Baggage
Is there any exempt anywhere on this job that doesn't have a closet full of skeletons that would preclude them from becoming Superinendent? Anyone? For that matter, is there anyone at the rank of Captain who doesn't have the same baggage (besides Farrell)?
Every time someone's name comes to the fore, we get a comment or three that would call into question anyone from within the Department ever getting near the top job.
It seems like to get that gold star, you have to have committed some heinous sin that someone in power is willing to overlook or cover up for until that big day arrives and then ::BAM!:: they pull it out, show that they own you, and then let you do their bidding from the shadows.
It's like they've sold their soul.

I have been on the job a long time and cannot say that I never done something I wish I hadn't and glad to have done most of what I have.

Why doesn't the skewed media analyze the credentials of the universally-respected Captain John Farrell of the 2nd District? He's got all the right stuff. While he would no doubt refuse, BEG him to save the CPD!
Officers have a right to expect the bosses to be competent, fair-minded, nonjudgmental, and non-hypocritical. They don't have the right to expect them to be perfect.
By definition, any and all exempts have sold their souls to the devil for their $100K plus salary and their "golden parachute" pension.
Cull the herd. Even the NFL have all rookies take the 12 minute, 50-item Wechsler I.Q. test to identify morons.
And don't start screaming about "adverse racial impact". Aside from even more important criteria, can't we at least screen out the money-grubbing, clout baby morons. Promote the very best officers, regardless of etnicity and gender.
Here's the deal with the rank of lieutenant & above that leads to these so called skeletons. . . You have to remember that when one reaches the rank of lieutenant, they are pretty much known by name to anyone who has worked for them, if only for a day. While a sergeant has a certain amount of anonymity, lieutenants and above do not.
The problem is that no lieutenant or captain is going to please everyone all the time. There are problem officers that must be dealt with appropriately. When such an employee is addressed in what they perceive as a negative manner, they forever have a grudge against that supervisor and will go out of their way to badmouth him or her.
As someone who ranks higher than a sergeant, I honestly believe there is not one single person ranked lieutanant or higher who could be in the running for Superintendent or any other exempt position and not be attacked personally. It simply comes with the job.
My point is that one really needs to look at these so called skeletons and separate the fact from the fiction. Many of them are nothing more than fabrications from jaded officers.
I can honestly say that I've never met a watch commander who has tried to do anything other than help the individual officer. Our first and foremost concern is the officer's well being. Does this mean there aren't bad bosses out there? No. One need not look past the 2nd watch in 005 or 017 to see that.
Not all bosses are bad, but all bosses have officers out there who don't like them for one reason or another. Keep that in mind when you read negative posts about them.
Keep the politics and political correctness out of it and hire someone who can do the job.
It's not that the Coppers in 003 like Franklin, he's doing Ok so far. He sure is nit-picky for inspections! Don't forget your whistle or gloves, or else!!

Promtions will always have a basis in clout! But now it is even more widespread and blatant! Exempt ranks are nothing more than a crew who "give back" no silly not to the community to their sponsors! In the form of buying tickets,special favors,envelopes etc... Our command staff is a shambles, and without any real leadership this boat has capsized numerous times and will continue to do so! 1st and 16th that is all I wait for and do the basic police work! Good Evening citizens of SCC!!
Allow me, first, to first apologize for being off topic. I do appreciate the comforts of everyday routine, security of the familiar, the tranquility of repetition…I enjoy them as mush as any bloke.
I thought that I could take this little moment of you day for a little chat.
There are, of course, those who do not want us to speak. In fact, I’m sure that even now, there are clouted culprits and heavy big-wigs whispering orders into phones and other communications outlets as we speak to be sure that everything continues to go their way.
Why??? I say this because while communication outlets are used, in lieu of conversation, words will always retain their power. Words over the means to meaning and for those who listen without a deaf ear comes the annunciation of the truth and the truth is, as we all know, there IS something terribly wrong with this city isn’t there?? Cruelty, injustice, intolerance, depression, suppression…..and while you once had the freedom to object, to think and speak as you saw fit, you now have and are currently receiving state-of-the-art sensors, expensive systems of surveillance and politically correct/incorrect clout and politicians coercing your conformity and the inept F.O.P. #7 suggesting your submissions.
How did this happen? Who’s to blame? Well, certainly, there those more responsible than others, and they should be held accountable, but won’t due to lack of cohesion, but again, truth be told, if you’re looking for the guilty…you need only look into a mirror.
I know why you did it…you are afraid and who wouldn’t be? Paycheck…pension…bills…there’s a myriad of things that conspire to corrupt you of you reason and rob you of your common sense. Fear has gotten the best of you and in your panic you are now stuck with King Daley, F.O.P. #7, and the alder-creature minions. They promised you order, peace-of-mind and better quality of living and all they demand in return (which they have been getting) is your silent, obedient consent.
If you seek to end that silence…you’re going to have to do a better job with organization. You’re also going to have to remind them the fairness, justice, and freedom and more than just words…..but perspectives. Is it fair that your voice should go unheard and that your inability to act keep your dreams as just that…a dream.
If you’ve seen nothing and the crimes of this government are unknown to you, then I suggest you’re read this posting for nothing. But for those who see, hear and seek the same aspirations in working for the city, then I suggest that you band together as never before and create a force to be reckoned with that will never, ever be forgotten!!!
Get some former military officer or general. Isnt there a colonel thats on the job?
Almost all of us no matter what our rank have a skeleton or two in our closet. And for all you know Farrell may have one also. This is not a rap on John, I personally like him. The only one who didn't was that Jewish fellow that the first blogger spoke of. By the way SCC, as one who usually agrees with you 99 44/100ths of the time, what is the reason for this post?

