If an employee's misconduct cost a private company millions of dollars or caused public embarrassment, that employee would be fired. No doubt about it.
But no such punishment faces Chicago police officers found liable for abusing the people they have sworn to serve and protect. Instead of firing those cops, the city keeps paying the victims -- hundreds of millions of dollars over the years -- for beatings, false arrests or illegal searches. And the cops get to keep their jobs. How much more will it cost before the city gets rid of rogue cops?

In the first example, no mention is made of the judge who banned the testimony that stated in part that NO determination could be made where the DNA on the screw driver came from (animal or human) . And no mention is made at all that shoving the pointed end of screwdriver in someone's rectum is going to be leaving great gaping tears, not a quarter inch slit.
The second case was strong enough to have a State's Attorney approve charges and tried in front of a jury. The guy charged was prosecuted on a number of incriminating statements he himself made to the State. Yet the police are the only ones liable?
And of course, the writers bring up the Abbate video, ignoring the fact that Abbate was a drunk and the warning signs were ignored by quite a large number of higher up supervisors because of the political connections. Maybe instead of asking how much "rogue cops" are costing the city, someone ask how much connected and "meri-clout-orious" political animals are bleeding the taxpayers?

personally...I have no beefs with the guys from s.o.s. in the districts and I do appreciate seeing them in the district where I live. but, if you work in a district now...I don't really care to see you in your hoodie (with s.o.s. logo) and skull cap (chose your favorite sports team or motorcycle company), there are plenty of uniform options to pick a warm one. if that was the "uniform" in s.o.s. then make a call and go to a unit or a tact/ gang team and dress anyway you please. otherwise, please, have a little respect for the uniform. and no...I'm not jealous and I don't wear a uniform now...but, if i did, I would wear it the right way !

As a long time Chicago Cop, I can easily explain this concept well.
Many of the bosses come from political connections... where greed and corruption is rampant. These bosses are not angels. And when they in turn pick other bosses they have to select ones they have "sinned" with to keep them happy (and quiet). Additionally, no boss wants anybody looking smarter or better than them, so they in turn pick people who will not out-shine them.
That is why so many people voted for Bill Clinton. He was a complete mess. From his personal relationships, his lies about it and his party boy appearance. Who out there really doesn't feel better about themselves when they can look at the President of the USA and say, wow, I have so many less things wrong with me and my family members that the President.
Most if not nearly all of the bosses DON'T want people who can recognize problems and offer solutions, because then they actually have to do something about it and take a chance on something with the possibility of it failing. They surround themselves with people who do nothing but tell them how much of a God they are and how everything is perfect ever since they became the big boss.
It is a circle of complete incompetence. We have officers who have elected to stay either P.O.'s or Detectives simply because they don't want to sell their souls or be forced not use the intelligence the Lord has graced them. They stay at their low level position and do it fantastically.
The "thin blue line" is nothing to the "fat white line"... They will stop at nothing to keep getting fatter at all of our expense. The WHITE SHIRT EXEMPT CLUB is most protective club their is on this job.
In the old days it was thick envelopes of cash. Today it has been replaced with borderline legal bribes. From being put on some corporate board with a salary for no work, being informed where to buy property at very low values where the Government is going to spend MILLIONS to improve the area and making big $$$$$$ in profits to the various free memberships to various organizations, social clubs and golf clubs. But don't think for a second there still isn't some cash envelopes being handed out also.
Also every illegal criminal organization from the Mob, Street Gangs to Cartel Drug Dealers have a connection on this job. Some of these connections are outright and some are indirect. There are many bosses on this job who have something they have done (either illegally or sexually) being held over them to have favors and things done.
My dad and brothers and I have almost a total of 90 years with the CPD, seen everything I just wrote about and heard about stuff I don't even want to repeat.
The advice told to me that I have always used, Trust NOBODY, Say Nothing and do the best you can and enjoy this job. Enjoy the perks we still have left and never put yourself in the position of being used later.

I don't know if you want to start a new thread or leave this here, but yesterday (11 Nov 07) Area 5 HGS had a closed door roll call. During this roll call certain detectives were informed that future police involved shootings are going to be investigated by OPS and the State's Attorney's Office, while experienced homicide detectives just stand by doing nothing.
Most of us know that the majority of "witnesses" to police shootings are nothing but lying pieces of shit with an agenda, and more often than not we (the detectives) can prove their full of shit based on the evidence.
I know many patrolman don't like the detectives but the detectives assigned to police shootings across the city are usually some of the most experienced detectives around. If the malcontents from OPS and the ASA's office begin to take over they are going to take the word of the lying gangbangers on face value without any corroboration or challenging their version of what happened. The minute one of these "witnesses" alleges some type of police misconduct I can see the focus of the investigation switching directly to a criminal investigation, and maybe charging, of the police officer(s) involved.
The clowns from OPS and the ASA's office are not experienced investigators and wouldn't know how to conduct an investigation if their political hack lives depended on it.
If this idea does in fact come to be our UNION better step up, because if they don't I can see good, honest, and innocent cops being railroaded by two agencies hell bent on making a name for themselves.
To all you guys and gals on the street I offer one bit of advice: If your life or the life of another police officer is not in jeopardy let these assholes kill one another. Forget the protection of life policy when it comes to anyone but the police. Be careful.

