Custodial Death

  • An unidentified man died in custody early Sunday after scuffling with officers on a CTA bus, Chicago police said.

Officers were called to the 7900 block of South Vincennes Avenue after the man caused a disturbance aboard the bus, Officer John Mirabelli said.

"The offender became combative, resisted arrest and physically attacked the officers," Mirabelli said.
And then, for no obvious reason, the subject died.

So-called "civil rights" activists, storefront "reverends" and all manner of ambulance chaser will be lined up before the body has been autopsied or chemical tested to declare that the police beat, tied up, strangled, cuffed, stuffed and sodomized the deceased with a screwdriver before leaving him to die in the parking lot of the 006th District.

Then the City will give someone a few million dollars and everyone will be happy.

Except the coppers from 006 who will be dragged through the mud, be tarred, feathered, publicly scolded and lose more than a little bit of sleep over the next few days, months and possibly years before being cleared.

Read the MINS. Several people called/flagged down the police about this goof on the bus. He tried to drive off with the CTA bus at one point. The 2 P.O.'s got injured (minor, but still...)

Just say no to drugs!!!!

We need to have a law here that protects cops. Florida has the Baker Act. If you suspect an individual has mental issues, you can transport them to a facility so they may handle it and it's out of an officer's hands.

sounds like this person had mental issues or drug problems...

Where are those guys that are doing CTA special??? Should they not be handling bus nonsense? Just see them doing bus checks.

I'm willing to bet the post mortem
(autopsy) will reveal a myriad of problems this guy had that eventually took it's toll on him.
I'll say a prayer for the cops that were injured protecting the CTA riders from this maniac.
It ain't easy working the streets of Gresham! Sometimes, I wish the Dept. could flipflop the troops, with large divisions of northside district cops doing a 3 month "detail" to the southside, and vice versa. We all have the same job, but depending on where you're assigned, it AIN'T the SAME job!!

We do have an option. We use it all the time. If they have mental issues, we bring them to the hospital! Local ER does just fine. You just fill out the involuntary admission form and explain what actions cause you to belive they are a danger to themself or others. Look up the order for mental transports. I don't know the order number or proper keyword off hand.

This brings to mind, how the 006th District lost PPO Doyle. RIP. And if I am not mistaken, very near this same address. Disturbance on a cta bus.

Both officers on that job are friends/partners of mine. Both are stand up, great cops. Of course the lambasting is going to start. It'll probably never be mentioned that he had a large metal pipe and was swinging it at them. They were within their rights according to the use of force module to put a bullet in that piece of shit's skull, but probably for fear of being sued, they didn't. Both have under 2 years on the job. There's also a pod on that corner, so if there's ever been a time to review the pod video, now would be the time, before shit hits the fan. I'm sure the news didn't report that he entered tried to enter the squad car driver's seat before the officers dragged him out and got cuffs on him. Wait for the toxicology reports to come back. I'm sure he was jacked up on meth, coke, or some other wonderful combination of substances.

Just for the record, the R/O's are stand up, fair, and great cops.

We call C.F.D. and they dispatch a Ambulance to the scene. It's out of our hands at that point unless the pt is combative which we can either transport ourselves or ride with the Ambulance

The guys from 006 are some of the best there. Both are workers, and very, very, good people.
I hate that either of them are on the end of this nonsense, because you're 100% correct about the public persecution set to ensue. I had a guy at my local little coffee spot(on the beat) ask me "So, the police killed someone over there?" "That is what all of the people are saying." I offered some clarification, but came away feeling sick to my stomach.
Even when you right, you wrong.

If you weren't there, you don't a have say or speculation about what happened, that goes for you jag off Jesse and dumbass AL-get a real JOB. I was there and it seems that a lot of people from certain neighborhoods have this real need for illegal and illicit drugs, thinking it will get rid of their problems. As we have seen it doesn't, just gets rid of the user. If the those "certain neighborhoods" want to get rid of the problems of drugs and and murder and mayhem then get a JOB and I dont mean selling drugs! By the end of a work day you will be so tired you won't want to do drugs, kill someone, beat your wife, or make illegitamate babies! STOP MAKING EXCUSES BECOME A PART OF THE SOLUTION!!

HOW MANY PEOPLE ARE AT CALL BACK NOW?

