Nanny State Antics

What's the purpose of going to a bar if you can't smoke?

Oh yeah, the alcohol. But still, this would seem to be a little bit overboard:
  • Get ready to snuff out those cigarettes. Illinois lawmakers have voted to ban smoking in bars, restaurants and other public workplaces.
  • The legislation passed the House 73-42 Tuesday and now goes to Gov. Rod Blagojevich, who supports the ban "enthusiastically." If he signs the measure, the smoking restrictions would take effect Jan. 1 and make Illinois the 19th state the country to impose such a ban.
Why can't the market place decide this? Why do we need to have decisions that ought to be left up to business owners and the public at large be legislated by busybodies who end up wasting more taxpayer dollars through BS like this?

If we want to hang out at a bar, we know there might be smokers there. And that's our choice to go in, order a beer and hang out in a certain atmosphere. It's also a choice made by those who work there. If a business owner can't hire waitstaff because of smoking, then the business owner will adjust to the economic realities of a situation. If patrons stop going to a certain joint because they don't like the way their clothes smell, a business will adapt. It's called economic reality and a free market will regulate itself into balance. Blanket legislation like this has and will continue to do more harm than good.

How is the governor proposing to enforce all these new bans anyway?

Problem is some folks might like to hang out and drink with their friends but cannot stand having to leave their clothes and hair at the door because they hate the smell.

I like to bowl, but why should I have to put up with smokers in the next lane? I know, find a different bowling alley. But hey, how about YOU looking around for a smoking bowling alley instead of me having to look for a non smoking one? If you want to smoke, that's your choice, but I dont think because you have freedom of choice to smoke, I should have no freedom from smelling like an ashtray when I come home from ANY establishment.

Remember, your freedom ends where mine begins.

we=government, you=the people....we know better than you, we know what's good for you, we will provide for you and take care of you; you will not smoke, you will wear a seat belt inside of a car; we will take your guns, you will be safe; just hand over most of your income in taxes and fees....signed, your local Democratic party...

some socialistic or communistic ideas there?

We knew it was coming! No smoking anywhere. What ever happened to the right to make your own decisions? I am so sick of the Government sticking its nose into everything. I firmly believe that if you buy a building, pay the mortgage, pay the license fees, pay the taxes, pay the employees, YOU, as the business owner, should have the right to make the ultimate decision if smoking should be allowed in your establishment or not. Put up a great big neon sign stating "THIS IS A SMOKING ESTABLISHMENT" OR "THIS IS A NON-SMOKING ESTABLISHMENT" Let the customers and or employees decide if they want to patronize and or work at this place. But come on, give the smokers a place to go and have a drink and a smoke and relax. If smoking is that damn bad for you, make it illegal and be done with it already.

Set up your garage like a bar and hang out in there. you and the boys can smoke cigs or cigars and no one says anything. Plus, you dont have to worry about the jagoffs with the beer muscles. and most important point, theres no video in the garage.

"But hey, how about YOU looking around for a smoking bowling alley instead of me having to look for a non smoking one?"

And therein lies the problem with this smoking ban: Smokers will NOT have a choice. Some of us choose to smoke, the rest of you may not like it. Fine. Some of you choose to gamble. I don't like it. I don't go to casinos. Even Steven. But the government is now telling me I don't have a choice. Nevermind the health effects, pollution probably causes more lung disease than smoking, it's a matter of, like SCC said, letting the market dictate these things. An all out ban is akin to alcohol prohibition. You hate the smell? Fine, GO SOMEWHERE ELSE! Unbelieveable....

Too many laws , too many pols telling others what's good or not for them, too much government intrusion in all of our lives, too many ie. Fast EDDIES Burk deciding what personal freedom should consist of....

There should be smoking establishments (taverns, restaurants, coffee houses etc.)
where the business investors decide ...This is a smoking or non smoking premise.

If you don't like the smoke don't enter , work, or meet friends there choose a different location.

I don't smoke but if I were a smoker I'd be very upset now about the casual way the "Law" is shoved down my throat.

Don't tell me that second hand smoke in a restaurant , well vented and with a smokers section apart from the non smokers is more harmful to me that a casual stroll down Dearborn during the rush hour with busses spewing the fumes, construction debris flying in the air, and general filthy conditions of a busy city.

Like the years of prohibition I expect the civil disobedience to increase in this matter of "choice vs. non-choice" society we live in.

Who is going to enforce this new "Law"?

The government wants to ban smoking everywhere, but they also tax the shit out of a pack of cigarettes.....kind of ironic. If everybody quits smokeing the city and county would loose so much money. That extra money would need to come from somewhere.... raise property taxes. No matter where you live in the city you can drive for about a half hour and pay about $3.60 a pack instead of $7.00, it worth the drive if your a smoker. If your such a bitch that you dont like your clothes smelling like smoke, then dont go to a bar, because its common knowledge that people smoke in bars. I agree that it should be the choice of the owner of the bar to have a smoking or non-smoking establishment. Ten years ago we would not even be having this conversation, I hate seeing the direction that this liberal society is heading. Whats next, a law saying that you cannot smoke in your own home or vehicle?

I do not smoke but have a problem with such wide spread bans as this. Fine if the State wants to ban smoking in State Buildings. However, a restaurant or Bar owner should have the choice of offering smoking or non-smoking. I would probably choose a non smoking bar but people should have a choice. When the Government starts dictating personal habits whats next? You are allowed 1 big mac a week? You can have 2 drinks a night? You must have 2 servings of vegetables a day? When will it stop? And who do they want to enforce it? I know I won't. You non smokers be careful of what you wish for, it just may open the pandora's box against things you do.

I wonder if that will be a positive or negative for the Olympic bid. A lot of people in the world like to smoke and if they can afford to travel here and pay what I am sure will be rip off rates for everything they can afford to smoke too. Is there any site that a person can go to to let the Olympic committee know that as a taxpayer here I do not want it. I am sure there are other people who feel the same way. If Daly wants it so bad it can not be good and we will get screwed worse than we are now by the political families who rule us now.

Hypocritical-

If you want to ban smoking in public fine. Stop selling cigarettes, cigars, pipe tobacco etc.

Want the tax revenue but dont want the smokers.

Heck- I dont drink so lets abolish establishments that sell alcohol? Geez how much would the Kingdom of Daley loose? or the State?

Check out to see what you lungs look like after smoking 20 years. See what smoking does to lungs for a non-smoker. Yeah, it's all about choice to smoke or not. But, health risk outways the simple pleasure of inhaling slow death.
Again, it's a matter of choice.