A quick comment about John Farrell... I worked for Farrell in A/4. During that time, a certain detective was devastated with a family tragedy. During and after the incident John Farrell acted like no one I ever had seen before. What a gentleman. I know that detective has never forgotten what he did for him, nor has anyone who was there at that time.

Daley refuses to choose any outsiders for top cop. He's got it narrowed down to Farrell, Northside or any Spanish-speaking, African-American lesbian who will take the job.

Opinions are like assholes.....everyone has one. We can like or dislike someone for a myriad of reasons. Usually our reasons involve personal issues. Unfortunately these issues are never discussed and folks leave comments like, "he's a jagoff", or "you better rethink your opinion", but they never expound any further than that.
I currently work in 003 and have gotten to know John Franklin since he has arrived there a little over a year ago. He initially came on a little strong, but most new commanders will flex their muscle a little. Since he has been there he done nothing but muster the respect and admiration of the troops. He has been fair, and he has worked with the troops on the street.
His management style has progressed and he has not disturbed the applecart. If someone has a personal grudge with him....so be it, but as a person and as a boss he has been more than fair.
I know that there are plenty of military officers in our ranks as POs. Many have been to combat. I think that at least one of them should have the leadership and ability to talk to the press. I know that all of these military officers have security clearances and can be affective in providing leadership to our force. Kelly that runs NYPD is a USMC Resv Col. Why can that be done here in Chicago. Hey Press take a look at our vets. There is a board up at 35th Street. Any one of those guys to lead this department.
I bet the brass here at the CPD is afraid of these "real" leaders. Thats what happens when you have wana be soldiers and marines in charge! LoL These guys have run units in combat that have more personnel than most districts!

I think that part of the problem is that many of the comments and opinion on people are rumors, built upon rumors, built upon rumors, that can be based on false accusations. I had a rumor about myself that built up steam while i was on furlo a few years ago that i was at call back getting ready to be charged for a crime. when I came back from furlo everyone was suprised to see me, it turned out that someone overheard a conversation about something that happened to someone 15 years prior and they happened to have the same last name...people still think i'm IAD so I've started asking really off the wall questions and if they really seem standoffish I ask them to pull over, and I get outta the car to "MAKE A PHONE CALL" (to my wife).I LOVE PARANOIA.

is this the same john franklin who would call in ghost foot chase's with man with a gun. when he made sgt he came over to 014th and we were told that once a fellow officer, when they were in 018th was sitting over by cabrini off of division and larrabee and john called in an on view man with a gun as he was chasing him but he said it was right were this other officer was at and he kept looking around and came on the air asking the dispatcher were was he at and john finally came over the air and said he lost him...the copper said john made the whole story up to sound good and i believe he did this more than once..at least thats how the story was told to us.

When my wife's mother died, Franklin came to the funeral. Sent a card. He had been the commander for about a week, and didn't know me at all. shows up at just about every shooting we've had in 003.

how many of you know bosses like that. Yes, he does come to all the roll calls weekly, and he does expect you to look like you give a damn about your job. Last time I checked, none of those were known to be bad qualities. This job is full of spoiled babies.

I worked for Farrell in Area 4. He was a great boss. It is sad that he did not get an Area. He is one of the most knowledgeable Lts on the job. It was challenging to work in A4 Homicide especially being a woman. He gave me a chance and taught me some things that really assisted my career. Sgt. Mahoney and I forget the other guy's name, I think it was Holy. Anyway, that was the first time I felt like an adult on this job. I really appreciate your patience and dedication to the troops. More bosses should mirror their management style.

I worked on Franklin's tact team back in 004. He was an outstanding officer, backed you up if called for assist. Very good on the street, but he didn't waste time with dogs. Haven't seen him in a while, but he did good work when he worked here.
My vote is for the angry jewish guy for supt. he'd be exciting.