EVERYTIME I CALL 311 ITS A 10 MINUTE WAIT.

WITH ALL THE PEOPLE BEING STRIPPED I WOULD THINK THEY WOULD HAVE A 311 TACT TEAM. THE TACT TEAM WOULD HANDLE ALL THE MISSING CITY STICKER CASES.

WHERE DO ALL THE HEAVY PEOPLE GO? BECAUSE I NEVER SEE THEM AT CALL BACK.

OPS came out on this and was aggressively investigating the incident. This was a cut and dry case and the coppers did a great job. The new style OPS has adopted will be a problem during police shootings. Be afraid. They will be looking to lock a copper up, make sure its not you.

Here is a case where video will prevail and get the media to shut the f**k up. The Video on the bus of a mad man with a crow bar attacking a cta driver will be followed by the video from the currency exchange that the crazy guy chased the driver into. Of course, the great POD camera overhead probably didn't work, or didn't catch shit. With the independent non CPD source vidoes, the ambulance chaser lawyer will be hard pressed to put a case on these officers. Excited delerium strikes again! These coppers did nothing wrong. They showed unbelieveable restrain in not plastering the guys brains on the interior of their squad car.

I like the poster's comment about having a law that police can NOT be sued. How is the law supposed to be upheld when we're constantly getting legal action taken against US??? Maybe we should let them "po-lice" themselves for awhile...but hey, I'm just sayin'....

WE NEED TO START SUING THEM BACK!!!! WHEN THEY SIGN THE AFFADAVIT THAT IS BULLSHIT, SUE THEM BACK.

20 Nov 1900 hours, go to the FOP meeting and demand it.

18 Dec 1200 hours, go to the FOP meeting and demand it.

(I can't make the Nov meeting, but I'll meet ya at the Dec one!)

Let's face it folks, we all bitch about stuff, but we don't demand that our union (which we pay) do something about our problems.

Are you kidding me? The only thing coppers working special know how to do is show up to the scene, and say,"will you send a copy to mass transit." Well, since you're working for the CTA why don't you handle the job. My bad, there was no gun involved.

I'm sure the guys from 006 are great guys and I hope this works out for them, it sounds like it will, someone said they are the best of 006 and great cops, but then they say that they both have less than 2 yrs on the job, so they are just off probation maybe and they are working together and are already great cops? they will be great cops with more experience and time on the job but great already? what does that say about the rest of the people in 006?

the rest of us have a reasonable expectation that someone in police custody is not being mistreated. especially given the past history of some members of the CPD with respect to people in their custody, it is not unreasonable to take a close look at cases where someone in custody dies.

if there is video, it may well show the cops on the scene as standup guys.

That PPO Doyle situation on the CTA Bus (about 25/26 years ago) was a completely different scenario. Nobody searched the robbery suspect, who kept his hands in his overcoat the whole time (concealing two handguns he kept his hands on). PPO Doyle walked off the bus in front of the offender, who basically just killed the kid right there in the doorway to the bus. His FTO had two guns also, and had to use both, which probably saved his life, as he wounded the offender in the wrist, ending the gun battle. The offender was never searched or cuffed before they attempted to escort him off the bus. So much for having an astute FTO. I recall the FTO's name was Mantia. He got an award for bravery. PPO Doyle got a plaque on the wall of the Academy. Poor tactics got that PPO killed. Instructors at the Academy at that time told us that they noted PPO Doyle had a fear of blacks. That wasn't what got him killed. His FTO didn't bother to see that the bad guy was secured, even though the robbery victim who flagged them down in their squad told them prior to boarding the bus to "be careful, he's a mean one." Hopefully FTOs today are much more up to speed on safety and tactics.

How about cutting the two cops in 006 some slack?? Such a thing as MORAL SUPPORT comes in handy right now. Aren't we all in this job together?? They can be "great cops" and still have little time on the job. One of the two defended OUR country fighting in the Middle East. Maybe he has 2 years on the job, but still put HIS ass on the line...that speaks volumes. Rather than derogatory remarks about how they couldn't possibly be great cops yet, how about saying a prayer of thanks that they're ok, and another PPO Doyle incident didn't occur. Things could easily have turned South on Vincennes that night. But I'm just sayin....
