Shades of Our Childhood
Cook County Forest Preserve District commissioners voted today to tear down the toboggan slides at Swallow Cliff and regrade the hill for sledding, saying it would cost too much to repair the beloved winter attraction.
Slides at three other forest preserves also would be removed as a result of the decision, which came over the objections of two Southland commissioners.
It's too bad that this litigious society and an incompetent Cook County government couldn't come up with some way to make this winter tradition something we could have taken our children to. Some of our best memories of winter involved the slides, wind burned faces and hot chocolate.

To maintain the chutes, I'd willingly pay a fee and say OK to a tax increase. Do you realize how little it would take to fix the chutes compared to what the County throws away every year?
I guess it's more important for the Toddster to keep handing out jobs and spending money on bullshit, rather than make a good expenditure on something that so many people have enjoyed for so many years.

cook county government is disfunctional, and has been for a long time...over taxed, with bloated positions and agencies....but, the taxpayers are sheep, they continue to vote Democratic, like their fathers and forefathers...in a county as big as Cook, one would think that many of the voters would wake up and move toward good and effective government, but no.....the political and fiscal corruption continues unabated, without missing a beat...maybe Stroger (father and son) and his ilk should qualify for an award of sorts, i.e., "most years fleesing the taxpayers without getting indicted by the feds"...

We don't get enough snow for the use of toboggan slides. Hell, most of you don't even know what a toboggan is? I don't even think they make those old wooden ones anymore. Besides most of you wouldn't go out in the cold, you would rather watch TV or eat.

SCC made the mistake of assuming that the Cook County Forest Preserves exist to provide recreation areas and facilities to county residents. You are mistaken. It exists to provide jobs for political hacks.

It is going to be really funny when some kids get hurt because they will be flying down a 100yard hill with no control and the lawsuits start coming.
With the chutes built the way they were it was controled with the sled going straight down hill and enough at the bottom to come to a stop. You will now have numerous kids flying down these hills in all directions slamming into each other and then the parents suing of course
Have SWAP fix em.Just have the judge ask if the convicted is a trades person and viola,some real sweat equity for the taxpayers.

I especially love when I go to pay a water bill or buy a city vehicle sticker and the clerk helping me takes 15 minutes to do a task that takes the rest of america about three minutes to do. Cook County tore down the old stone building at Cermak Pool. Supposedly they are going to build a multi million dollar water park. This same park has a sign where the Cook County Police Memorial will hopefully some day be built. To build this memorial that will will include all the names of Chicago's Fallen Officers and every officer Killed In the Line of Duty in Cook County takes money. County donated the little piece of land it will be on but will not fork over one dime for it's construction. Chicago's Memorial drained all the possible big backers for donations. If anyone cares, they are always looking for donations to get this thing built. It will be located in the park at Ogden and Pershing Rd., in Lyons. Be Careful Out There.
Don't worry, there are plenty of wards in the City where illegal dumping will more than offset the loss of the toboggan slides. Michael Christopher told me its really easy to put one of these things up.

How right you are...there are so many more "When I was a kid, there used to be..." statements nowadays. The old Kiddie Land at McCormick & Devon, Riverview, the Jensen Slides (soon, I'm sure), Sunset DriveIn. With the Toddler treating jobs like his own Sprint Friends & Family plan, there's never going to be anything left for the good things in life.
Why even whine and complain on here. No body is going to do anything about it. We just take it and the politicians know it. Take care of the ones that make the most noise and screw the rest. At all levels they are taking care of their friends and family's and friend's families. Lady friends and mistresses. We have a huge house and senate at State level and three people decide what goes forward and what gets voted on. Why do we need all the other people. They pass laws that no one can investigate them and can do what they will with impunity. Election time comes around and there we are,"Thank you sir may I have another".

Honestly, when is the last time that we've had enough snow to have the tobaggon slides open for more than a couple of days a year? I loved them too as a kid, but it has been years since we've had the kind of winters we use to have in the past.
Anybody know the story on John Stroger, often referred to on the South Side as "President Stroger." Is he dead or alive? Maybe he's on ice in the basement at AR Leak or Gus Cage's place. Is he collecting a pension from the county?
