Steve Chapman Gets It...

...why can't anyone else?
  • We've all heard of the offense of "driving while black." But not everyone has heard the good news: It doesn't exist anymore. According to an authoritative report, black motorists are no more likely than whites to be pulled over by police. So how has that study been greeted? As proof that police racism is still a powerful force.

It's a widely accepted article of faith that cops systematically engage in racial profiling against dark-complexioned folks. Yet this is the second consecutive survey from the federal Bureau of Justice Statistics—using information supplied not by police but by citizens—that finds law enforcement to be admirably colorblind when it comes to routine traffic enforcement. Not a puny achievement, but one that was overlooked by people straining to find lingering discrimination.
  • Whatever they do, the cops can't win. Blacks don't get stopped more often? Big deal. Blacks have higher arrest rates? Proof of racism. More blacks are let off without a warning? More proof of racism.

And if fewer blacks were let off without a warning? I'll let you guess how that would be interpreted.
Go read the entire article. It's an amazing piece of writing and we're surprised it ever saw the light of day. Seriously.

Is this just because the cops are pulling over more white people?

Sure seems like it.

Same old story. If you work in a black neighborhood, of course most of the people you stop will be black. If you work up in 016, most of the people you stop will be white. I wish people would finally give up the race card. Its getting extremely old!!!!!!!!!

I think the KING OF POLICE 43x should develop a new traffic study. Just ask him he will tell you so.

Will the revenue generating red light cameras catch more whites than blacks? If so will that be considered driving while white?

Good article, unfortunately, few people will see it. A good book on the topic is "Are Cops Racist?" by Heather Mac Donald, should be required reading for the ACLU.

If a unit is stopped by an inspector out side of his district and that district is one of many that is predominantly one race is it a valid defense to say they went out of the district to write tickets to people of another race so as not to appear racist and reflect badly in the surveys.

I think Chapman should be fired! How dare he write an article that portrays BOTH sides of the story? I'm kidding of course.

How on earth did this article slip past his editors?

Keep up the good writing Chapman.

Off topic a bit.....But did anyone see that Aurora is passing an ordinance prohibiting the practice of driving around in a car while waving flags from the windows/sunroof? Kind of puts a crimp in the cinco de mayo/puerto rican festivities, doesn't it? HOORAY FOR AURORA...LETS GO CHICAGO, GET ON BOARD!

I didn't read the article.

But I saw something last week regarding traffic stops and the ratio of arrests of non-white vs. white drivers. What the tv news failed to state was, of those arrested why were they arrested? No drivers license, driving on a suspended license, revoked license,
or a warrant of some type?

If that information was available to the media
it seems it should been
part of the story.

In the instances of the above listed violations
the social and economic
ills of society, in my opinion, should be blamed, as the liberals
are known to do; not
the police.

How fast would it all be turned around if a driver
that should be arrested
is not, then drives down the road and runs some poor slob over?

The accusations of in- attention to duty would be flying.

The news did a follow up report to the "Why are they still driving" series, last week.

Every single driver, male or female, who promised the judge they weren't driving, then left the courtroom and drove away from the courthouse parkinglot in their cars were Black or Hispanic as I watched it.

A coincidence?

A true to test to see if the police are racist is to conduct the traffic stop study, and then to study case reports. What is the ratio of minorities listed as offenders compared to the general population? A crucial part of good police work is to use the traffic laws to parlay into an investigative stop. There is nothing wrong or racist about that. Traffic laws were created for public safety, but they can also assist police in curbing violent crime. It is counter to common sense not to use the traffic laws. Good police work dictates not racial profiling, but crime profiling.
