Department Backs and Covers

  • Police Sergeant Kirkland Crossley says the FN-5.7 bullets can go through 48 layers of Kevlar.

"We recovered ten shell casings, and this weapon is known to carry at least 20 rounds in the magazine."

WBBM: How often do you see this type gun on the street?

"Very first time, very first time I've seen it, and I've been on the job 15 years now. And by far this is probably the most dangerous handgun that I've come across."

Sergeant Crossley says, compared to the FN-5.7, what police carry is a slingshot.
  • Now police are downplaying Crossley's remarks.

Sergeant Steven Sesso, rangemaster for the Chicago Police Department, called to say there are six types of ammunition the FN-5.7 fires. Only three types, he says, are available commercially. The other three? Only sold to military and law enforcement. And he says those three are the only types that can penetrate body armor.

Sergeant Sesso says it is unlikely the rounds fired yesterday were body-piercing. But he cannot be sure.

"Without having the actual round in hand - just having the cartridge casings - it's not absolutely 100 percent positive what round."

Sergeant Sesso says, "We don't want to cause panic."
Panic among the citizens? Or among the coppers who might be facing this gun? Sgt. Crossley's comments may have been ill advised, but they're out there and now he's going to pay a price. Sgt. Sesso plays the company man and attempts to smooth over the controversy while admitting he has no idea what was fired out of the gun. And as someone pointed out in a comment, thank goodness material has never ever disappeared from a government warehouse or gun shop or even the Evidence and recovered Property Section for that matter.

Channel 7 also covers the story.

UPDATE 0200 hours this morning: Crossley dumped to midnights already? See the comments section. Can anyone confirm?

Want to be that there is also a CR# on Crossley for making unauthorized comments to the media. Remember the general order about all comments coming from media affairs or the Superintendent or his authorized representative. Right or wrong Crossley should be the poster boy for the department's free speech movement.

Against an FN 5.7, I wouldn't feel "outgunned" with my 4" S&W Pre-Model 10 M&P.

One hit with a Federal .38 158gr. LSWC-HP beats twenty misses with a .22 every time.

Kirk has always talked waaaaay too much. He shouldn't have been giving all that information to the press. Some of the stuff he said may have been totally wrong, which could be used as reasonable doubt during a trial. Let Monique and Pat do the talking. However, he was right about the danger!

On a gun-related note, did anyone catch Channel 7's fluff piece last night on Gun Crime in Chicago?

As usual, the little gang-banger darlings & assorted street scum are NOT to blame for the mayhem. It's the GUNZ doing the shooting, not the 17-year-old dropout sociopaths hangin' and bangin' on the hood street corners.

As soon as I saw Father Asshat Pfleger there on the panel, I knew it would be a long and tedious evening of blaming everyone and everything in sight...but the real perps.

That goof did cause a bunch of panic. Last night I had to return a call to my freaked out mother, and explain how she does not have to worry not to mention the emails i got from freinds telling me my vest is no good. Im guessing there are less fn 5.7s out then there are 5o caliber rifles( we recover those alllllllll the time). Im sure that pistol will be easily traced. Its my understanding the ammo that will penetrate the vest is not for sale to the general public. In addition I dont belive the regular ammo is readily avalabile.Furthermore your vest wont stop a rifle round any way.
We all know that.Do your job as normal and worry about any gun jagoff might have. At no time time in the near or distant future will the mutts on the street be armed with the f.n.
However Ill put money down that some know nothing political hack tries to ban them in the next week.

Crossly may have been correct.

AND

Sesso may have been correct.

Better to not tell the general public the WHOLE truth than to be forthright and honest.

This is the way the goverment either Federal, State, County or local municipality have done business for a very long time.

If Crossley was to have told a bold-face lie on the local TV news what would the outcome of that event be? HMMM...truth may have sent him to the 1st watch so a lie would have rewarded him with what? A merit promotion to LT or Commander and straight days weekends off job at HQ?

