The purpose is to honor fallen police officers and where better to do that than at the police memorial and on the grounds of Soldier Field which was named after the brave souls who served this country. Nobody should care which yuppies out for their morning Starbucks might happen to see us. Now we can have a proper service in a place dedicated to us in the shadow of a place dedicated to those who protect even "us".
One other thing.....
There are 8,000 Chicago POlice officers residing in 016. Each of them has family members. Let's just say each one has 4 family members...2 parents a wife and 1 spoilt brat. That's 32,000 people who think that they are above the law plus the original 8,000 cops comes to 40,000 people in one district who think they do not have to obey traffic laws. I think that makes for a very dangerous driving environment. Keep up the good work P/O Travis. Drive safely and you wont get hurt.

What brothers are driving in 016? The district if full of children of police and firemen who expect and demand breaks despite driving recklessly in neighborhoods. Travis has the ethics to write serious violators who are a threat in a car. How many off duty officers seriously DUI driving 80 MPH refuse to pull over in 16th district? Serious problem being ignored. One officer in 016 is actually working and everyone slams him. At least he is on street making stops. Alcohol/DUI is a serious problem that will not go away. Haven't we learned from Abbate?

You’re right, you’ve never seen him, and you were not there, but you are willing to start dragging this copper through the mud over it. You are taking your friends word for whatever happened. All your really complaining about is a copper that is doing his job and not believing every one who has a sob story or claims to have a relative on the job. Here is a little known fact that might help you in your career, people lie. If you just believe every excuse given to you, or any one who asks for a break because they have family on the job nobody would get arrested and nobody would get any tickets. I urge the Sergeant's Association to seek an injunction stopping the June re-test.
If a number of candidates experienced problems during the January Oral Assessment Exercise, then the City should investigate to verify these problems (our entire encounter w/ proctors was recorded on a second tape recorder) and provide a remedy narrowly tailored to remediate the affected candidates.
The scores of 650+ candidates that did not experience problems on the oral portion should not be affected by a remedy created to address the issues of less than 40 candidates.

It does not fit the liberal media's agenda, it will never stop. The press does not tell you the who, what, when, where, how, of the news. Their agenda has changed from reporting the news to changing the world. They have become another wing of the Democratic party. Time for a new media.

I live in 016, and I see a lot of people out this way driving like they own the street. That officer probably did your friend a favor.

Travis keep up the great work. Least when another car calls for a assist you go and the dogs on 1624 are to worried about writting a parking ticket. there are alot of dogs on midnights and Travis you are not one of them.
Two things:
First the 016 officer about whom it is stated only writes "whitey". I am a white guy, and have worked in predominately black districts during my career. I wrote plenty of tickets on black people, but there were no white people around to write. Black area black customers. I never felt that I was preforming a racist act, only doing my job. So's the guy from 16.
Second: St. Jude parade. Having the parade at or near the memorial is perfect. As has been stated here in other posts, this is not about being seen by the public, it is about being seen by and supporting the Gold Star Family members. After finished marching, I went back and watched from across the street from the stand. You only have to look at the faces of the families to see what it means to them. I heard some of them thanking coppers for coming and helping with the day. Imagine, them thanking us. Moms and dads who lost their sons, wives who lost husbands, kids who lost parents. And they are grateful to us. Unbelievable.
Sitting in traffic bothered you? Try to remember that the world is bigger than what is convenient to you. For 3-4 hours a year, you are asked to think about and do something for someone besides yourself. It is the least that any of us can do. For the 23rd year in a row, I was proud to be there.