OK, maybe we weren't clear. We were pointing out that the editorial picked two of the weakest cases that they could have in painting CPD as full of "rogue" officers. The two cited cases had no business anywhere near a courtroom. None at all.
The Abbate thing has turned into a bad joke. Every single time something goes wrong, here comes the Abbate case! Abbate was an aberration. We haven't found a person yet who supported his actions. The only beef is the over-the-top criminal charges, but to a man (or woman) everyone supports his being fired.

The Department of Law will not vigorously litigate any of these suits. If they did, and won a major victory, many of the so called justice law firms would be put out of business.

One good case, that is all it takes. One good scandalous case that the city fights vigorously and wins and the ball game is all over. It will not happen.

okay idiots, shove this up your ass: a screwdriver, one of a few, was found in the glovebox. this particular screwdriver tested positive for a chemical consistent w/ fecal matter. NOT dna, blood or fecal matter matching suing shitbird. look in any squad trunk, behind seats or glovebox and 2 of 3 will contain multiple hammers, baseball bats, sticks, pipes, knives, asst. hand tools and YES screwdrivers. all confiscated from fine citizens or arrestees looking to rob, batter or burglarize someone or thing. picture all those homeless hypes who scrap or burglarize, that get locked up constantly with tools on them. they are the filthiest of all. there is fecal matter all over their clothes. you know, the ones that everyone has to come look at to see who is causing the gross smell that fills the whole station. you can bet that a lot of their tools, when subject to testing, would reveal traces of blood or a chemical consistent w/ fecal matter. OK, maybe we weren't clear. We were pointing out that the editorial picked two of the weakest cases that they could have in painting CPD as full of "rogue" officers. The two cited cases had no business anywhere near a courtroom. None at all.
The Abbate thing has turned into a bad joke. Every single time something goes wrong, here comes the Abbate case! Abbate was an aberration. We haven't found a person yet who supported his actions. The only beef is the over-the-top criminal charges, but to a man (or woman) everyone supports his being fired.
So to the first comment, you are badly mistaken. To the second, we've been calling it as we see it since the beginning. The media has been using the wrong examples to make their cases since the beginning. If you believe for a second that anyone stuck a screwdriver up someone's ass, you are sadly deluded.

i worked in the same district as Abbate. i never saw him drunk at work. i don't know how a boss could discipline him if it is not job related. he was hammered off-duty and supposedly a legendary drunk. but at work, i never saw him drunk. maybe others know more?

We have a screwdriver in our glove box. 1. Its easier to pop off the plastic hubcaps on our outdated tires than with the stupid jack they give us...that bar can crack the plastic cap
2. Having a screwdriver handy helps start that hot car
3. Our pdt mount is broken. The ONLY way to remove our pdt is to take a screwdriver (or stick or something) and pry the release mechanism up from the bottom.
So there you have it. I don't do dope. Could care less what someone puts up their ass. And don't often use a screwdriver. But it is a handy tool, and you are a useless tool.
Almost forgot....was on a detail a few years back, some stupid antiwar protest...stepped in a horse pile...used a .....drumroll please....screwdriver! Next time I will use your back.....

personally...I have no beefs with the guys from s.o.s. in the districts and I do appreciate seeing them in the district where I live. but, if you work in a district now...I don't really care to see you in your hoodie (with s.o.s. logo) and skull cap (chose your favorite sports team or motorcycle company), there are plenty of uniform options to pick a warm one. if that was the "uniform" in s.o.s. then make a call and go to a unit or a tact/ gang team and dress anyway you please. otherwise, please, have a little respect for the uniform. and no...I'm not jealous and I don't wear a uniform now...but, if i did, I would wear it the right way !

Addendum X of CPD General Order 07-69 specifically requires officers to use a sterilized twelve inch titanium forceps when extracting contraband from the lower colon of a subject. Furthermore, this procedure must be in full compliance with the U.S. Supreme Court guidelines in Estate of Uranus v. City of New York, 133 S. Ct. 1069.

I've been on the job for two years now and hear conflicting stories on TRU. Will someone please tell me the qualifications to get on the TRU unit? I hear it's an elite unit, and you must have something in your background to be there. I know I only have two years on an still have alot to learn but some of my classmates are going to TRU and they were the jokes of the class.
Question for the Detective on police shootings: If the patrol Sergeant arrives on the scene first and quickly advises the involved officer of his rights per Miranda will that allow him to avoid speaking to OPS or the ASA? We have to figure out a way to get around having these clowns interview us as an administrative issue, then after they interview mookie who says the po-po shot the alter boy for no reason, use our statements criminally.

Call the unit yourself, I'm sure they will answer your questions.
The best way to learn the job is by doing. If you meet the time requirement, apply. If you are taken you can always leave if it's not what you expected.
Finally, ignore the nay sayers.

I'll take it one step further....the news had a special a few years ago about fecal matter...they took random TOOTHBRUSHES and had them tested...yup. 100% of toothbrushes tested have fecal matter. My point? Poop travels. Did the tester use a control- ie a set of random screwdrivers? I bet they would have trace poop on them as well.... Please name the two nations we've liberated. The economy is rolling along?! You must be heavily invested in defense department industries. Don't you think the BILLIONS of dollars spent over there could help more Americans here. Why do some Americans feel the need of our government to help other nations,but are totally against helping their fellow Americans. I heard this sentiment while serving overseas,"Yankee go home."