Sgt. Crossley is a stupid, stupid man who is constantly saying and doing stupid sh*t. He was on Midnights and temporarily filled an opening on the Tactical Team. When he was dumped from the Tactical Team because of his stupidity and the fact that no one wanted to work for him, he was on a scholarship on days, bumping a far more capable Sergeant than he. He sold the BRAND NEW DC on some lame brained 2nd watch mission team, likened to the system in 009 on 3rd Watch. Basically he proposed to start another Tactical Team under his exclusive control, stealing personnel from the watches. (We can't get time as it is now!) He has been counselled several times for saying things on the radio and doing things that middled those working under him.
The entire watch wanted him gone and now he is. Frankly, who cares why! Sorry 1st Watch, but you have him back.

well you know what, Sgt. Crossley atleast had the brain to broadcast over the zone the information as it relates to officer safety!! It was a judgement call made on scene and who can blame him for it? If it is true that he was dumped to midnights, then shame on this rotten Dept. and those spineless pricks at 35th & Mich! Trust me, there's no outcry from the communities regarding these bullets, it was an issue of CPD not being equiped like every other major police Dept. That's ok, I will continue to carry my Bushmaster AR-15 w/ military surplus ammo in the trunk of the squad.

He may be right, but I doubt these gangsters are paying the type of money needed to buy those bullets. The point is, he should not be making statements to the media regarding his expertise on firearms. He took time 11-12 years ago for an on duty shooting in 007. He fired an unregistered handgun that was not approved by the department. Now he's a sgt. Thank God I only have 4 years left.

Since we're talking about guns here. Some of you may or may not know about this incident. On 20 April 2005 @ 1800 hrs in the 021st district P.O. G. Williams responded to a citizens report of a man with a gun at 35th Indiana. While looking into this matter he came across an individual fitting the description given to him by said citizen. When Williams approached this individual he fled on foot. A brief foot chase ensued and though I don't know all the details, the jagoff took a shot at Williams who returned fire missing this a$$ hole. The offender was apprehended, weapon recovered and charges approved. By thee way this assclown was wearing a vest when this happened. On todays date the trial ended with the asshat being found guilty a jury of attempted murder of a police officer, uuw and aggravated discharge of a firearm. Thank God the justice system works. To Williams who I am told is now a Sgt and from what I'm told he's one of the good ones, excellent job. Too bad you missed. Also great job to the Dets. and ASA's on the case.

Gee I've seen Daley at a conference talking about more politians getting on board about gun laws because two more Chicago Public School children that have died from guns. Hey Dick, what about enforcing the laws on the books now. For example a buddy of mine told me on June 6th in the late night sometime a f/69 called her house was burglarized. This occurred approximately 2200-2400 W 71st st. in the Chicago Lawn District. The women told police the man took her gun out of her bedroom. The gun was not secure!! It was taken out of her dresser drawer. So here is my question why was she not arrested for failing to secure her gun with a trigger lock, or cable such as the ones issured to officers by Chicago Police Dept. Now another gun on the street and an existing law was not used to arrest the owner of the gun.

Yes "Idiot" you are correct, but my point was the gun was loaded in a dresser drawer. If she went a little further with securing her firearm it may not have been easily taken. I for one unload my pistol, two I use a trigger lock on my pistol, three place the pistol in a locked device i.e. gun locker, and four keep the room locked that the locker is located. There are four layers keeping my gun out of the wrong hands when the pistol is not on my side. The gun owner took no precautions for securing her gun, none, nada!!!

1. Trigger locks are dangerous, especially on semi-automatic pistols. It is ridiculously easy to chamber and fire a round WITH the trigger lock installed. The instructor at my NRA instructors class demonstrated this to us. You're better off putting a cable lock through the magazine well and ejection port on a semi-auto or putting a handcuff or padlock around the top strap of a revolver. If you can't load it, you can't shoot it.

2. A trigger lock on a firearm in a safe or security container is simply silly to me, but that's up to you. You're better off with the container alone. At least it can't be used to fire the gun.
